The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, commonly referred to simply as Cooper Union, is a privately funded college in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, located at Cooper Square and Astor Place.

The neo-Gothic homage to John Ryland, the library in his name, was opened in 1900, after ten years construction organised by his Cuban widow.

A wondrous and unique entity; a mixture of Cumbrian sandstone and Barbary stone, it is an inimitable tribute to Manchester’s cultural heritage.

The John Rylands Library is one of the most distinct in its architectural type, and is one of Great Britain’s largest academic libraries. Notably the architecture absorbs influence from church buildings, owing to its original intended purpose of being a theological library.

In addition to books, the library houses rare artefacts, and is a Grade I listed building, beyond worthy of its designation, and its appeal to an abundance of annual visitors.
