But that was when a smart eyes girl asked me: “Yes, all that is more or less clear, but what is really behind a good “wildlife picture”?, “what is need to be done”? “, “it must be something more, because I “go to the field” with my homework done, my camera prepared, and full of optimism; after many hours taking pictures, I come home with 1,200 pictures!!! and,………..nothing. “Some of her classmates argued: “a very expensive equipment”, “a very big camera”, “lots of lens”. “No”, she replied unsatisfied, “definitely not, it must be something else, there is much more; the photographer was there, in the right place at the right time, and” pulled the shutter button”. “Yes, of course, it is also the story of the protagonist of the picture, but…..there is………………. one more story”.

……………………aspira cualquier fotógrafo que se precie.
Pero fue entonces cuando una alumna de ojos avispados me preguntó: “Si, todo eso está más o menos claro, pero, ¿Qué hay realmente detrás de una buena ‘foto de naturaleza’?, ¿Qué es lo que hay que hacer?, Debe haber algo más, pues yo ‘salgo al campo’ con los deberes hechos, mi cámara preparada y llena de optimismo y, después de muchas horas, vuelvo a casa con 1.200 fotos!!! y………..en fin”. Algunos de sus compañeros argumentaron: “Un equipo muy caro”, “Una cámara bien grande”, “Muchos objetivos”. “No”, respondió ella insatisfecha; “eso desde luego que no es, tiene que haber algo más, hay más, el fotógrafo estaba allí, en el sitio justo en el momento justo, y “apretó el disparador”. “Sí, claro, también está la historia del protagonista de la fotografía, pero….hay……una historia más”.
Pues estoy totalmente de acuerdo con……………..

Via di San Michele. A filming location from I, Vitelloni by Federico Fellini. The large door with the arch, & the smaller door next to it, were used as the exteriors for Alberto's house.
Its a brief scene where a hungover Alberto, after the canival, is helped by Moraldo to his home where he finds out his sister Olga is leaving for good.
I tried to find this spot last time I was in Rome, but the rainy days ruined my plans. I was able to get here this time, but it was after I had left Rome I had doubts as to whether or not I found the right spot.

………..perseguir durante media hora dando aletas como un loco a un tiburón ballena, a ver si hay suerte y se da la vuelta en las Islas Maldivas (al final, no); la mirada inteligente de un orangután en las selvas de Borneo; la vista nocturna a 4.000 metros de altitud de las montañas más altas del mundo en el Himalaya Nepalí mientras intentas coger aire en tus pulmones para poder dar otro paso en la nieve y continuar el ascenso nocturno y………….. ¡Tantos más!!!
Pienso que son esas emociones, sentimientos y sensaciones increíbles, que hemos tenido la oportunidad de sentir en directo, las que cada “fotógrafo de naturaleza” intenta transmitir con sus fotos. Si, hacemos fotos porque nos gusta, nos encanta, pero también creo que hacemos fotos porque lo que pretendemos, (y esto es lo más importante) es transmitir esa belleza a la gente que, o no tiene la oportunidad de vivirlo en directo o no quiere. Y no solo porque está ahí y es tremendamente bello, sino porque se ignora con demasiada frecuencia su vital importancia para nuestro bienestar y el de futuras generaciones. Y lamentablemente, somos nosotros mismos, el ser humano, el que está destruyendo tanta riqueza y belleza. El dinero, la avaricia y la codicia de demasiados, sumado al hambre e incultura de muchos más, tristemente sobrepasa con creces la extraordinaria capacidad de resistencia y regeneración de la naturaleza.

I think these amazing emotions, feelings and senses we have had the opportunity to experience in live, are the ones who every “wildlife photographer” tries to transmit with their pictures. Yes, we take pictures because we like, we love to do it, but also I think that we take pictures because (and this is the most important thing) we want to transmit that beauty to the people who whether doesn’t have the opportunity to experience or they doesn’t want. And not only because it is there and it is tremendously beautiful, but also because it is too often ignored its vital importance for our well-being and for future generations. Unfortunately, we are ourselves, the human beings, who are destroying so much wealth and beauty. The money and greed of too many people added to the hunger and ignorance of many more, sadly exceeds by far the extraordinary resistance and resilience of Nature.
“Wildlife photographers” must actively participate ……………..

