Palindrome and Ambigram!

Thanks for viewing! No need to comment!

Happy Palindrome Day Around the Globe!

Also an Ambigram! WoW!!

yet another yeah yeah ambigram

For today's shot I rode to Munich's Siegestor, an arch of triumph commemorating Bavaria's participation in the defeat of Napoleon. On either side of the Siegestor is a steel sculpture, reading LOVE from one side and HATE from the other. You can just make out the opposite side of the sculpture reading Hate on the other side of the Siegestor.

"Love Hate Ambigram-Sculpture" by Mia Florentine Weiss, Steel 2018

In the forecourt of the Agios Philippos church in Latsia, Cyprus, you would find this fountain. Fountains like this offering water, and more specifically the water of life protected by the Mother of God, are a Byzantine tradition going back to the fourth century. There is nothing unusual about this, nor is the palindrome (a text or word that can be read from left to right and also from right to left, like 'Otto') and the ambigram (a word or text where one half is mirroring the other, like 'Otto'). The caption "Wash my sins, not just my face" is traditional. Less traditional is the inscription below: Thomas Lefteris, son of Christos, went missing in Kerinia on the 22nd of July, 1974. This is the date of the violent Turkish invasion of the northern half of the island. In this area of Latsia, an outskirt of Nicosia, a lot of refugees from the north found a new home. The island is not at peace. There is only a ceasefire. Leica M8, Voigtlaender NC 1.4/35.

Bingen am Rhein / Germany

HATE is the original view, LOVE is my mirrored view, due to the much nicer Rhine background.

The LOVE HATE sculpture is an ambigram that can be read in mirror image. From one side you read LOVE, if you look at the work in the mirror you read HATE. The sculpture by the German conceptual and performance artist Mia Florentine Weiss, which has been shown in over twenty cities, is a symbol of a change of perspective and is now one of the most photographed works of art in public space.

22 February 2022 is written as 22/02/2022 numerically and is, therefore, a palindrome as it can be read the same way forward and backwards. It is an ambigram as well because it is the same upside down!

An ambigram is a word or a group of words which can be read in at least two different ways. The most usual are symmetric under a rotation of 180 degrees like this of my nickname.

Die LOVE HATE Skulptur ist ein Ambigram, welches sich spiegelbildlich lesen lässt. Von der einen Seite liest man LOVE, betrachtet man das Werk im Spiegel, liest man HATE. The LOVE HATE sculpture is an ambigram that can be read as a mirror image. From one side you read LOVE, if you look at the work in the mirror, you read HATE.

This is a postcard addressed on the verso to "Mrs. D. P. Conklin, Highland Mills, N.J.," but otherwise there's no handwritten message, stamp, or postmark.

A lemon with a Christmas greeting might seem like a work of Dadaist art to us today, but this postcard actually had a specific meaning in the early twentieth century when it was created.

To "hand someone a lemon" meant—often with humorous or joking intentions—"scram," "beat it," or—in the terms of the fad it was associated with—"skidoo" or "23 skidoo."

In another postcard example, this connection between lemons and skidoo forms the basis of a message on a Valentine's Day card (see below): "To My Valentine / 'Tis a lemon that I hand you / And bid you now 'skidoo,' / Because I love another— / There is no chance for you!"

In a third instance, a postcard (below) depicts a hand reaching out to offer the viewer three lemons. You had to know, of course, that being handed a lemon signified "skidoo" in order to realize that the caption, "With my compliments," was meant sarcastically.

So how did lemons become associated with skidoo? A fourth postcard (below) may provide the answer. The postcard is printed in bright yellow and green colors, and lemons appear in the middle of the card and in each of its four corners. The puzzling message on the card begins,"Skidoo 23 is NOW 37," and then continues, "Turn around the card and I hand you a—."

Rotating the postcard so that the text is upside down reveals that the letters and numbers of "NOW 37" turn into the word "LEMON" (this trick is known as an ambigram, in case you were wondering). So, to put it all together, this postcard illustrated that being asked to skidoo—or more colloquially, telling someone "23 skidoo"—was the equivalent of being handed a lemon!

And, of course, the reverse was true—if you received a lemon, you'd better skidoo!

A postcard addressed on the other side to "Iva Appleyard, Guilford, Me.," and postmarked, "Guilford, Me., Aug. 5, 1907."

"Skidoo 23 is NOW 37. Turn around the card and I hand you a--."

"I hand you a"—what?

