I have seen many temples all over Thailand but nothing quite like the charming Wat Chalermprakiat, located on a mountain top overlooking jungle and rice fields below. It certainly is an adventure getting there. A truck hauls visitors half way up the mountain over steep terrain as you cling on for your life. The final 1000 meter ascent is achieved by climbing steps, that I think is doable if you are in reasonable shape.

Thanks for stopping by! Keep the adventure alive my friends!

Week 21

Up to the tower! This week felt a lot longer than just a week. I had a lot of stuff with work happen and with that my nights out diminished for a little bit. I went out on Wednesday for an urbex with George and Alex which was a lot of fun. We went to some towers that I haven't been to since January. After that we drove around till midnight taking photos but the unusually still water. It created some insanely perfect reflections as you can see in the second photo. Let me remind you that that isn't a lake I was on. That is a bay that connects directly to the ocean and it was that still. It was incredible. The only other time I was able to go out this week was on Saturday. I headed out with George and Scott in the afternoon, we hit up the skatepark and of course I wiped out and messed up my shoulder. Thankfully it wasn't bad enough to stop me from doing anything else. We decided to hit up the towers again but this time we were going to stop at another building beforehand. It is one that I have wanted to see for a long time but never went out of my way to check it out. We got in and out just fine but it was way too unstable and covered in awful mold. It was disgusting. Luckily, the towers never fail. We got up and it was such a great night for them! With my new tripod I was able to get a shot I have wanted to ever since I first got in the the towers. I hope you enjoy these photos and I hope to keep the adventures alive this summer.

I can't wait to see what this next week will bring!

Legend has it that the Greek philosopher Empedocles (Ἐμπεδοκλῆς; ca. 490–430 BC) climbed on Etna and threw himself into the large crater (Central or Main Crater) then existing on the summit of the volcano. One facet of the legend holds that he did so in order to become an immortal god; another that he wanted to convince people that he was able to survive the fire of the volcano and return from his adventure alive. One particularly popular detail of the legend is that the volcano swallowed Empedocles' body but spewed out one of his sandals made of bronze. In reality it seems that the philosopher did not jump into the crater but, after his adventure on Etna, continued to live for some time, actively participating in the political and cultural life of Siracusa, his home town in southeast Sicily.

The place where, according to the legend, Empedocles' sandal was found became known, sometime later, as the "Tower of the philosopher", Torre del Filosofo. It seems that in Roman time, a building of stone was erected on the site, which may have inspired the idea of the tower. The place coincides with the rim of a small caldera (a major volcanic collapse depression) formed in the year 122 B.C. during Etna's most violently explosive eruption in the past 10,000 years. Much later, in the late-1960s, a new building was constructed at the site, which was meant to serve as a mountain hut but was never inaugurated and eventually buried under the flank of a new cone in 2002-2003. That building was also known as "Torre del Filosofo", and the place where it now lies a few meters underground has kept that name.

This is a view southward from the summit of the New Southeast Crater on Etna, 14 December 2011 across the plain near Torre del Filosofo (snow-covered flat area in lower half of image) and the cones formed during the 2002-2003 eruption (Monte Barbagallo; see notes) and the 2001 eruption (half-officially called "Monte Josémaría Escrivá", but better known as "Laghetto" cone) as well as the Montagnola (formed in 1763), toward the Gulf of Catania and the bay of Augusta in the distance at left.

March 12, 2008: Some goofy tourist left this sign, after that day's segment of the Today Show ended. How tacky! Rumor has it that this particular tourist got to shake hands with both Al and Meredith.

There were 2 of them scrapping with each other, but I only managed to capture one. They wouldn't hold still...

With the introduction of the Yeti line back in 2014, the bar was set. Axial introduced a vehicle that featured independent front suspension(IFS) with a floating solid rear axle, something commonly reserved only for the full size off-road realm. This time around, the decision was made to make things a wee bit smaller, while still providing a high level of performance. Enter, The Yeti Jr.™ SCORE® Trophy Truck® - RTR. We’ve taken all that you’ve come to love and appreciate in the Yeti chassis, but shrunk it down to 1/18th scale. It’s powered by a 380 sized brushed motor which provides the perfect amount of torque and speed for this tiny Trophy Truck® monster. Also featuring a bespoke all-in-one programmable Tactic ESC and receiver, paired with a 3-wire micro high torque steering servo. At the end of the day, the goal was to build a simple, fun, and easy to drive Yeti that anyone can handle. The hardest part about the Yeti Jr.™ SCORE® Trophy Truck® is making sure you have enough battery packs charged in order to keep the adventure alive! And to top it off we went straight to Roger Norman, CEO/President of SCORE® International, for his blessing and for official licensing.

This is my last photo for Project 365.

I'm done!

I started this on September 22, 2008, not really knowing what I had gotten myself into. There have been many ups and downs just keeping this little adventure alive... Thank you for your all for tuning in, for your comments, and for your encouragement!

Today is Leonard Cohen's 75th birthday. If you know me at all, you'll know I'm crazy for Cohen, so I thought it fitting that I pay tribute to a famous photo of him on this day.

I've been musing about all of the changes that have happened over the past year, and it's occurred to me to write something up, but I'll leave that for another time, I think. It's late, and tomorrow is another day. Instead, I'll leave you with these lines from Leonard Cohen's song, "Anthem":

The birds they sang

at the break of day

Start again

I heard them say

Don't dwell on what

has passed away

or what is yet to be.

Ah the wars they will

be fought again

The holy dove

She will be caught again

bought and sold

and bought again

the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in everything

That's how the light gets in.

To be honest with you, the first day of driving through cities in overcast weather made me feel down, so much so that I was thinking about abandoning this trip. I missed my wife, worried about work, costs, and all the practical things of life. It had been a while since I had been single and took a trip like this on my own, so I thought that to quit would be completely missing the point.

On top of that I could not find my campgrounds when I arrived at Bar Harbor, but that turned out to be a really good thing because I stayed at this 4 star Inn and it turned out that a good night's sleep was all that I needed to keep the spirit of adventure alive.

At this point, I am always feeling my pockets etc to make sure I've still got the keys, or have already stowed them properly, or putting something else in my backpack., etc. Once we all get onthe water, it changes: you make do if you forgot something.

I decided to try the soup prepared in the cafeteria at work. The kitchen staff make a Greek chicken orzo soup with lemon that I enjoy. Alas, I have given up meat. The meatless option was this navy bean soup. I did not bother asking if they used chicken stock. "Don't ask. Don't tell." is my policy on the days when I am desperate to keep this soup adventure alive.

This soup was chunky and mildly flavored with pepper and some herb. If I want to count myself as a foodie, I should probably learn to recognize certain spices and herbs with greater ease. I should also read up on bean and lentil varieties. I must confess that I had never heard of navy beans before. These are apparently similar to the other white bean--Great Northern. In my meat-eating days I made a killer white chicken chili with Great Northern beans.
