There is just about one of everything from the serving line on this plate at the 9th or 10th annual community dinner to celebrate Thanksgiving. Typically families and friends gather at the home of the host, but hearkening back to the first Thanksgiving that is portrayed as an amicable repast of English colonists and locally resident Native Americans, this free public feast provides a way to share the holiday with others outside one's own family or circle of friends.

Donations of food and money, and the guidance of an organizing committee and dozens of volunteers to make and serve the food make all this possible. On top of the good will and social experience for young and old, the food is tasty, too. In the past few years a pre-event has been incorporated that allows those wishing a public worship experience to participate in an ecumenical (Christian) worship service in compact and streamlined form. In 2019 perhaps 40 people came before the feast to participate in the worship together.

On the Road

At the Grand Rapids Public Museum on this annual "free museum day" that the Smithsonian Institution coordinates with its many local affiliates this special exhibition for the momentous events 56 years earlier awaits visitors. But on this sunny warm Saturday in September most people seem to be elsewhere; not looking through the permanent or the special displays.

When it comes to civil society and active participation in events, organizations, and projects, estimates show that relatively few people get personally involved, but that those who do get involved very often have a deep and abiding commitment to the cause. So this photo could be an indication of this scarce presence and scant interest in things more than a few years old. So easily are freedoms and rights taken for granted, and equally easily these can be infringed upon or eroded without advocates and vigilance.
