Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts, Mid-Iowa Health Foundation CEO, Dr. Nalo Johnson, By Degrees Foundation CEO Emily Westergaard and Harding Principal Chris Schmit were pleased to announce a gift of $140,000 from Mid-Iowa Health Foundation to expand 529 savings accounts to all students at Harding Middle School with a $200 seed investment into each account. Once opened, students can earn an additional $200 into their accounts annually by meeting various academic and personal milestones. This opportunity to earn will continue every year they attend Harding Middle and North High School, meaning that a Harding sixth grader could have over $1,000 in their account to use for postsecondary studies upon high school graduation.
By Degrees Foundation facilitates a unique asset-building program through which students at their partner schools can earn up to $200 annually into By Degrees-owned 529 college savings accounts by meeting various academic and personal milestones. Funds can be used upon high school graduation to pursue postsecondary education at any accredited postsecondary program, including technical and trade schools, 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities, and postgraduate degrees. Legal, accounting, governance, management and ethics fundamentals pertaining to formation and governance of a non-profit access corporation will be discussed in this session, including Articles of Organization and by-laws; 501c3 status; roles of the Board of Directors, Officers and members; and the Board’s fiduciary duties; avoidance of conflict of interest problems; practices necessary for maintaining tax exempt charitable status; importance of independent and professional financial controls, unrelated business income; and/or audit and the “post-Enron” importance of ensuring fiduciary standards and ethical conduct.
