Two photographs made at Oberammergau railway station on Monday 17th September 1984.

Left: Class 141 electric locomotive No. 141 391-3 has arrived with a service from Murnau. The red tail lights indicate that the train is ready to return to Murnau (at 16:12), presumably with the locomotive propelling although I did not note whether the consist included a driving trailer at the far end.

Right: I had swung around almost 180 degrees to get this shot of the attractive station building. The facilities here have apparently been much reduced since my visit, with only a single track now serving the station.

As many of you probably know, Oberammergau is famous for its staging of a play depicting Jesus' passion (suffering). The play is presented once a decade in years that end with a zero. There was a special additional presentation in 1984, to mark its 350th anniversary, but we did not see it, our visit to the town being very brief. The 2020 presentation was postponed until 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Class 67 locomotive No. 67015 waits to leave Cardiff Central station on Saturday 12th October 2024 with 1W63, the 17:50 service to Manchester Piccadilly. Meanwhile Class 150 diesel multiple unit No. 150254 arrives with 2F44, the 15:42 service from Treherbert.

I travelled on 1W63 as far as Hereford. After I'd watched the train disappear off on its way I realised I'd failed to record the DVT's* number for my haulage records. I then spotted another enthusiast that I'd seen board the train at Newport, and had also alighted here at Hereford. I had a quick friendly chat with this person, asked about the DVT and got the information I wanted. Nothing remarkable about that, you might be thinking, except that this enthusiast was a teenage girl.

* DVT in this case stands for Driving Van Trailer, rather than Deep Vein Thrombosis. A DVT is a non-powered vehicle which, when at the front of a train, can be used to control a propelling locomotive at the rear of the train.

Walking back to the boat after 2 hours waiting for a Kingfisher to fly passed/land nearby/get spotted, I was fortunate to realise, from some distance away, the little tease had landed on the front headlight ! I managed to fire a few shots before it was disturbed by another boat.

“I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

A new poem:

December Reminiscences

By Don Iannone

Sometimes I wish I could go back

To my younger years

When magic walked the Earth

And all destiny rested in my dreams

Dreams that went beyond what was

To new untouched places

By me, you, anyone

Places deep inside our then tender hearts

Things weren't particularly easy

Plenty of struggles with reality

But you felt what love was

Never more than a hug away

Things meant something back then

For their own sake, it seemed

Not because they helped you do anything

Or be anybody

Back then, dreams could overtake you

Grab you up in their big arms

Hug you like a bear

Shake you to life

We laughed and cried

Because they were the right things to do

Joy, as simple as a shiny red apple

Pain, just tiny scratches on a mountain

If you wished hard enough

Any day could be Christmas

Daily experiences outnumbered memories

So many lingering sweet first kisses

Days and nights were playmates

Not irreconcilable opposites or indecipherable dialectics

You said your prayers each night

You woke up happy in the morning

I go back once in a while

More and more as I grow older

And as life and death become equal partners

And goals give way to just being

i said

wrap me

in a blanket of living breathing rose blossoms

no thorns

already wore that coat too long

am old

need a lighter cloak now

so just the blossoms please

glowing with their fragrance everywhere everywhere

you gave it to me

or maybe you didn't

but then

pressing bare feet into earth

i looked up

and let the heavy weight of countless dazzling stars

crush me with their beauty

i awoke

on my knees

ecstatic

for blossoms

thorns

and

All

The parent swallow has been passing food to its young. They wait paitiently on the wire, but the parent never alights, instead just hovering for the briefest instant while the fledgling snatches its titbit. Then for the parent bird, it's quickly off to find more food.

We went for a walk this afternoon and I took the camera and thought that I got some usuable photos. It wasnt until I got home and downloaded them that I discovered that there was a huge smear on the lens so I couldnt use any.I went back out into the garden and this is my shot for the day

Sunset on Rodeo Beach, located in the Fort Cronkhite area of the Marin Headlands, one of the most special places in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area with access to multiple trails, fantastic views, a dog-friendly beach, fascinating geology, and an interesting history. As a pocket beach, Rodeo Beach sands do not migrate up or down the coast. Instead, they are carried a short distance offshore in winter, tumble about in the surf, and then return to replenish the beach in the spring and summer. Thus, the sands of Rodeo Beach are native to the Marin Headlands and reflect the Franciscan geology of the closest hills and cliffs. This earthcache focuses on the abundant radiolarian chert and rare carnelian pebbles.

When flashfix texted that the dumpster at Manor Park Elementary was on fire, I rushed outside with my camera. This photo of one of the fire fighters lit by the glow of the fire engine is the result. I really like it, so thanks, Stephanie!

An egret flies close to the kelp covered surface of Whaler's Cove at Point Lobos State Reserve, California.

As I arrived at Whaler's Cove I was hoping to perhaps be able to photograph sea otters up close. Although this was a high surf day along the coast, Whalers Cove is sheltered and I had heard that it is a good place to look for wildlife. After parking my car I did not see any otters, but I immediately saw this egret hunting in the kelp right next to the road. I grabbed the long lens and found a comfortable spot close by and began observing and photographing. The bird was apparently hunting for small fish in the kelp bed. It stood on top of the kelp and would occasionally make a lunge into the water, on one occasion coming up with a fish in its bill.

One of the things I like most about this photograph is the shadow of the bird's curving neck cast on the translucent feathers of its wing.