………….Porque, ser “fotógrafo de naturaleza” es algo apasionante, algo lleno de experiencias, sentimientos, sensaciones y emociones………realmente increíbles. Además de satisfacciones reconfortantes…….
Y…….buenos momentos……..muy buenos momentos…..: ver amanecer en el Kalahari; la torrencial lluvia de la selva tropical en la Amazonia; verse rodeado de cientos de tiburones a 30 metros de profundidad en las Islas Galápagos; la mirada penetrante de una víbora en la selva tropical de Sri Lanka; la pertinaz defensa de su anémona por el pequeño y valiente pez payaso en el Mar Rojo (a veces duelen los mordiscos e incluso sangras); llegar a los 78º latitud norte en velero en el Ártico, a ver si por fin aparece el oso polar (al final, no); ver venir de frente a un tiburón blanco debajo del agua en Sudáfrica ¡Dios mío, qué dientes!!! ; encontrar por fin, después de horas de búsqueda un pequeño tarsio escondido en el hueco de un viejo árbol en las selvas de Sulawesi; pasar toda la noche sentado en el tronco de un árbol esperando a ver si sale a desovar una tortuga en una playa de la costa del Pacífico en Costa Rica (al final, no); la mirada fija de un leopardo en Botswana, preguntándote si no estará pensando en la cena; observar hipnotizado un volcán activo en los Andes Ecuatorianos; perseguir durante media hora “dando aletas como un loco” a un tiburón ballena, a ver si hay suerte y se da la vuelta en las Islas Maldivas (al final, no); la mirada inteligente de un orangután en las selvas de Borneo; la vista nocturna a 4.000 metros de altitud de las montañas más altas del mundo en el Himalaya Nepalí mientras intentas coger aire en tus pulmones para poder dar otro paso en la nieve y continuar el ascenso nocturno; y …………..tantos más!!!

And ……..good moments, very good moments: to see the sunrise in Kalahari; the torrential rain in the Amazonia rainforest; to see how you are surrounded by hundreds of sharks at 30 meters deep in the Galapagos Islands; the snake penetrating gaze in the rainforest of Sri Lanka; the obstinate defense of his anemone by the little and brave clown fish in the Red Sea (sometimes he bites and even bleed); to get 78º North latitude on a sailing ship in the Arctic, to see if the polar bear finally appears (finally, not); to see coming towards me a great white shark being submerged in South Africa, oh, my God!!! what teeth!!!; after hours of searching, finally find a small tarsier hidden in an old tree hollow in Sulawesi jungles; to spend all night sitting on a tree trunk waiting to see if a turtle appears to spawn, on a beach of the Pacific coast in Costa Rica (finally, not); the leopard gaze in Botswana, wondering if he is not thinking about his dinner; to observe hypnotized an active volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes; to go after a whale shark for half an hour “giving fins like a crazy man”, to see if I´m lucky and it turns, in the Maldives Islands (finally, not); the smart look of an orangutan in the jungles of Borneo; the night view at 4,000 meters of altitude of the highest mountains in the world in the Himalayas Nepali while you try to catch air in your lungs to be able to take another step in the snow and continue the nocturnal ascentand; and …….many more!!!

11.30PM: Uno de los “rescatadores” me debe ver un poco “fastidiado” y se ofrece amable a llevarme la pesada mochila del equipo fotográfico, no tengo más remedio que aceptar el ofrecimiento resignado.
00:15AM: Parece que ya estamos llegando al campamento…..…… ¡Agradecimientos!!!……………. ¡Abrazos!!!..........Sonrisas......Suspiros………Explicaciones……..
00:45AM: Llego al “destartalado barquito”. ¡Por fin! ¡Hogar dulce hogar!!! Ropa seca (me queda poca), algo de comer (por supuesto un poco de arroz junto a otra pastilla para la diarrea).
Tengo que cargar las baterías, hay que arrancar el motor del barco para generar energía. Después de una dura negociación, el “capitán” accede “a regañadientes” haciendo ruidos incomprensibles con la boca y cara de pocos amigos.
Pongo a cargar las primeras baterías; mientras, comienzo a descargar las imágenes en los discos duros portátiles
--¡Que hay mucha humedad y esto tarda! ¡Venga, venga, vamos!!! ¡Se van a fastidiar! -Los envuelvo en bolsas de plástico.
01:30AM: Me pongo a secar y limpiar las cámaras…………………………
………….--It must have been the stress, I will get better tomorrow for sure! -I think with optimism (finally, not).
11:30PM: Someone of the “rescue team” must have seen me a little bit “damaged”…………and he offers friendly to carry my heavy backpack photographic equipment. I have to accept his offer with resignation.
00:15AM: It seems like we are getting the river camp…… Hugs!!!.............Thanks!!!.......... Smiles...... Sighs.......... Explanations…….
00:45AM: I get the "ramshackle little boat". Finally! Home sweet home!!! Dry clothe (few remaining), something to eat (of course, a little bit of rice along with another tablet for diarrhea).
I have to charge my batteries, the boat engine must be started to generate power. After hard negotiations, the captain, “reluctantly”, agrees by making incomprehensible noises with his mouth and a stern look on his face.
I put the first battery to charge while I start downloading the images on portable hard drives. The humidity is very high and it takes a long time!
--Let’s go! Come on, come on!” They are going to be damaged! -I totally cover them with plastic bags.

