View Large On Black - Well... It certainly looked like an alien the first time I saw one last week! It's called an "Ambush Bug" and it's not even a half inch long.
From a couple sources on the web...
These stealthy critters sit very still on or near flowers, their superb camouflage allowing them to remain undetected while an unwitting butterfly or other unfortunate happens by to gather nectar. They then seize their prey using front legs adapted for the task - these legs resemble the front legs of the praying mantis. It is a ferocious bug indeed that takes prey 10 times its own size.
The mouth of this bug as with the assassin bug (a close cousin) is shaped like a spike that is plunged into the body of the prey it catches. The "proboscis" is used to jab the victim. The saliva then dissolves the insides of the insect it has caught. Once it is turned to liquid, this is sucked from the insect much like we might use a straw. The bug's saliva is able to paralyze the food prey so the ambush bug can feed without having to hold tightly to its dinner.
Canon 5D MkII, Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, ISO 1600, 1/250 @ f/9, Natural light, Hand held
You can see the left leg of the Ambush Bug holding the head of its victim while it inserts it's proboscis to extract the dissolved, insect milk shake! Yummmmm....
The night before this image was taken we took this little beauty inside and photographed it with my bud's MP-E 65 and strobes, with the camera on a tripod. After our little "Studio Session" we put the bug and the flower she was sitting on back in the same spot. I checked on her several times over the next 24 hours and she hadn't moved 4 inches. On one of those occasions she had caught, and was feeding on this fly.
Very cool to find these tiny little dramas playing out under our feet!
1991 Halcyon Alien plastic kit from England. It was meant to be just a quick weekend project no serious approach, did not even use putty or proper sanding work done. Assembled in 1991 and been in storage until 2008 and then rediscovered by accident then bit of sanding and painting to finally finish it. Actual time for build and painting took just about 4 hrs but within the space of 16 years. Lazy bum!!

yeah, something is trully odd about it. But I'll just let it like this. I'm afraid I can't find the strenght to photoshop it.
This alien was cast out of latex and soft polyurethane foam, then airbrushed with acrylic paint & inks
During Glasgow's Merchant City Festival last weekend innocent shoppers were targeted by a menacing group of aliens. This poor shopper, while showing an initial willingness to play along and despite feigned concern by the invading hoard was left literally Gob Smacked (a widely used Glaswegian term, though usually in a different context).
In all seriousness, she was a terrific sport and really threw herself into the role! As for the Aliens they were out of this world. Search Flickr for "alien merchant city glasgow" for more superb pictures from the event or even go to their home planet at www.ljud.si/slo/ !