Based on a fad that became popular around 1906 or 1907, "skidoo 23"—or more commonly "23 skidoo"—was a shorthand way of telling someone to "scram," "beat it," or "get lost," usually with a humorous or joking connotation.

If you "turn around the card" or rotate it so that the text is upside down (see below), you'll discover that the letters and numbers of "NOW 37" have turned into the word "LEMON" (this trick is known as an ambigram).

The sender of the card is telling its recipient that "skidoo 23" is "NOW 37." But "NOW 37" turns out to be a "LEMON" when the card is rotated. So the real message is, "I hand you a—LEMON" = "NOW 37" = "Skidoo 23."

In an amusingly convoluted way, then, this postcard illustrated that being handed a lemon was the equivalent of telling someone "23 skidoo."

Perhaps it was due to postcards like this one that "handing someone a lemon" became a way to say scram or get lost without an explicit reference to 23 skidoo. For an example of this, see With My Compliments.

In any case, if a lemon is handed to you, you now know what to do!

We're here visiting I love words

Byzantiumbooks challenged us to use short sentences containing only two words.

This is my first attempt on an ambigram. It has some flaws, so do not use it as a stencil to tattoo this anywhere on your body.

But stil sound advice in these pandemic times. Stay safe.

Ambigrams are exercises in graphic design that play with optical illusions, symmetry and visual perception. This ambigram is rotational. You will have to turn the image 180 degrees too see the effect.

I'll try a symbiotic ambigram later.

I want to say thank you to Danboard Gideon Fernandez (my brother-in-laws friend) for clicking the shutter, good job! His real name is Dan, I just call him Danboard.. Shot this our driveway..

So, going tomorrow to make an appointment to for my tattoo! I think I’ll just let the artist draw a design to extend my first tattoo, the artist’s name is “Tatay Nero Nievo”. He did my 2nd tattoo which is “Freedom” in ambigram. FREEDOM in Filipino (Tagalog) means LAYA, which is my name.. and yes! I’m still Hella Scared of needles!!! even if this is the 4th time(2 tattoo’s 1 tongue ring) I’m going to have a needle poking at my skin. So I need to do this ASAP, before I back out..

Question for the Day: For sure I’m going to create a 365 book in blurb after I finish, but I’m also thinking of creating like a Strobist info kind of book, and the tips and tricks on how I do my shots. The question is, Do you think I should just make 1 book with the 365 days pictures, then have my strobist info, setups, stories behind the shots, and tricks on how I do my thing, OR should I make a separate book for the strobist info stuff?

With that said..

Can be read forwards, backwards, upside down and in it's mirror image. Just forget about the dots and dashes.

Hey everybody, long time no post. Things have been super hectic over the past few weeks what with the tattoo season being in full swing and a hundred other side projects that are keeping me busy as hell. Hint: Wal-Mart, Target, Hallmark, here I come!

Toryn Green, lead singer of the band Fuel, called me up about a month and a half ago because he had an opportunity to be on the TV show LA Ink. He wanted to get my Angel/Devil Ambigram tattooed on him as a nod to their new album that was just released on August 7th called "Angels and Devils." How appropriate, eh?

So he asked for something a little more "rock and roll" than the plain design that I already had up on the website, and this is the final product that I came up with. The design elements on either side are TG's, his initials.

Unfortunately, he was unable to get this design done on the TV show because their tour was unexpectedly extended. But, he did take a film crew to the tattoo shop where he ended up getting it tattooed and put together a three minute clip of him getting his new ink. They set the clip to one of their new songs, "Gone." You can find it on YouTube and on their myspace page.

However, that was all made better on Wednesday when he DID get on the TV show and had a custom Sinner/Saint Ambigram tattooed on his opposite forearm. For more info on that, check out my other post titled Sinner/Saint Ambigram.

Information about custom Ambigrams can be found on my website. Have a dynamite day! - Mark

fue enfermante hacerlo, pero lo logre jaja

you can use it as a wallpaper if you dare, haha =P

Deep breaths. Change is upon us. Hopefully...

:)

This is an ambigram for the word "Change". It reads the same upside down and rightside up.

What would you like to see change?

I would like to see an end to the war on drugs. I would like to see an end to lobbying. I would like to see an end to the wars that we wage in the name of peace. I would like to see an end to political discrimination, and equal rights for all people. I'd like to see a stronger line drawn between church and state. I'd like to see a talking sea otter riding an emu.

Today...2, 22, 22. It is a Palindrome. That means it's the same forwards as it is backwards as well as upside down. There won't be another one like this for another 400 years.

Indifference is somewhere in between.
