あらすじ。
アメリカ。ニュージャージー州。
ニューアーク国際空港で起こった墜落事故を担当していたニアが、突然心臓発作で亡くなった。
その場にいた元SPKのステファンは、すぐに日本の捜査官松田に連絡する。
ノースノーフォーク海岸を素足で歩いていたリサは、波打ち際で不思議な場所を見つけて駆け寄った。
湿って黒ずんだ砂浜に、丸い光を放ったように、真っ白に乾いた場所があった。
近づくと、黒いノートが落ちている。
その周囲は、まるきり乾いていた。
気味悪がったリサは、ワイミーズハウスで一緒に育った兄、グリスへ電話で報告する。
連絡を受けたグリスは、しばらく考え込んでから、リサにノートに触れ、ページを繰るよう指示した。
装丁の裏表は黒一色だったが、そこには名前が書かれていた。
名前は、今朝のニュースで見たニューアーク国際空港で墜落したパイロットの名前だった…

Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae) - castor oil plant; native to tropical Africa, naturalized throughout the tropics - seeds; the seeds of the castor oil plant, called 'castor beans', contain a very valuable oil that is used both as a purgative as well as a lubricant for jet engines and heavy machinery. The seeds are also infamous for containing ricin, one of the strongest poisons found in nature. One milligram can already be enough to kill an adult. At their micropylar end the seeds bear a fatty elaiosome to attract ants for dispersal; seeds c. 12mm long.
Some interesting facts about Ricinus:
Ricin: The seeds from the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis, are poisonous to people, animals and insects. One of the main toxic proteins is "ricin", named by Stillmark in 1888 when he tested the bean's extract on red blood cells and saw them agglutinate. Now we know that the agglutination was due to another toxin that was also present, called RCA (Ricinus communis agglutinin). Ricin is a potent cytotoxin but a weak hemagglutinin, whereas RCA is a weak cytotoxin and a powerful hemagglutinin. Poisoning by ingestion of the castor bean is due to ricin, not RCA, because RCA does not penetrate the intestinal wall, and does not affect red blood cells unless given intravenously. If RCA is injected into the blood, it will cause the red blood cells to agglutinate and burst by hemolysis. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. The symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. The symptoms are: abdominal pain, vomiting and (sometimes bloody) diarrhea. Within several days there is severe dehydration, a decrease in urine, and a decrease in blood pressure. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days, the victim usually recovers.
Castor oil: Castor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble, therefore, castor oil does not contain ricin, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production.
Murder: In 1978, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. 适宜于糖尿病人食用：菊粉能够帮助控制血糖，降糖 (欧美，日本主要做为糖尿病人治疗服用); 用于配合胰岛素治疗，能够不增加血糖指数。
2. Inulin
Inulin is natural, functionality fructose-oligosaccharides which is also a soluble dietary fiber. It is natural carbohydrate and is almost not acid hydrolysis and digestible. Therefore before reach to the colon, it is not compromised and will be fermented by lot of useful microorganism in the colon; hence this is the characteristics of fructose-oligosaccharides and dietary fiber. Inulin as a functional sugar substitute, is a major modern functional food additive, and is widely used in food, medicines and health products.
Effect of Inulin
Gastrointestinal function regulation: Inulin has a proliferation of bifidobacteria in human body, which can suppress the growth of intestinal salmonella and spoilage bacteria, promote intestinal peristalsis, prevention and treatment of constipation.
Enhance immunity: Inulin in the human body helps vitamin synthesis, promote minerals absorption, increased antibody, proliferating cells and increase the activity of NK cells, enhance immune function.
Detox beauty: Taking inulin helps body diathesis; reduce the burden to the liver, kidney and other organs. Inulin plays a role of detoxification by formation of rectal defecation reflex from synergistic effect of Inulin with bifidobacterium. It is safe and effective, without any side effects.
Improvement of lipid metabolism: This unique dietary fibre improves lipid metabolism, and reduce high density lipoprotein in the blood, increase low density lipoprotein, indirectly reduce blood fat, cholesterol and fat. Inulin is not easily absorbed by the body, and it will not synthesis fat by sugar metabolism, hence achieve weight loss.
Prevention of dental caries: Inulin is not easy to make dental caries’s pathogen agglutination, volume of lactic acid formed on the gear surfaces is 23-50% lower than sucrose, caries rates far lower than sucrose, so is suitable for children.
Suitable for a diabetic: Inulin helps control blood sugar, reduces blood sugar (Europe, and America, and Japan used mainly for diabetes treatment); combined with insulin therapy, shows no increase to the glycemic index.

