These five waders, a Eurasian Curlew and four Bar-tailed Godwits can be aged by their moult patterns. After breeding adult birds (across most species) moult their flight feathers as well as a lot, if not all, their body feathers. Juveniles have only had their feathers for a few months so do not need to moult (that would be a waste of resources) and remain in their juvenile plumage although there may well be some moult of body feathers. Some smaller species (sparrows, starlings, Long-tailed Tits, etc) do undergo a full post juvenile moult only a few weeks after fledging. So in this photo, the Curlew is an adult as it is in advanced wing moult. Of the four tailing godwits, the first three are adults for the same reason but the fourth bird has a complete set of flight feathers, indicating it is a juvenile. The remnants of breeding plumage (reddish feathers) can be seen in the adults.

The relentless march of time deepens the lines on a weathered face, it quietly signals a inevitable passing of the torch. Ageing carries with it a profound weight of wisdom and lived experience, yet the natural order of society ensures that every generation must eventually yield to the next. The eager ambition of youth inevitably rises to depose the old, challenging established traditions and redefining the future in their own image. While this transition can feel like a melancholic erasure of those who paved the way, it remains a vital catalyst for renewal—a dynamic cycle where the energy of the young reshapes a world built upon the foundations of the old.

An ageing truck that remains in the fight despite the obvious wear and tear of hard times and countless miles. There is a certain unique beauty in that, a beauty which is especially admirable. It's the message found in the story, "Chariots of Fire," in the ship's log of the U.S.S. Constitution, in the life story of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, and in all the incredibly brave and resolute people of Ukraine.

Not sure on this one. It has all the shape of a Waxcap but none of the colour. Any ID would be welcome. It was up on High Moor, Macclesfield among numerous wax caps and similar.

I cut these gladioli from my Gold Coast hinterland home garden to protect them from the weather. As it happened age did weary them, but colourfully.
