"The remarkable dancing of sandhill cranes is systemic, contagious, addictive, and enthusiastic. Long intricate displays frequently involve the circling of one crane around a stationary partner or the mutual rotation of both partners. Although the dancing is most common in the breeding season, sandhill cranes can engage in their spontaneous dance displays throughout the entire year. The sequences of coordinated dance steps are often seen at summer nesting territories, but are also seen more rarely at roosting and staging sites.
Courting cranes are magnificent as they stretch their wings, pump their heads, bow, and leap into the air in a graceful and energetic dance. Successfully paired sandhill cranes are strictly monogamous and typically mate for life. Juvenile sandhill cranes begin to select their mates between the age of two and five years of age, and remain paired for decades. Because of the stability of their lifelong relationship and its benefits, sandhill cranes are long-lived and commonly survive 20 or more years in the wild"...

Somethings are addictive apparently. Sugar is one but also watching the sunrise from the summit of Roseberry Topping. No inversion this time but a welcome sprinkling of snow in the early hours to set the scene.
Chocolate is addictive because it contains sugar and fat that trigger brain reward pathways. Generally, highly processed foods, including chocolates, are considered more addictive than foods with minimal processing.
Like any other addictive food — can cause a withdrawal-like response when you stop eating it. High-sugar foods are on top of the list of commonly-craved foods among Americans, with the average American taking in about 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily.
Multiple studies find that typical sweets like chocolate or cookies can be as addictive as cocaine or morphine. (I wonder how many chocolate addicts have turned to robbery or violence to "feed" their habit).

Oh damnit, the way Flickr resizes images, this looks like a really bad Photoshop job (when it's only a very simple one, haha. Yeah, sorry, couldn't resist the colours. Mmmm, colours.).
You'll need to check the large version anyway to see the OMG cool! reflection (see note).
6 days I'm practicing already to get the little birdies in my garden in flight.. Pretty nuts, I know. Well, on the bright side, you can't say I give up easy :-)
But I can tell you it has been one of the most frustrating weekends ever. Really super shots, if only they would have been 100% sharp. Much to Hans' despair I had put up an enormous construction lamp on the terrace for extra light. (he claimed the numbers on the electricity meter were 'motion blurred'). I was about ready to throw away my camera when Hans came up with the bright idea (in more than one way) to put up a mirror on the terrace that would reflect the sun!
That man is priceless as it worked like a charm. Immediately iso could come down, aperture could close and shutterspeeds went up. The birdies are wearing little Raybans now because the sun is shining from two sides in our garden! :-)
I can hear you think, why didn't she use flash(es)? Well, because I really liked the creamy bokeh of the beech in the background the long lenses gave me and besides I didn't want to disturb the little birds. As you will understand, the real reason was that I have no clue how to do it :-)
And apparently I'm someone who learns the hard way :-)
Anyway, I was soooooo happy with this shot! 1/5000sec was what it took to freeze the little Nuthatch in flight!!
But to avoid an exercise like this for the future I sent emails to two of my favorite photographers Gerry Sibell and Glenn Bartley for advice. Both of these kind and extremely talented men immediately replied extensively.
Right, to get dazzling images of birds in flight I will have to study multi-flash photography; a thing every possible website warns me of being totally frustrating and even more addictive. Thanks so much Gerry and Glenn. You guys are definitively the best!
It will be an interesting winter!!
These things are ADDICTIVE!

Come, all you fair and tender girls
That flourish in your prime
Beware, beware, keep your garden fair
Let no man steal your thyme
Let no man steal your thyme
For when your thyme is past and gone
He'll care no more for you
And in the place your time was waste
Will spread all over with rue
Will spread all over with rue
A woman is a branchy tree
And man's a clinging vine
And from her branches carelessly
He'll take what he can find

Star trails are addictive! This was taken in Culp Valley overlooking Borrego Springs. It didn't turn out quite like I had envisioned. I wish I had panned the camera over to the left a bit to catch the north star along with some other tweaks to the composition.... next time.

Slightly addictive to watch and try to photograph these butterflies in the barley field. This time I managed two of them with a few sparkles (actually plastic bagged hay bales).
