The Hooded Merganser:

Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )

Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.

Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.

The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

Common toad (bufo bufo), European toad, toad

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_toad

The common toad, European toad, or in Anglophone parts of Europe, simply the toad (Bufo bufo, from Latin bufo "toad"), is a frog found throughout most of Europe (with the exception of Ireland, Iceland, and some Mediterranean islands), in the western part of North Asia, and in a small portion of Northwest Africa. It is one of a group of closely related animals that are descended from a common ancestral line of toads and which form a species complex. The toad is an inconspicuous animal as it usually lies hidden during the day. It becomes active at dusk and spends the night hunting for the invertebrates on which it feeds. It moves with a slow, ungainly walk or short jumps, and has greyish-brown skin covered with wart-like lumps.

After a stormy sort of day, this one appeared early evening over Bracebridge Heath.

Tofu is active in the morning and relaxes in the afternoon. The photo was taken on Sunday but as Tofu doesn't have to work he sticks to this schedule during the week too. What changes are the places where he descides to spend his afternoon siesta. On Sunday he chose the rocking chair in the living room.

Dante wrote the Comedy out of the one compulsion, that is, simply for truth’s sake – for truth’s sake you write theology because there is something that needs saying that calls for it, and you write poetry because that is the only way truthfully to say it.

The Southern Meat Ant (Iridomyrmex purpureus) is endemic to Australia. It was described by British entomologist Frederick Smith in 1858. It is among the best-known species of ant found throughout mainland Australia. Its enormous distribution, aggression and ecological importance have made this ant a dominant species. It is characterised by its dark-bluish body and red head. It is a medium to large species; workers and males are approximately the same sizes at 6–7 mm and 8 mm, respectively. The queens are the largest and appear mostly black, measuring 12.7 mm. The iridescence in workers ranges from green or blue to plain green and purple, varying in different body parts and castes. Meat ants inhabit open and warm areas in large, oval-shaped mounds that are accompanied by many entrance holes. The nest area is always cleared of vegetation and covered with materials including gravel, pebbles and dead vegetation. They are also polydomous, where a colony may be established in a series of satellite nests connected by well-defined paths and trails. Satellite nests are constructed away from the main nest and nearby areas with valuable food sources so workers can exploit them.

Queens mate with a single male and colonies may have more than one queen until the workers arrive, where they both exhibit antagonism. It takes around one or two months for an individual egg to develop into an adult. Colonies range in size, varying between 11,000 individuals to over 300,000. The meat ant is a diurnal species (active throughout most of the day), especially when it is warm. It forages on trees and collects sweet substances such as honeydew and nectar, and also captures insects or collects the remains of animals. A number of predators eat these ants, including the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), numerous species of birds, blind snakes and spiders. Meat ants establish territorial borders with neighbouring colonies and solve disputes through ritualised fighting.

Meat ants play an important role in both the environment and for humans. A single nest is capable of dispersing over 300,000 plant seeds; moreover, meat ants have formed symbiotic relationships with many insects. This ant may be used as a form of pest control to kill the cane toad, an invasive species. They can also help farmers to remove animal carcasses by consuming and reducing them to bones in a matter of weeks.

Another unwanted leader refusing to stand down: one of the two old DCs that seem to still be active down here was leading a decent Train 934 today.

This news warranted a picture, but the sun is still pretty high in the sky until about 4:30pm these days, so instead of going south, I figured there might still be some nose sun on the Waitaki. And there almost was.

The plan was to get another pic before the crossing with 925 at Studholme and then follow that back south.

Unfortunately, predicted cloud from the south at this time was materialising, so having dodged it at the Waitaki bridge and effectively missing the crossing because of road works, I passed on 925 and pressed on to Scarborough after getting a shot at Hook, knowing the chances were slim.

Indeed as I neared the railway the train was ahead of me, but it slowed down considerably, such that I was alongside the locos by the end of the road. Within seconds of stopping, the flying camera was away, flipped into Speedy Mode and it made it along the beach before the train did.

One more short wait and I closed off the day with the train departing Timaru. A productive few hours indeed....

Out this moring at sunrise to photography the Osprey activity. Had to wait a couple of hours as there was a heavy fog this Saturday moring. But once the fog lifted and the blue skies appeared the Ospreys were active like these two were on the grounds of Fort Pickens on the West end of Pensacola Beach Florida. For the shots today I used the Sony A9 with the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens. Be safe!

Stephens' Banded Snakes occur in forests along the coast and ranges of eastern NSW and Qld. They are arboreal, generally hiding in hollows or under bark and are most active nocturnally, but are sometimes observed active in the day.

The genus Perisama comprises 32 known species. They are medium-sized butterflies with blackish uppersides, marked with diagonal bands of turquoise or green on the forewings. Many species also have a band of the same colour around the hindwing margins. Perisama species are found mostly in the Andean cloudforests at altitudes between 1200-2400m.

The butterflies spend the early mornings and late afternoons settled high in the trees, but at about 0900hrs they suddenly become very active, and dash back and forth between the tree tops and the surface of the ground, where they seek mineral-rich moisture.

WIT: In the time of covid 19, I've been busy baking bread - I decided to try no-knead focaccia. I noticed on Instagram that focaccia flowers are a thing, and since I enjoy playing with my food, I thought I'd try my hand at it. The triptych represents the different stages of my focaccia, from raw ingredients to finished creation. It was yummy!
