The global economic crisis has turned a harsh spotlight on the role, accountability and transparency of banks and their leadership. In the outside world, public confidence and support is at an all-time low with far-reaching questions about the social utility of banks. On the inside, banks face complex challenges as they adapt to new regulatory environments and seek new ways to function as a profitable motor for the economy.

In this radically different operating landscape, the drive to rethink conventional business models is gathering momentum. This is further accelerated by big data, integrated analytics and new technologies that are transforming how banks and financial services go to market. Innovative renewal is needed if banks are to retain their central place in the payment system.

This session will bring stakeholders from different sectors together to identify options and best practices for a sustainable financial architecture that meets the needs of the economy, shareholders, entrepreneurs and the public.

11 July 2012 - Afghan civil society has demanded an active role in decision making, policy development and monitoring of the policy implementations within the framework of mutual accountability endorsed in the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan earlier this week.

The representatives of Afghan civil society, who attended the International Conference on Afghanistan in Tokyo, addressed a press conference today upon their return to Kabul.

Hayatullah Hayat, the spokesman of the Afghan civil society said that the international community has made funding commitments up to 2024 but these funding is not clear on yearly basis. He demanded from the international community to specify the funding commitments for each year in the lead up to 2024.

“Funding commitments are also not clear for priority sectors such as agriculture, education and health,” said Hayatullah. “Afghan Government should strictly consider issues of human rights and environment protection while awarding contracts to the foreign countries in the mining sector.”

The civil society representatives also demanded from the Afghan government to share with them reports of Financial Management Policy, which has been endorsed for up to December 2012.

Another speaker in the press conference, Ajmal Balochzada said he told that participants of the Tokyo Conference that Afghan government should accelerate its efforts on anti-corruption, anti-terrorism, good governance, human rights, women’s rights and rule of law and the flow of international funding should be linked with progress on these matters.

“In the wake of its past ten-year performance, concerns exist among the international community on the ability of the Afghan Government to have any significant achievement during the coming two years,” said Balochzada.

A total of 30 representatives of the Afghan civil society – 50 per cent of them being women – travelled to Tokyo last week to attend an international conference of civil society in Tokyo on 7 July 2012 and the main international conference a day later.

These representatives were elected earlier in a national gathering of civil society organizations in Kabul to advocate on behalf of civil society organizations and people of Afghanistan on key national issues with the international and national decision makers in Tokyo.

Over 70 Government representatives and international organizations participated in the daylong conference, which agreed to provide US$ 16 billion to meet Afghanistan’s economic and development needs through 2015. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Conference that the UN would extend “strong support” to Afghanistan throughout the Transformation Decade, 2015-2025, while calling on donors to continue to keep the flow of their assistance. The UN chief also called on Afghanistan to play its part according to the Mutual Accountability Framework endorsed by the Conference.

First of all, I have to confess my love for the esoteric wallpaper... why esoteric?... cause i didn't wanna mysterious and make it sound like a cheap magician.

Week 1

Starting Weight: 145

This Week's Change: Down 2 pounds.

I'm trying hard to concentrate on the things my body can do (haul me to the metro, propel me up stairs, assorted schmaltzy things like walk and run, which, when your mother breaks her neck, you start to think about) instead of the things my body cannot do (namely, fit into my clothes from college)

So this victory is especially sweet. I'm down 2 pounds and still about fifteen away from where I want to be, but

1. I have logged 17.4 miles at the gym between January 3 and today.

2. I have not been crazily controlling about what I eat, while generally abstaining from alcohol during the week

3. I am really, really proud of myself. Hell yeah!

Building capacity to increasing the legitimacy of CSOs: a view across the spectrum of self-regulation and accountability

Format: Engagement workshop (1h30)

Summary: If civil society organisations are to be truly effective as a voice for citizens around the world, they need to work hard on standards for continuous improvement of their own governance, as a way to better respond to expectations from citizens, funders, volunteers, staff, and other stakeholders who are increasingly expecting demonstrations of good governance and better impact. CSO self-regulation mechanisms are therefore required, but these need to be by and for civil society rather than be imposed by funders or governments.

The three presenters will convey the varying expectations and challenges faced in their three different countries and regions when CSOs decide to embrace self-regulation, and the implication of this in their work with governments at different levels, mass media, social networks, international cooperation agencies and other relevant actors. Imagine Canada will present its newly launched programme of rigorous peer review, which aims at helping CSOs to improve their practice in the areas of board governance, financial transparency and accountability, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement, while responding to the new expectations of society. The Latin American network Rendir Cuentas will present a regional perspective on these issuess.

This is a failed photo (posted a day late), but it serves its purpose:

One of my goals for 2010 is to challenge myself to accomplish one thing I had always thought was impossible. In light of this, I will be running a 10 mile race in May. I have never run more than 3 miles in my life, and that was when I was significantly better shape. But I like a good challenge, so we'll see how this goes.

Also - I wear completely ridiculous ensembles to the gym when it is cold out. Here I am wearing two pairs of pants and three different tee shirts. I look totally crazy pants.

Two Rallies at the same time. One was the usual Resist Trump Tuesdays which protests the policies and actions of the new president and his administration. The other rally was about establishing a civilian accountability board to oversee the Chicago Police Department.

ACCOUNTABILITY is not about finding a scapegoat when things go wrong. ACCOUNTABILITY is about ownership. We owe our situations and circumstances. We owe our behaviour and our actions. We owe our life. – Sanjeev Himachali
