The antecedents of the Carreras business began trading in the eighteenth century (the company's products and advertising materials consistently bore the motto 'Established 1788'), and forebears of the founder’s family were Spanish apothecaries. The founder of the business was a Spanish nobleman, Don José Carreras Ferrer, who fought in the Peninsular War under the Duke of Wellington (1808–1814). After serving and receiving the highest military honours, it is believed he was obliged to leave Spain on account of his political views.
In 1881, the first cigarette-making machine was patented in the United States by James Bonsack, and by 1883 one of the British manufacturers, W. D. & H. O. Wills, had pioneered the use of the Bonsack machine in England. Wills joined with twelve other companies to form the Imperial Tobacco Group, from which both Rothmans and Carreras chose to remain independent, and by 1901 the Bonsack machine, making 200 cigarettes a minute, was exclusively available only to members of this Group. Around this time another of the cigarette machine makers, Bernhard Baron, had returned to London from the United States in 1896 with a patent for a new machine which could make 450 cigarettes a minute. Baron's progress was watched with interest by Mr. Yapp who was by then running the Carreras business but who was keen to make cigarettes a paying venture.
Having been unable to sell his machines to the newly formed Imperial Tobacco Company, which had a monopoly on the Bonsack machines, Yapp was able to negotiate a business arrangement with Baron in 1903. On 6 June 1903, Carreras became a public company with Yapp and Baron as directors and, under the leadership of Bernhard Baron, heralded the beginnings of competition for the Imperial Tobacco Group and the new American maker, James Buchanan Duke, who was also capturing large slices of the British market with Ogden’s Guinea Gold, the first Virginia cigarette made in England. The original Carreras prospectus was heavily criticised in the City press, but within a short time, the shares were fully subscribed, particularly by members of the tobacco trade, who saw potential in the new venture. The Baron family had a reputation as good employers who treated their staff well.[citation needed] Bernhard Baron would walk amongst his employees daily, enquiring after their families, and his son, Louis, and his grandson, Maurice, also made regular visits to the factory floor. A tradition developed that on Bernhard's birthday, each December, all employees were given two weeks' wages and a cake to take home.
In 1904, an allied company was established. Called Carreras and Marcianus Ltd and operating from St James's Place, Aldgate EC3, the former Baron Machine Company works, the company’s purpose was to commence production of machine-made cigarettes. During the last six months of 1904 three brands made their debut, including Black Cat, the first cigarette in the United Kingdom to contain coupons that were redeemable for gifts.
In 1905 yet more brands were introduced such as Chick, Jetty, and Sweet Kiss and Carreras began coupon trading in Black Cat. The business prospered and in 1906 additional premises were opened nearby, introducing new brands such as Carreras Ovals and Seven Up. Baron chose many novel schemes for the promotion of Carreras’ pipe tobacco and cigarette brands. In 1909, the company introduced the Baron automatic pipe filler in cartridges, which revolutionised pipe smoking and sold by the millions.
In 1921, after the launch of Craven A, Carreras launched more brands such as Wall Arms, Piccadilly, and Turf. By 1927 the business had outgrown the Arcadia premises in City Road; the war had increased demand for cigarettes. In 1928, the famous Arcadia Works was opened in Mornington Crescent NW1, formerly a favourite residence of artists and writers. This building, which has become a major London landmark, was unusual in its design. It was the first factory in Britain to make use of pre-stressed concrete technology, and the first to contain air conditioning and a dust extraction plant. The company was also the first to provide full welfare services for its employees.[citation needed] The Arcadia Works was often visited by royalty, including the Duke of Windsor when he was the Prince of Wales, King George VI when he was the Duke of York, and the Duke of Kent. Many other important visitors from every part of the globe were entertained at Mornington Crescent. Leading to the entrance of the building were two large bronze cats.[3] Cast at the Haskins Foundry in London, these versions of the Egyptian god Bastet were each eight feet six inches tall and stood guard over Arcadia Works until 1959 when Carreras merged with Rothmans of Pall Mall and moved to a new factory in Basildon, Essex. The cats were separated, with one making the short journey to Essex, while the other went to be displayed outside the Carreras factory at Spanishtown, Jamaica.

This is one of a series of images I made with the Bing Image Creator, which is an AI image generator powered by DALL-E 3.
For most of these images I tried to combine multiple elements together into one, rather than creating a scene with multiple separate elements. This pushes the limits of what the AI model can do, and maximizes the amount of human control over the images. For example, I might use the text prompt ‘photo realistic snake plane made out of carbon fiber and gold’.
Here is my take on AI generated images vs. human made art: I think that the quality of AI generated images will NOT dramatically improve, even many years into the future. The ultimate goal of a creative image is to create a certain emotional state in the viewer. - Emotions themselves - are the main tool used to do this. A purely logic driven machine can only create a crude, generalized model of something meant to create a certain emotional state. When someone makes a piece of art, it is always some combination of using logic and emotions to guide the process. Remember that the ultimate goal is to create a certain emotional state in the viewer. Only having access to logic, but not emotions, will always create a very generic looking work. You need to actually be able to feel emotions to fine-tune the work beyond that, since creating emotions is the ultimate goal.
