Bone White Song, 2017. Oil on plaster on canvas. Gagosian Gallery

Jumping back to August now with a meet up Tim and I had with Adrian, who I went to school with! Adrian is one of twins, but he is the only one of the two on Facebook. We had started messaging at the beginning of lockdown and agreed it would be nice to see each other after all these decades!

I was worried Tim would be bored with all our chat about our school days, but they shared a passion for motorbikes so I was the one feeling like a spare part for quite a while!

Adrian and Shana had a little outing!

He loves the rain,

she loves cocaine

and none of them loves Neil Young.

He's been away

she's been around;

in different ways they lived happy.

Breathing's automatic

They live happy,

breathing 'til they don't.

Austrian actor Adrian Hoven (1922-1981) was the athletic and dynamic Sonnyboy of the German cinema in the 1950s, who would become one of the stars of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's films in the 1970s. As a writer, producer and director he made horror and erotica with SM overtones.

Adrian Hoven was born as Wilhelm Arpad Hofkirchner in Wöllersdorf, Niederösterreich (Austria) in 1922. He was discovered during WW II by director Helmut Weiss and made his debut in the Heinz Rühmann comedy Quax in Afrika/Quax in Africa (Helmut Weiss, 1943-1947). After the war he decided to go to an acting school. He started to work on the Berlin stages, but again Weiss gave him a break in the cinema, the part of a cadet in Herzkönig/King of Hearts (Helmut Weiss, 1947). After the circus drama Tromba (Helmut Weiss, 1949), Hoven decided to concentrate solely on films. It would be the start of a successful career with more than 100 films. As the young hero or lover he seemed to excell in every genre; in melodramas like Dr. Holl/Affairs of Dr. Holl (Rolf Hansen, 1951), in comedies like Die unentschuldigte Stunde/The Unexcused Hour (Willi Forst, 1957), in romances like Mädchenjahre einer Königin/The Story of Vickie (Ernst Marischka, 1954) and ...wie einst Lili Marleen/Like Once Lili Marleen (Paul Verhoeven, 1956), but also in war films like Canaris/Canaris: Master Spy (Alfred Weidenmann, 1954) and Rommel ruft Kairo/Rommel Calls Cairo (Wolfgang Schleif, 1959). With his black hair and blue eyes he looked as dashing in a dinner jacket as in a uniform.

In 1965 Adrian Hoven founded with Pier A. Caminneci the production company Aquila Film Enterprises and made his first film as a director, writer and producer, the psycho thriller Der Mörder mit dem Seidenschal/The Murder With the Silk Scarf (Adrian Hoven, 1966) starring Carl Möhner. The film was not a box office success so he switched to more commercial genres like horror and erotica. He produced the SM fantasy Necronomicon/Geträumte Sünden/Succubus (Jesus Franco, 1966), which became an international cult hit. He also occasionally tried his hand at screenwriting under the nom de plume of Percy Parker. As an actor he could be seen in European thrillers and horror exploitation, including Avec la peau des autres/With the Lives of Others (Jacques Deray, 1966) starring Lino Ventura, Rote Lippen, Sadisterotica/Two Undercover Angels (Jesus Franco, 1969), and Hexen bis aufs Blut gequält/Mark of the Devil (Michael Armstrong, 1970) starring Herbert Lom and Udo Kier.

More challenging was Adrian Hoven's work for the Neue Deutsche Film. He played a transvestite in Schatten der Engel/Shadow of Angels (Daniel Schmid, 1976) and he worked for several prestigious (TV-)films by the great director Rainer Werner Fassbinder: Welt am Draht/World on Wires (1973) with Klaus Löwitsch, Martha (1974) featuring Margit Carstensen, Faustrecht der Freiheit/Fox and His Friends (1975) as the father of Peter Chatel, Angst vor der Angst/Fear of Fear (1975), Satansbraten/Satan's Brew (1976), Despair (1978) starring Dirk Bogarde, the 15-hour TV Mini-Series Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) and Lili Marleen (1981) with Hanna Schygulla. He also worked as a TV host. His son Percy Hoven works as an actor and TV presenter too. Adrian Hoven died in 1981 in Tegernsee, Germany. he was 58. His final film was the carnival drama Looping - Der lange Traum vom kurzen Glück/Looping (Walter Bockmayer, Rolf Bührmann. 1981) with Hans Christian Blech.

Old Presbyterian Parsonage

435 Dennis St.

Built in 1895

Samuel E. Hart was the owner of the Hart & Shaw Drugstore, which was located on the southwest corner of Main and Maumee streets in Adrian. Hart’s father Joseph, whom Samuel referred to as “Deacon” Hart, had been a founder and promoter of the first Presbyterian Church in Samuel’s hometown of Albion, New York. Samuel Hart assisted in erecting the Presbyterian Church in Adrian in which he had been a member since 1845.

