After a quick errand near the mall, I stopped at the mall's retention pond to watch birds. Two Red-Shouldered Hawks were observing activity on the pond from a snag. Due to the drought, a large portion of the pond has dried up and there are pockets of water and lots of tall vegetation. A Red-Winged Blackbird bravely harassed one of the hawks, and the other hawk flew to the top of a small pine tree nearby. Soon afterwards it dove into the vegetation in the pond and eventually emerged into view with its catch. I can't tell what it caught - I believe some kind of waterbird. The hawk carried it to the shore, then flew off into the nearby woods with it.
I know the hawk has to eat, but I always feel bad for the prey.
The Red-Winged Blackbird must have a nest nearby because I witnessed the same harassment a few days ago when a hawk was in the same tree.
At least four other birds (egrets, herons) were very close by when the hawk struck, yet none flew away. There almost seemed to be a stunned silence.
Conditions were windy and overcast, and due to the distance, I couldn't get a very good shot.

In between all the festivities (celebrating the 100th 'vierdaagse' / Walk of the World) this image caught my eye. Below the bridge, a crowd was enjoying themselves, listening to live music, dancing, talking, drinking, but this man did not seem interested in a party... or maybe he was using his mobile to invite someone to the party...

What to do with 20g of this flour,80g of that, and so on?
Throw them all together and make bread.
Although there was some 20% wholemeal in here I treated it all like white bread. Voilà you see the result. I'm especially pleased with the crunchy crust.
