Rather than to speak anonymously or at sociological scale, this part of the permanent exhibition at the Grand Rapids Public Museum does the reverse, showcasing individual instances of experience to personalize the process of leaving one's cultural and physical world behind and encountering the unknown society of the arrival country.

A composite picture is painted from the words taken from letters and diary passages, ethnic newspapers and documents, church and social organizations of mutual support for several of the non-English speaking expatriates making their lives is west Michigan. The episodes and life events recounted come from many ethnic groups and from different decades of the 19th and 20th centuries. Refugee resettlement has long been part of the wider Grand Rapids area with churches and individual households sponsoring and fostering families and individuals who arrive.

This wall of action figures is part of the special exhibition in fall 2019 at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. It is easy to understand why the display shelves are covered by a sheet of plexiglass, since (young) visitors would naturally want to touch or hold some of the piece, "seeing" kinesthetically, not just visually.

To the extent that memories adhere to objects and locations, "memory hooks," most visitors are likely to find at least one of the toys that would trigger playtime memories. In the age of 3-D printers, it is conceivable that some people would attach their own face or that of someone they choose, family, friend, celebrity, or historical personage to the figure (or beloved pet in the case of non-humanoid figures).

An interesting question to ask of museum acquisitions is the chain of custody that leads from concept, to prototype, to (mass) production model and its arrival in a particular point of sale, finally landing in the hands of the intended recipient to own and engage with before eventually turning up in the museum, no longer cherished by a particular person of a specific place and time, but now an anonymous specimen to illustrate an exhibition theme or another puzzle piece to add to a grown collection in a given category and catalog.

Background to the abolition of slavery at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_... as it fits into this special exhibition to mark civil rights legislation of the 1960s.

This photo shows part of the exhibition: foreground of the Proclamation (in facsimile), pedestal with manacles to control the enslaved person, panels along the far wall. While there has always been (and likely continue in present and future) slavery - informal or formal and public - the elaborate system of status, regulation, and control of people (intended for perpetuity) during the decades before the Civil War was especially daunting. It developed over many generations to its final form and 160 year later its legacy still seems to linger in some ways.

With its abundant maple and beech woodlands along the west side of Michigan's lower peninsula and the vast stands of white pine (Michigan's state tree) in the land north of Grand Rapids during the later 1800s, it was natural to tap the power of the flowing river to deliver logs and to power the mills to make furniture for the all over the country. Even 150 years later the furniture designers and makers of Herman Miller and Steelcase continue to do business, although plastics and metal often take the place of wood.

After the forests were cut down and industrial power came from steam heated by coal and later oil, the production center was not tied to a river for moving the logs and processing the wood products. Today those same multi-generation places of lifelong skilled and unskilled work stand still, but the interiors now serve as office, commercial real estate, restaurants, and private residences. The woodland is gone, the workers are in their final resting places, and the furniture they made is scattered around the country, sometimes handed from one generation to another; other times, the pieces are disposed of in estate sales to the highest bidder. Some of the wood ends up in a bonfire or occupies an abandoned building.

This museum scene recreates a workspace for skilled workers with little mass-production. Each piece of furniture was made with care, one at a time. Sometimes nicked-named, "furniture city," this downtown museum in the city of Grand Rapids is the right place to record those glory days of much of the city's livelihood before WWII and even in some employers afterward, too.
