Gino the Parrot is a favourite of the Amazon Gallery at the Vancouver Aquarium. You never know where you’ll find him, as he likes to check out all the trees, and socialize when he finds another especially interesting bird. He gets prettier by the year.
Amazon parrots are found in the genus Amazona (family Psittacidae), comprising 25-30 species.
They originate from South or Central America (including Mexico and the Caribbean). As in the case of other parrots, Amazons have four toes on each foot, two pointing forwards and two pointing backward, and their dexterity is truly amazing.
In the wild, they use their strong beaks to chew out cavities in trees for nesting. The female bird lays 2-4 white eggs and incubates them for 26-28 days. The newly hatched offspring are helpless; their eyes are closed and they have no real feathers, only fluff. After 70-100 days, the hatchlings will have developed a full plumage and be ready to search out their own food, chiefly nuts, fruits and leaves
In captivity, a well cared for Amazon parrot can reach an age of 40-60 years.
Probably the most exquisit sunsets I've seen in my life, from a moving riverboat on the amazon river 1 day downstream from Manaus.

Not far outside of Alta Flouresta, Brazil. This view is from a tower about 165' above the jungle floor at the Cristalino Reserve in the Southern Amazon.
Cotococha Amazon Lodge is located on the shores of the Napo River. The Napo River is one of the major tributaries of the great Amazon River.
In the evenings and mornings you can enjoy breathtaking views of sunsets and sunrises, which colour the skies, waters and the Amazon rainforest.
Because the Napo River has a low water level, you can take a refreshing swim or simply relax on the small sandy beach. The shore is also used as a dock for Cotococha's canoe, where several of Ecuador's Amazon tours depart.