The main difference between an AI model and a human is not the difference in the power of the logic that can be deployed. The difference is that a human can feel emotions, which is key to creating an image (or text) made to create a certain emotional state. The logic that the best AI image generator models currently have seems to already be at the level of what the best human can do (based on some of the results I got, which was quite a shock). The results are still crude and generic compared to what a human can do, because the AI models have no access to emotions, which are the main tool for making and refining a creative work designed to create certain emotional states.
All creative work is built with a combination of logic and emotions (emotions should always be the main tool), and by not having direct access to emotions, a machine can only create crude, generic results. When I make music I always try and use emotions rather than logic to guide the process as much as possible, since creating a certain emotional state in the listener is the ultimate goal. The best AI models have an amazing ability to use logic to mix two different styles of images together since that is a logic driven process. They can’t make those images from scratch, since that is an emotion driven process, since it is all about creating certain emotions in the viewer.
Imagine you were a chef trying to develop a new dish, but you were not allowed to taste the food at any point as you made it. Your ability to determine the correct amount of salt and other seasonings would be very crude and limited. There would always be the possibility of a disaster happening, since you could not add a bit of seasoning at a time and taste it, so you would have to just dump it all in at once. This is the same idea of an AI model that is trying to ultimately create emotional states using sophisticated logic, but without having any access to emotions to guide the process.
The results will always be very generic looking, with the occasional unexpected gruesome image being returned. The power of the logic I have seen in some of the images I have created is quite shocking, but the results are still crude and generic compared to what a human can do, since the AI model is trying to create emotional states without being able to actually feel emotions itself, which is vital to creating emotional states through an image (or text).
The AI models have an amazing ability to combine multiple types of images together into one, but they have no understanding of what the individual elements they are combining together truly are. Again, this is because the individual images are designed to create certain emotional states, and an AI model has no ability to feel emotions, meaning it has no ability to understand them.
Having said all that, there is a good chance that the ability of humans to customize AI generated images will keep going up, and this will allow for this tool to create highly creative works close to what a human could do from scratch after all. I don’t think that the AI models will ever be able to do this by themselves with a simple button push though, as I have made the case for above. Also, I would expect that the number of images that are generated with a button push will keep going up and up.
Now, does making good AI generated images take talent? I say the answer is yes simply because these images are not all equal in quality. To create the best image in a set of 1,000 to 100,000,000 images, and to do so consistently, takes skill. You need to learn something from every single image you create about what the AI model does well and does not do well. You also need creative and artistic skills to come up with really good text prompts, in addition to this. The skills involved in this are similar to the skills involved in coming up with a great line in text, like in books, poems, speeches, scripts, ect. This is like abstract art. I know from experience that randomly applying different colors of paint never yields anything impressive. It takes a lot of talent to make good abstract art. Random combinations of words in text prompts will never create the results that highly targeted ones will, when it comes to AI generated images.

CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS
When Saint Paul preached in Athens, he did so on Mars Hill at a place called the Areopagus. There he was heard by Dionysius, a member of the highest court in Greece. He and his wife, Damaris, were baptized by Saint Paul, and in time Saint Paul made him the bishop of Athens. Saint Dionysius traveled some time with Saint Paul and became acquainted with the other Apostles.
Wishing to see the Virgin for himself, he went to Ephesus. Afterward he wrote this wonderful letter to Saint Paul describing his experience:
“I have seen with my own eyes the most holy Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who surpasses in sanctity all the Angels of heaven. By the grace of God, the good favor of the Apostles, and the unutterable goodness and mercy of the gracious Virgin, I was granted this meeting.
Again, I confess before the Almighty God, before the grace of the Savior, before the great glory of the Virgin, His Mother, that when I was introduced to the beautiful and most pure Virgin, together with John, the first among the Evangelists and Prophets, who, while living in the flesh shines like the sun in heaven, a great divine radiance shone about me from without and lit up my soul.
At the same time, I sensed such a wonderful fragrance that my spirit and body could hardly bear this manifestation of glory and foretaste of eternal bliss. From divine grace and glory, my heart and spirit were prostrated.”
“I bear witness before God, Who dwelt in that most honorable virginal womb, that no honor and glory of men can compare with that beatitude that I experienced, unworthy though I be. That moment in time for me was one of extreme happiness. I thank my most high and most gracious God, the divine Virgin, the great Apostle John, and thee, O Paul, the adornment of the Church and invincible leader, for having mercifully granted me such a great blessing!”
Epiphanius of Cyprus (320-404 A.D.) has given the following description of the Virgin Mary from the traditions with which he was acquainted.
“She was grave and dignified in all her actions. She spoke little and only when it was necessary to do so. She listened readily and could be addressed easily. She paid honor and respect to everyone.
“Her complexion was of the colour of ripe wheat, and her hair was auburn [very dark brown with a reddish tint]. Her eyes were bright and keen, and light brown in color, and the pupils thereof were of an olive-green tint. Her eyebrows were arched and deep black. Her nose was long, her lips were red and full, and overflowing with the sweetness of her words. Her face was not round, but somewhat oblong [oval]. Her hand was long and her fingers were long.
“She was wholly free from all ostentatious pride, and she was simple, unpretentious, and inclined to excessive humility. She wore garments of natural colors [i.e., undyed], and was content with them, a fact which is even now proved by her holy head-cloth.
“And to sum up, she was filled with divine grace in all her ways.”