This is an "old school" typing of my blood group (AB0 and RhD) in Cambodia. I am AB RhD+, which you can see because of the agglutination in all pools (which contain my blood + added antibodies).
Modern laboratories mostly use manual gel cards or automatized systems for blood grouping.
Agglutination Viewers, associated with a mirror and light source for antigen typing donors and receivers. Because of the adjusting feature of the mirror it is helpful for the technologists to observe the reaction in the test tube from the bottom and the top both at the same time. The agglutination viewers are most commonly used in the medical labs and blood banks for performing any kind of blood type testing.

Amateurish and lazy explorations of Calvary Cemetery and the Greater Newtown Pentacle, with associated blog postings foisted upon an unsuspecting public and amplified by a never ending barrage of self promoting debasements of all that is true, have revealed many strange things to your humble narrator, and by extension- to you my gentle lords and ladies of Newtown. Today, the Doherty monument in First Calvary gets its turn. There is nothing “odd” about the monument, in fact the reason I call attention to the thing is the supernal beauty of its working. This is one uncanny bit of carving, and unfortunately these photos do not do it justice (still adjusting to the new camera).
Art school faculty, turtlenecked and smoking french cigarettes, would probably describe it as “Sophia, goddess of wisdom- in the form of a christian angel, sitting within a Roman structure, crowned by a cross- representing an agglutination of civilized democratic-christian progress advancing since the time of the Greeks and the Roman Republic and ultimately manifested as The United States. The angel casts her eye skyward, vigilant, with a sword in her hand. A pacific and expectant expression suggests the nearness of the second coming and resurrection of the dead.”
Such imperious and hyperbolic thinking was very much in vogue in the years between 1900 and the first World War.

This Centers for Disease Control microbiologist was shown here delivering tissue culture specimens into a microtiter plate using an instrument know as a pipetter. The culture samples were to be tested for the presence of the influenza virus.
The presence or absence of influenza virus would be determined by using an agglutination test. If it involved the agglutination, or clumping of red blood cells (RBCs), the phenomenon is known as hemoagglutination.
Diagnostic tests available for influenza include viral culture, serology, rapid antigen testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and immunofluorescence assays. Sensitivity and specificity of any test for influenza might vary by the laboratory that performs the test, the type of test used, and the type of specimen tested. Among respiratory specimens for viral isolation or rapid detection, nasopharyngeal specimens are typically more effective than throat swab specimens. As with any diagnostic test, results should be evaluated in the context of other clinical and epidemiologic information available to health-care providers.

These tiny structures were formed by millions of amoebas clumping together. Having swallowed up all surrounding bacteria, the hungry unicellular organisms worked together to ward off starvation. One-fifth sacrificed themselves to form the stems, allowing the others to rise above the scrum. Transformed into a cluster of spores, they wait for more favourable conditions. Studying how these cells communicate helps us understand similar human immune cells.

Ces structures miniatures sont formées par l’agglutination de millions d’amibes. Affamés, ces organismes unicellulaires ont englouti toutes les bactéries qui se trouvaient aux alentours. Pour contrer la famine, elles se regroupent : un cinquième des amibes meurt pour former la tige et donner la chance aux autres de s’élever au-dessus de la mêlée. Devenues un amas de spores, elles attendent le retour de conditions favorables. En se penchant sur la communication intercellulaire, cette recherche nous permet de comprendre les mécanismes également mis en œuvre par nos cellules immunitaires.
