En el mismo se establecen los principios básicos sobre los cuales se construye la matemática en la actualidad, empezando por los principios lógicos que rigen las acciones educativas de la mente humana. Los conjuntos se estudian desde una perspectiva axiomática simple, pero sin omitir las dificultades intrínsecas de este tema. La estructura de los números reales es construida y estudiada en forma rigurosa y completa. Finalmente, se establece la correspondencia biounívoca entre los números reales y los “puntos” de una recta según la axiomática geométrica de Hilbert.

George Salmon (25 September 1819 – 22 January 1904) was, firstly, a mathematician whose publications in algebraic geometry were widely read in the second half of the 19th century. He was also an Anglican theologian who devoted himself mostly to theology for the last forty years of his life. His publications in theology were widely read, too.

 

He spent his entire career at Trinity College Dublin.

 

Salmon was Provost of Trinity College in Dublin from 1888 until his death in 1904. The highlight of his career may have been when in 1892 he presided over the great celebrations marking the tercentenary of the College, which had been founded by Queen Elizabeth I.

His deep conservatism led him to strongly oppose women receiving degrees from the University. He eventually agreed to dropping his veto in 1901 when the Board voted in favour of allowing women to enter the university. This was one of his last acts as Provost.

Symbolically in January 1904, just after he died, the first women undergraduates were admitted.

  

Trinity College, Dublin (TCD; Irish: Coláiste na Tríonóide, Baile Átha Cliath), formally known as the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin, was founded in 1592 by letters patent from Queen Elizabeth I as the "mother of a university", and is the only constituent college of the University of Dublin.
