Adolphe Sax received the patent for his new invention in 1847. Born in Belgium, Mr. Sax eventually moved his factory to Paris and produced many instruments at 50 rue St Georges St. Mr. Sax went on to create a number of other well respected instrument developments.

Adolphe Valette (1876-1942) French painter and teacher in the School of Art 1907-1920..

 

This building was the original Manchester School of Art. The Manchester School of Design was set up in 1838, only the second design school in Britain, and became the Manchester School of Art soon after. It was here in the early years of the 20th century that LS Lowry studied. His teacher was Adolphe Valette.

 

Adolphe Valette was born in 1876 in the industrial town of St Etienne, and came to England in 1904. He settled in Manchester and studied at the Manchester School of Art and taught there from 1906 to 1920. Amongst his students was LS Lowry.

 

When Valette was an art student in France, the Impressionist movement was at its height. By the end of the 19th century art galleries and collectors all over Europe were buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and others. When Valette arrived in Manchester he brought first hand knowledge of Impressionist painting with him which he was able to share with his students, including LS Lowry. ‘Forain, Monet, Degas and the French Impressionists were his gods’, as one of his students put it.

 

It was between 1908 and 1913 that he completed his major Impressionist Manchester cityscapes. In 1908 he produced his first Manchester painting depicting Manchester Ship Canal. He fully understood the Impressionist practice of painting en plein air, capturing an immediate visual impression of a scene and rendering the exact effect of light.

 

Soon after his arrival in Manchester, Valette enrolled as a student in the evening classes at the Municipal School

of Art at All Saints, now part of Manchester Metropolitan University. His talent was quickly recognised and he was encouraged to apply for the position of Master of Painting and Drawing. He accepted this post ‘on the condition that he should teach the pupils by actually painting with them.

 

In 1928 Valette left Manchester, due to ill health and following the death of his mother. He moved permanently to Blace in the Beaujolais region of France, settling in a cottage which he inherited from his mother and where he had spent many holidays.

Both artists were associated with the Barbizon School of painters in France, whose naturalistic depictions of the French countryside and its inhabitants prefigured Impressionism." "Constant Troyon is not an artist who is well known today but in the second half of the 19th century he had a truly international reputation. He was famous for his paintings of domestic animals – usually cows and sheep – in a landscape setting. There are four of his paintings in the collection of Glasgow Museums.

 

One of his favourite subjects was depicting cowherds and shepherds leading their flocks and herds safely homewards under an evening sky. Returning from Market is typical of these paintings. Against a distant and dark horizon we see, in the foreground, a small flock of sheep and two oxen making their way down a slight hill and about to enter a stream. The cowherd, in shadow, is only vaguely indicated. The artist is much more interested in describing the warm browns and golds of the ox and contrasting this against the thick, creamy, almost muddy colour of the sheep. He delights in capturing the textures of the coats of the animals, playing off the ‘bobbly’ wool of the sheep against the smoother hair of the ox. He uses impasto – thick stokes of paint - to help him suggest this texture.

 

Typical of the artists of the Barbizon group, Troyon paid great attention to effects of light. The sky has darkened over except for the dying light glimpsed along the horizon and again at the top right – the very last glimmers highlighting the backs of the sheep and the side of the ox.

 

The art dealer David Croal Thomson – through whom many of Troyon’s canvases entered British private collections – wrote in 1902 that Troyon ‘painted his animals from the life, not making them stand like still life objects, but to run, walk, or ruminate, while they also live and breathe.’ " Glasgow Collections website.

Montmartre Cemetery (Cimetière de Montmartre) is a cemetery in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. Officially known as the Cimitière du Nord, it is the third largest necropolis in Paris, after the Père Lachaise Cemetery and the Montparnasse Cemetery.

 

In the mid-18th century, overcrowding in the cemeteries of Paris had created numerous problems, from impossibly high funeral costs to unsanitary living conditions in the surrounding neighborhoods. In the 1780s, the Cimetière des Innocents was officially closed and citizens were banned from burying corpses within the city limits of Paris. During the early 19th century, new cemeteries were constructed outside the precincts of the capital: Montmartre in the north, Père Lachaise Cemetery in the east, Passy Cemetery in the west and Montparnasse Cemetery in the south.

 

The Montmartre Cemetery was opened on January 1, 1825. It was initially known as la Cimetière des Grandes Carrières (Cemetery of the Large Quarries). The name referred to the cemetery's unique location, in an abandoned gypsum quarry. The quarry had previously been used during the French Revolution as a mass grave. It was built below street level, in the hollow of an abandoned gypsum quarry located west of the Butte near the beginning of Rue Caulaincourt in Place de Clichy. As is still the case today, its sole entrance was constructed on Avenue Rachel under Rue Caulaincourt.

 

A popular tourist destination, Montmartre Cemetery is the final resting place of many famous artists who lived and worked in the Montmartre area.

River and State was commissioned by the ICOA Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Feng, Conductor, as part of their New World/New Music series. The piece is in honor of the 125th anniversary of Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony, From the New World, and was premiered at the Bohemian National Hall in NYC. The accompanying composition is Dvorshock by Bruce Adolphe - also commissioned by the ICOA. The premiere of River and State featured a live performer, Laura King-Pazuchowski, on stage with the orchestra, interacting with the VR environment we developed. This video was captured from within the VR environment used during the performance. The music is a live recording of Dvorshock.

 

Our concept for this virtual cinema performance is about the promise of a new world, its unlimited potentials, personal freedoms and inevitable progress, and how technology has always played a role in these fantasies.

 

Our performer, Laura King-Pazuchowski traversed the membrane of our shared environment of lived experience and the fantasy of virtual, illimitable, dream-space.

 

The VR environment features renderings of Lower Manhattan, Inwood Hill Park, Ellis Island, and an amalgam of different Subway stations. The piece is also inspired by observing flash floods on certain Manhattan streets built above drained streams. whose resulting chaos suggest the transposed, consistent presence of foundational forces occluded by the trappings of contemporary material culture.

 

The Tulips are a reference to the Tulip tree of Inwood Hill Park where the initial meeting, and subsequent purchase of Manhattan from the Native population occurred. The tree died in the 1933. The sculpture of the Tulips encountered during the capsule scene is a rendering of a currently infamous Jeff Koons sculpture that has a connection to the Statue of Liberty.

 

The metronome seen at the beginning on the shore returns in the final scene as a monument sized rendering of Man Ray's "Indestructible Object". The character in front of the metronome in the final scene is a rendering of the performance artist.

The Adolphe ran aground here at what was then known as the oyster banks during a storm in the late 1800s. A lot of ships came to rest here before they built the breakwall. Before then the entrance to the harbour was one of the riskiest in the world
