11 July 2012 - Afghan civil society has demanded an active role in decision making, policy development and monitoring of the policy implementations within the framework of mutual accountability endorsed in the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan earlier this week.

The representatives of Afghan civil society, who attended the International Conference on Afghanistan in Tokyo, addressed a press conference today upon their return to Kabul.

Hayatullah Hayat, the spokesman of the Afghan civil society said that the international community has made funding commitments up to 2024 but these funding is not clear on yearly basis. He demanded from the international community to specify the funding commitments for each year in the lead up to 2024.

“Funding commitments are also not clear for priority sectors such as agriculture, education and health,” said Hayatullah. “Afghan Government should strictly consider issues of human rights and environment protection while awarding contracts to the foreign countries in the mining sector.”

The civil society representatives also demanded from the Afghan government to share with them reports of Financial Management Policy, which has been endorsed for up to December 2012.

Another speaker in the press conference, Ajmal Balochzada said he told that participants of the Tokyo Conference that Afghan government should accelerate its efforts on anti-corruption, anti-terrorism, good governance, human rights, women’s rights and rule of law and the flow of international funding should be linked with progress on these matters.

“In the wake of its past ten-year performance, concerns exist among the international community on the ability of the Afghan Government to have any significant achievement during the coming two years,” said Balochzada.

A total of 30 representatives of the Afghan civil society – 50 per cent of them being women – travelled to Tokyo last week to attend an international conference of civil society in Tokyo on 7 July 2012 and the main international conference a day later.

These representatives were elected earlier in a national gathering of civil society organizations in Kabul to advocate on behalf of civil society organizations and people of Afghanistan on key national issues with the international and national decision makers in Tokyo.

Over 70 Government representatives and international organizations participated in the daylong conference, which agreed to provide US$ 16 billion to meet Afghanistan’s economic and development needs through 2015. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Conference that the UN would extend “strong support” to Afghanistan throughout the Transformation Decade, 2015-2025, while calling on donors to continue to keep the flow of their assistance. The UN chief also called on Afghanistan to play its part according to the Mutual Accountability Framework endorsed by the Conference.

Just half a pound off this week but, given the diet I was on to prep for my visit to the hospital this week, I'm very happy with that!

Building capacity to increasing the legitimacy of CSOs: a view across the spectrum of self-regulation and accountability

Format: Engagement workshop (1h30)

Summary: If civil society organisations are to be truly effective as a voice for citizens around the world, they need to work hard on standards for continuous improvement of their own governance, as a way to better respond to expectations from citizens, funders, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders who are increasingly expecting demonstrations of good governance and better impact. CSO self-regulation mechanisms are therefore required, but these need to be by and for civil society rather than be imposed by funders or governments.

The three presenters will convey the varying expectations and challenges faced in their three different countries and regions when CSOs decide to embrace self-regulation, and the implication of this in their work with governments at different levels, mass media, social networks, international cooperation agencies and other relevant actors. Imagine Canada will present its newly launched programme of rigorous peer review, which aims at helping CSOs to improve their practice in the areas of board governance, financial transparency and accountability, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement, while responding to the new expectations of society. The Latin American network Rendir Cuentas will present a regional perspective on these issuess.

Today, I went to the gym, even though I really, really, really didn't want to. And then? I ran twice as much as my goal had been to run. After that, I did crunches (which I don't usually do on running days) and lifted weights. And it felt GOOD. Shazam. Take that, out of shape body!

this week, like last week, I ran three times. I'm amazed by how quickly my body is adjusting to running. Last thursday, I couldn't run a mile straight. This week, I almost ran two (and kinda enjoyed it).

[yep. posted on a Thursday again]

Within this collection, you will find photographs documenting July 14th through August 14th, 2023, in the Athens Bar Association where, in addition to endeavoring to ensure that the Court-appointed lawyer for my latest Evelpidon Court case fulfills his obligations, I also sought updates on the progress of my 2019 complaints against two other lawyers associated with the Hellenic Action for Human Rights (H.A.HU.R.).

These complaints were lodged against Electra Leda Koutra and her associate Maria Chartokolli due to their deceitfulness and failure to submit my case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) despite formally having undertaken the task a year earlier in 2018.

Why I Will Never Be A Tourist.

"To be a tourist is to escape accountability. Errors and failings don't cling to you the way they do back home. You're able to drift across the continents and languages, suspending the operation of sound thought. Tourism is the march of stupidity. You're expected to be stupid. The entire mechanism of the host country is geared to travelers acting stupidly. You walk around dazed, squinting into fold-out maps. You don't know how to talk to people, how to get anywhere, what the money means, what time it is, what to eat or how to eat it. Being stupid is the pattern, the level and the norm. You can exist on this level for weeks and months without reprimand or dire consequence. Together with thousands, you are granted immunities and broad freedoms. You are an army of fools, wearing bright polyesters, riding camels, taking pictures of each other, haggard. dysenteric, thirsty. There is nothing to think about but the next shapeless event. --Don DeLillo