……………….Me quedo dormido hipnotizado por el increíble espectáculo del intermitente destello de cientos y cientos de luciérnagas que me sobrevuelan incansables………
03:00 AM: ¡Me despierto sobresaltado!!! –¿Pero………qué pasa ahora?…….. ¡Tormenta!………..Diluvia, rayos, truenos, ¡rachas muy fuertes de viento!!! Ooohh!!! ¡No, no,…..no, no, no!!!…….. ¡Pues sí!!! Se ha roto el cabo al que estábamos amarrados. ¡Vamos a la deriva! El “capitán” grita cosas raras. Encallamos. El barco comienza a escorarse de estribor. ¡Las cámaras!!! Corro como puedo, agarro la mochila a duras penas y la ato a un poste del barco lo mejor que puedo. Pienso: ¡como esto se hunda!, adiós equipo, fotos y…………..
Con el motor a toda marcha y empujando con ayuda de unas varas y todas nuestras fuerzas logramos desencallar el barco.
3.30AM: Hemos conseguido volver a amarrar el barco. La tormenta esta amainando. Me vuelvo a tumbar, ¡estoy agotado…!!!
5:30 AM: ¡Vamos!!! ¡Arriba!!! ¡A levantarse!!! ¡Alegría!!! “Vaaaamos”…… ¡Que va a salir el sol y hoy tenemos que conseguir…….buenas fotos!!!
Ya he llegado a casa. Ya estás en el estudio y ahora hay que ponerse…………….

………………….I fall asleep hypnotized by the incredible spectacle of the intermittent flash of hundreds and hundreds of fireflies that fly me over tirelessly……..
03:00 AM: I wake up with a shock!!! -But……….what happens now?.……..Storm! ……..-It pours, thunders, lightings, strong very strong gusts of wind!!! Ooohh!!! No, no ….no, no, no!!!……..Yes!!! The rope to which we were tied is broken. We are adrift!!! The “captain” shouts strange things. The boat runs aground. The boat starts to heel over the starboard. The cameras!!! I run as I can, I hardly grab the backpack and I tie it to a pole boat as best as I can. I think: if this boat sinks! Goodbye equipment, photos and………….
With the engine at full speed and pushing with staves with all our strength we can refloat the ship.
3.30AM: We have been able to re-moor the boat again. The storm gradually dies down. I’m going to lay down again. I’m exhausted!!!
5:30 AM: Come on!!! Get up!!! Be happy!!! come on!!! Let´s go!!! The sun is rising and we have to take……..good pictures today!!!
I have arrived home. Now you are at the photo studio and now you must ………………..

El violín de Ara Malikian, la viola de Humberto Armas, la guitarra de Luis Gallo y el contrabajo de Alberto Román, forman el Ara Malikian Ensemble, que se embarcan en un viaje musical inspirado en la senda de los zíngaros a través de toda Europa, desde la India a España, donde surge el flamenco.
Alberto was born in Bogotá 70 years ago. He learned how to dance salsa in Cali, and later he also studied in Cuba. He dances on the streets of Bogotá 5 to 7 hours every day. Tonight he was dressed with a mexican 'pachuco' outfit. December 2016
Alberto es bogotano, aprendió a bailar salsa en Cali, y años después en Cuba. Tiene 70 años. Todos los días baila entre cinco y siete horas. Me lo encontré hoy en la Ciclovía nocturna de Bogotá, con un traje de "pachuco" mexicano. De la serie "100 rostros de Bogotá" .15 de diciembre de 2016
