A Quickie All-in-one Moleskine Diary/Sketchbook in Leather Cover

The day I decided to use the Moleskine 18 months weekly diary from July I knew I would have problem pulling out what I need from my bag. It has the same size and look as the Moleskine sketch book I'm using. Knowing that I will be using both quite often in this coming half year starting from my trip to Tokyo next week, I did something drastic in 30 minutes.

First I ruined the back of these 2 notebooks by putting 4 snaps on them so that they can stick together yet removable if I want to. Note that the two notebooks are snapped together so that the top of one is aligned with the bottom of the other. There is a good enough space in between because of the height of the snaps, so it works well to put a pen holder there. I just punched and set two eyelets to hold the broad elastic band together, then a metal wire is passed through the two eyelets to make a ring which helps to keep the elastic band in place on the spines, again this is removable if I don't need a pen holder.

Assembling it is easy, just put the pen holder in between the back of these two notebooks, snap the notebooks together and there you go. At this stage leather freak like me couldn't stop but made a cover for this so that the metal ring of the pen holder is concealed and I have the look I want.

Finally, to distinguish which side is which notebook, I stamped on the leather cover "Time" for the diary side and "Note" for the sketchbook side. Whenever I feel like using the other side, I flip the notebook vertically. The original Moleskine elastic bands can be used to enclose the leather cover but I like a clean look so most of the time they are enclosing the pages only.

You are probably wondering why there are some flying pigs on one of the Moleskines, that's a gift sketchbook from Steve Light. What's that pen you asked? Pilot 1979 Murex fountain pen, also a gift from a good friend Kelly.

The souvenir sellers in St. Maarten definitely got paid on this day!

Three cruise ships tied up at the cruise pier in St. Maarten. Not seen in this shot is the Mein Schiff #3 which is to the right of the Britannia.

St. Maarten is one of our favorite cruise ports so we were able to avoid the crowds for the most part and do the shopping there we like to do.

We take the water taxi down to the main beach area then walk a short distance over to the Fairway Mark It:

www.facebook.com/fairwaymarkitsxm/

where Niccy stocks up on the Dutch candies and cakes she can't get here in the US. We then go back to the beach area and stop for an adult beverage at the Holland House Beach Hotel:

www.hhbh.com/

After a cool beverage we water taxi back to the cruise pier and head out into the street for a short walk down to the St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation shop and make a donation:

www.facebook.com/p/StMaarten-Animal-Welfare-Foundation-10...

After that we stop at the Amsterdam Cheese and Liquor Store:

acs-sxm.com/

to pick up a few more "necessities" for Niccy. We found out that their shop is moving so we'll have to make a small alteration to our trip next time but it's an easy one.

After all this we meander back to the cruise pier, onto the ship, and out to the Lido for a little lunch out on the back deck. A perfect trip in a lovely place!

Although we don't like to admit it, guys compare sizes!

It doesn't matter what it is and we all know it. Car engines, model trains, garden hoses, it doesn't matter and we all know it. Guys compare sizes and bigger is always better.

In this case it's one of the valves from the ships engine that these fellows were sizing up. Just looking at this I can imagine the thoughts these fellows are having....

#1. "Yeah that's just like my valve, nice and straight".

#2. "I remember when my valve was that big".

#3. "My valve is only this big but it still works great"!

#4. "Hope my valve still works when I get to your age".

A contest that has gone on since the beginning and has no sign of ever stopping.

I actually got to have a nice conversation with one of the engineers about the ship's propulsion and my Navy experiences. I tried to wrangle a trip down to the engineroom control but unfortunately got denied. Security reasons don't you know...

The different departments on the ship put items on display in the atrium, highlighting the best features of their department. There were displays from engineering, medical, catering, housekeeping, etc. Gives the passengers an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes and shows exactly what it takes to keep the ship running shipshape.

For those in the Show Your EXIF group you should note that the actual lens used is a Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC All-in-One Zoom for Canon APS-C Digital SLR. It's a well known issue and for some crazy reason it always shows up as a Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8, a lens I've never owned or used!

Watering Hole:

(Noun)

A social gathering place, such as a bar or saloon, where drinks are served.

It seems that the water faucet @ Tuthill had a bit of permanent leak which was well known by the locals. We had birds, bees, and a squirrel that stopped by to quench their parched throats.

I'm not photographing bees and the squirrel must've been a tweaker (as squirrels seem to be), so this is the best I got. My usual shooting style, see something and fire away!

BTW, I have NO idea what kind of bird this is, my guess is a Black Bird???

I guess the Captain doesn't understand the rules of the game?

The Britannia docked in Curacao at the Riffort Village, right at the Rif Fort. This is the cruise ship dock which has changed a lot since the first time we visited.

Curacao is a favorite for us and a great place for Niccy to buy her fabric. A weird thing for tourists to be buying but we're not your average tourists. There's also a great place to eat here, down in the New Market:

Google Maps coordinates

Were we to decide to leave the US and move abroad Curacao would certainly be on the "Places We Could Hang Out" list, right along with St. Maarten and the Cayman Islands. Problem for us is that we've still got of the US to see and not enough time to see it all!

Just because you're on a holiday doesn't mean you can't learn something along the way!

If we take a tour when we're on a cruise Niccy tries her best to book something with a cultural aspect to it. This isn't always possible but it worked out well in Bonaire.

After seeing the flamingos our tour took us to the Mangazina di Rei Learning Center:

www.mangazinadirei.org/index.php?lc=en

where we had an opportunity to learn a bit about the history and culture of Bonaire.