When he died in 1893, his family decided to hire local architect Christian Frederick Matthes to build this impressive, Queen Anne-style house for the Presbyterian Church, whose ministers used it as their parsonage until 1950.

Matthes was responsible for designing and building some of the most elaborate Queen Anne style houses in the Dennis and State Streets Historic District where this house is found.

Strolling the Beach of Daytona throughout the day of New Years Eve.My Daughter and I spotted this man taking selflies with his SmartPhone…We both offered our services and promised to e-mail him our shots…This is one of my versions.

Ahi esta el tio con tan sólo 10 dias de vida y mirando al mundo con descaro!!

While in the Ben Gurion Airport, waiting for boarding time, I happened to be sitting at the same table as this young man. We started talking, found out that we were both travelling to Helsinki and ended up spending an hour long conversation.

Adrian was excited and happy to participate in my photo project, although I didn't tell him about it at first.

I found out that Adrian, 32 y/o, is originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Luis_Potos%C3%AD but has been living in Finland for the past seven years.

He studied engineering in Hämeenlinna www.hameenlinna.fi/en/front-page/

and after graduating he moved to Helsinki where he now lives and works.

Adrian has learned Finnish, a language which was totally unknown to him before his arrival.

He shares a flat with two roommates, a Finnish and a Nicaraguan so he gets to practice everyday his language skills.

We even chatted a bit in French, although we mainly conversed in English.

Adrian spent the last ten days in Israel, a country he has heard about but never visited until now. In his youth he was interested in mysticism and felt that Judaism talked to his heart. He decided to learn some Hebrew and even got a tattoo on his right ribs saying in Hebrew: Ahava & Shalom, meaning Love & Peace.

"I hope it's spelled correctly," he laughed and I assured him that it was.

By this time, I had already told Adrian about my love of photography, mainly photographing people. He was interested to learn more about it.

He took time and reflected about my interview questions before answering, and once we were done, he suddenly asked me if I wouldn't mind answering the same questions myself.

I was surprised that he thought of asking, and of course, I did answer. I find it's only normal to be curious in return. I told Adrian that in all the years that I've been doing my photo project, very seldom has any of my strangers asked me to answer these questions.

We pondered together about what might have been the reasons. I am still not quite sure whether it has to do with people being shy, discreet, feeling uncomfortable to ask personal questions, not interested, or just didn't think about it at the time.

Adrian's message would be to meditate, to flush out emotions.

My question about his advice to his younger self got him into telling me a story about the book of Corey Wayne: How to be a 3% man.

When he was younger he was very insecure about meeting girls. The beginnings seemed OK, but they didn't continue well. He even listened to his mother's advice, but it didn't work for him.

After reading the book, however, he understood what he was doing wrong. The concept of the book helped him to relax with girls and after that things have been going well.

I could tell that Adrian had a caring and loving relationship with his mother. She has raised him on her own as his father disappeared pretty much at the beginning. When they met, he presented himself a widower, but it turned out he wasn't free at all.

One of the struggles in Adrian's life was his mother's condition of epilepsy. He still remembered his feelings as a four year old child when he saw it happening. With time, and with the right medicines, his mother's seizures became less frequent. They both learned to live with them, except when his Mom decided to follow some people's advices. Quitting the medicines, trying something else brought the seizures back.

Nowadays, however, she is doing well, but Adrian has sometimes guilt feelings for not being closer to her. She, on the other hand, encourages him to live his own life and assures him that she is OK.

Adrian's Mom is 61 y/o, a nurse and has a large and loving community in her church. As a Christian believer she has visited Israel a few times, following in the footsteps of Jesus.

An hour has passed by so fast and as Adrian and I headed to our gate, I felt that we have learned a lot about each other.

Adrian also told me about a photo idea he has had for quite a while. As a Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, he would like to have pictures of the different grabs in this sport activity. Obviously he needs a photographer, but I don't usually like to photograph in studios. Maybe we could work out something, doing a photo session outdoors... Well, we'll see.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu

In the plane Adrian helped placing my carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment. We wished each other a safe flight and he moved a few rows behind me to his seat.

Four and a half hours later, when we landed, we found each other again. When his bus arrived, we hugged as old friends do and promised to stay in touch.

I am always grateful for running into such wonderful people on my path.

Built ca. 1860

A home in this exactly location at the intersection of W. Maumee Street and Maple Ave. was indicated on plat maps of Adrian as early as 1874 under the name "Raymond". The 80 acre estate was owned by a Charles Haire in 1893. RH and ES Ferguson owned the estate in 1916 and 1928, respectively.

This carpenter gothic home now serves a law office for Koselka DeVine Attorneys at law.
