3 Nov, 2011. Saad Azhar is currently pursuing Bachelors in Electronic Engineering at Hajvery University (HU). He was awarded a scholarship to Study Abroad for 1 semester at Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey. The scholarship included Return AirTicket, Comprehensive Insurance, and 5000 Euros Stipend Money for daily expenses among other things. The following essay is written by him, which presents a glimpse of his Experience of Studying and Living Abroad in the mesmerising city of Istanbul.
”My name is Muhammad Saad Azhar, I am in 6th semester of Bachelors in Electronics Engineering at Hajvery University (HU), Lahore, Pakistan. I was awarded a life time opportunity in the shape of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship by HU; it was an achievement & an honour for me to be accepted for such competitive scholarship at HU. I chose Sabanci University Istanbul, Turkey – which is amongst the most prestigious Universities in Turkey.
Istanbul is the city that divides the two continents of Asia and Europe, the European side is known for its tourist destinations. Sabanci University is situated on Asian Side of Istanbul. I found the Turkish people to be very friendly, polite and co-operative. Turkey itself is a very beautiful country and Istanbul is the 8 most visited tourist city in the world! It has many beautiful sites and historic monuments.
At Sabanci University (SU), there is a group of local students – Mentors, to help International students settle in. On behalf of SU they arranged a trip for all exchange students to Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace, all of which are UNESCO world heritage sites, and in one word are incredible.
My courses at SU included: Turkish language, Power Electronic and Industrial Control. For the Industrial Control Course, my group got the highest marks for the project: PLC System and Control Project . This Project helped me learn how to work professionally in a different country with different people. I also worked on Robotics and learned how to control robot’s different parts. Since most Turkish people prefer speaking their own language, I decided to learn Turkish language to make the most of my time here, but I also got a chance to learn bit and pieces of German, French, Chinese & Dutch from the International Students.
I used SU shuttles, Trams, Metros, Dolmus, Buses and Ferries for travelling across Istanbul. I visited a lot of places in Istanbul like the Blue Mosque,Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Place,Eyüp, Grand Bazaar, Taksim Square,Istiklal Street, Panorama Museum, Forum Istanbul, Magic Ice, Turk Aqua Zoo and some other places. I attended Turkey Republic Day Ceremony and was surprised and glad to see how they celebrate their Republic Day with the fireworks, that was great experience. I also visited other cities like, Çanakkale, Troy Fort and Pamukkale during the vacations after the final term with my friends. It was a lot of fun over, we met many different people from different countries.
This great experience has enhanced my knowledge and my Confidence; furthermore it has helped me develop my skills in the field of engineering. During my stay over there I met so many people and made so many friends who helped me one way or other. Even today I am in contact with them and I intend to go back to Sabanci University for Masters in Engineering subjects.
I would like to thank HU for providing me such a life time opportunity.”

Kerala Folklore Museum welcomes you with a big kalvilakku (stone lamp). As you pass the kalvilakku, you will be greeted by elephant statues on either side of the steps leading to the massive multi-storey traditional building. The interiors are designed in the Kerala temple architectural style. The entire structure is made of wood and literate stone with antique architectural objects.
Kerala Folklore Museum is for architectural enthusiasts who wish to explore places with a touch of traditional designs. It was started by Annie George and George Thaliyath, who have an antique shop in Mattancherry, Cochin. They started this in early 2009 to promote the traditional art forms of South India.
The building in which the theater and museum is located is constructed in three different architectural styles - Malabar, Colonial and Travancore. Each of these styles depicts the cultural ethos of the three kingdoms of yore - Malabar (north Kerala), Kochi (central Kerala) and Thiruvithankoor or Travancore (south Kerala). The ground floor of the museum is done in the Malabar style and showcases masks, costumes, tribal jewelry, puppets and traditional school paintings from15-20th century.
The first floor has colonial style architecture with arched windows reflecting Kerala architecture in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Here you will come across a performance theater called Kalithattu, where folk art performances like string puppet, Kalaripayattu (martial arts), Thira (ritualistic art form performed during temple festivals), Pavakathakali (glove puppetry) and Kaalakali (tribal art form) are organized. The floor above is made in Travancore architectural style with a mix of murals and paintings on the ceilings and walls. This has been made completely of wood with the four walls as the only support for the massive wooden ceiling.
Apart from the folklore theaters on each floor, Kerala Folklore Museum has various antiques that showcase the history, tradition and cultural differences in different parts of the country, especially South India. There are costumes of dance forms like Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam, Kathakali, Thullal, Koodiyattam and Theyyam, and around 4000 antique artifacts from the life and culture of south Indian society over the past 1000 years.
Kerala Folklore Museum is a must-visit place in Cochin. It is a fascinating museum and rich in terms of architectural display. Special folklore performances can be arranged at the museum for tourists or visitors upon prior booking. For detailed information and activities .