What we liked about this tour is that it was a "hands on" tour, meaning that we were able to be active participants in the activities they had to offer instead of just standing idly by and watching. We learned a bit about how their traditional music came about, a bit about their agricultural practices, and the different food offerings the island has.

If you look at their website:

www.mangazinadirei.org/index.php?lc=en

you'll see that they have a lot of programs for children, trying to help save the old ways and instill a bit of knowledge and pride in their culture. We appreciate this and it would be nice to see more places like this, preserving a piece of yesterday for the generations of tomorrow.

so... what does everyone think?

the device itself is purely amazing, something many have dreamed of for years. but, i must admit, i am very disappointed in the choice of a single carrier, cingular, that must be used with the phone. i understand the technical reasons behind this, but still... i don't want to switch my carrier and be forced into cingular's shitty plans to use this wonderful device :\ priced @ 499 for 4 gig and 599 for 8gig.

most people's opinions so far at work can be summed up by the following IM quote:

it's the lead in to this one!

Everybody has returned onboard and ready to relax a bit. Out comes the entertainment crew, trying to get them into a party mood. Sorry folks, it's not going to work until there's been a large amount of alcohol imbibed to lubricate the machinery and get the party started!

Niccy and I just got back from a 2 week cruise down in the Caribbean, a trip that was supposed to be in the UK but thanks to the whole covid fiasco that was not meant to be. We were on the P&O Britannia and as we quickly found out we were the only Americans aboard! We had a good time, got to see some new ports and enjoyed the weather.

I did this shot in B/W since to me it reflected the mood of the crowd. They weren't liquored up enough to be in a party mood but with a little time and patience......

Folks on this trip did like dressing up for dinner!

Once again, the ship's photographers giving me the chance to get a shot that I like!

This was the first formal night onboard the Britannia and people were dressed to the nines.

Sailing with Holland America we're used to some folks dressing for formal nights, in fact we've done it ourselves but this was completely different. I would say the majority of the guests were wearing fancy dress and making Niccy and I look like the schlubs by the side of the road.

I'll agree that it's nice to dress for dinner every now and then but not so much when we're on a cruise. This is our time to get away from formalities and convention, time to hang out and just enjoy life without any expectations. I've got Niccy to finally understand that we don't know any of these people and we'll never see them again so there's no one to impress here. It goes against her being a professional and always trying to present a professional image though. You can call me a bad influence, I call my self a realist!

At Ciudad Rodrigo we passed the border and went for Coimbra. When the fires became to near and threatening we fled to the North of Portugal and went to Lamego, Chaves and Bragança.

Almost every kind of non-food article is here for sale, except for clothes and shoes.

It's a typical Portuguese shop which you can find in almost every town and village, although this kind of shop is disappearing gradually.

A series of shots I got during our passage through The Big Ditch!

There were open decks (8-9) in the forward of the ship that were jam packed with folks watching all the action in the locks. Funny thing is the cargo ship sailors seemed to be as interested in us as we were in them!

Going through the complete Panama Canal was definitely a bucket list item for me. I spent the entire day (8 hours) outside on the deck along with a bunch of other folks, my shutter happily clicking away!

We had a Canal Guide onboard who pointed out all the interesting locations, couldn't tell you one thing he said because I wasn't listening I was too busy shooting!

Have to commend Princess Cruises, they were really nice to us outside in that they had stewards coming aro

As I type this I'm in negotiations with Niccy about purchasing this place but she's being stubborn and saying NO! I don't understand why.

I've got a great argument for buying with some salient points but she refuses to believe that it would be advantageous for me to sit on the balcony in my underwear with a 600mm (or more) lens, drinking margaritas and shooting ship shots all day.

Yes, I've pointed out that Walmart and Sam's Club are just a quick boat ride across the bay and there's a really nice pool so there's no need to get in the ocean (where fish pee) when you want to swim.

I told her there's a private elevator so no need to share air with the commoners and it's gated so no worries about burglars getting in and stealing my 600mm (or more) lens. Yet she still says NO! I don't understand why.

Niccy and I just got back from a transatlantic cruise so I've finally got some shots to post!

Why the heck couldn't we win at Trivia???

This was our trivia team on the cruise. We thought we had the bases pretty well covered when it came to questions that you will only hear if you attend a pub quiz or a trivia session but Nay Nay. It seems like we came up on the short end of the stick every time, always by one or two questions.

One of the great things about cruising is the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and experiences, make a connection with them and have a great time while doing so. All the folks in this shot (Carol, Barb, Niccy, Mike, Marie, and myself are the best of the best and we (NIccy and I) are looking forward to seeing them all in the future!

We were booked for 3 days but only stayed for one. Why you ask????

We left Payson and headed to our final (we thought) destination, the Fort Tuthill Luke AFB Recreation Area.

It's a campground that is ran by the Air Force, open to active duty personnel, retired personnel, and disabled veterans (30% or more). Really nice place up in the woods, quiet and secure. At least we thought so when we booked.

Come to find out there was a 3 day Electronic Music Festival at the Pepsi Amphitheater (next to the campground) the same weekend we decide to stay. Had it been an evening concert we probably would have stayed but 3 days of EDM combined with the "people" that were attending the festival was a bit too much.

If you're a seasoned citizen like myself you'll probably understand the following, if you're not just ask your favorite "boomer" what I'm talking about. Imagine spending 3 days amongst a modern version of the "Deadheads"....Not at all what we planned on so we wound up pulling out after the first night.

We'll be back there next year but you can rest assured that we'll be checking the amphitheater schedule before we book again.
