Once again, these are purple coneflowers taken from our own personal garden. I just love coneflowers! They're so happy, so pretty! My husband planted for two reasons: (1) just because I love coneflowers, and (2) because we wanted to bring more butterflies around! We've gotten some butterflies, so I guess we succeeded! Hope you all enjoy!

This, too, was from today, just a little further north than the last posting. This is also on Sand Lake Road, just above the golf course. The houses weren't real clear, but then I was going for the trees anyway! I could've gotten closer, but seeing as it was a golf course community, some of those roads are only open to residents. Still, all in all, not a bad picture! Another shot of the hills with the golden yellows and rustic browns! Hope you all enjoy!

From Wikipedia:

Elsie Stephen Meighen - born January 22, 1872, Perth, Ontario - and Robert Wilson Reford - born in 1867, Montreal - got married on June 12, 1894.

Elsie Reford was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Québec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens.

Born January 22, 1872 at Perth, Ontario, Elsie Reford was the eldest of three children born to Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. After being educated in Montreal, she was sent to finishing school in Dresden and Paris, returning to Montreal fluent in both German and French, and ready to take her place in society.

She married Robert Wilson Reford on June 12, 1894. She gave birth to two sons, Bruce in 1895 and Eric in 1900. Robert and Elsie Reford were, by many accounts, an ideal couple. In 1902, they built a house on Drummond Street in Montreal. They both loved the outdoors and they spend several weeks a year in a log cabin they built at Lac Caribou, south of Rimouski. In the autumn they hunted for caribou, deer, and ducks. They returned in winter to ski and snowshoe. Elsie Reford also liked to ride. She had learned as a girl and spent many hours riding on the slopes of Mount Royal. And of course, there was salmon-fishing – a sport at which she excelled.

In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.

During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After the war, she was active in the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Montreal Council of Social Agencies, and the National Association of Conservative Women.

In 1925 at the age of 53 years, Elsie Reford was operated for appendicitis and during her convalescence, her doctor counselled against fishing, fearing that she did not have the strength to return to the river.”Why not take up gardening?” he said, thinking this a more suitable pastime for a convalescent woman of a certain age. That is why she began laying out the gardens and supervising their construction. The gardens would take ten years to build, and would extend over more than twenty acres.

Elsie Reford had to overcome many difficulties in bringing her garden to life. First among them were the allergies that sometimes left her bedridden for days on end. The second obstacle was the property itself. Estevan was first and foremost a fishing lodge. The site was chosen because of its proximity to a salmon river and its dramatic views – not for the quality of the soil.

To counter-act nature’s deficiencies, she created soil for each of the plants she had selected, bringing peat and sand from nearby farms. This exchange was fortuitous to the local farmers, suffering through the Great Depression. Then, as now, the gardens provided much-needed work to an area with high unemployment. Elsie Reford’s genius as a gardener was born of the knowledge she developed of the needs of plants. Over the course of her long life, she became an expert plantsman. By the end of her life, Elsie Reford was able to counsel other gardeners, writing in the journals of the Royal Horticultural Society and the North American Lily Society. Elsie Reford was not a landscape architect and had no training of any kind as a garden designer. While she collected and appreciated art, she claimed no talents as an artist.

Elsie Stephen Reford died at her Drummond Street home on November 8, 1967 in her ninety-sixth year.

In 1995, the Reford Gardens ("Jardins de Métis") in Grand-Métis were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, as being an excellent Canadian example of the English-inspired garden.(Wikipedia)

Created by Elsie Reford between 1926 and 1958, these gardens are an inspired example of the English art of the garden. Woven into a natural setting, a series of gardens display perennials, trees and shrubs. A crab-apple orchard, a rock garden, and the Long Walk are also the legacy of this dedicated horticulturist. A microclimate favours the growth of species found nowhere else in Canada, while the stream and winding paths add to the charm. Elsie Reford’s beloved blue poppies and lilies still bloom and contribute, with other exotic and indigenous plants, to the harmony of the site.

This was a tough assignment. When I was a child our Uncle lived with us and he would give me and my siblings a dime every day. I would save it up and at the end of the week we could bring money to school with a passbook and they would deposit our money into a bank account. They would enter the amount in the passbook. Perhaps this is why I am pretty good at saving!

Strijp-S in Eindhoven is a well-known location for many photographers. It is a location that offers many opportunities to take a good photo of someone.

Not only the outdoor locations are very interesting. Strijp-S also has many beautiful atmospheric indoor locations. I take into account that I am present as a customer/visitor, I always order some food or drink and always ask permission to take pictures inside.

unfortunately, something has happened to my facebook account (which I was using to log into my flickr account) so now I cannot access my flickr. I'm hoping that facebook staff will reactivate my account very soon - but that's just not very likely. they are known for taking their sweet time with these kinds of things... so if you don't see me around, you'll know why I've disappeared... and hopefully I'll be back soon.

ECR/DBC 247 029 - Ratingen (D) 26-10-2019.

DB Cargo (former Euro Cargo Rail) 247 029 could also be identified as 266 429 or full UIC number 92 80 1266 429-0 D-DB as it's seen working a loaded pipes train from Oberhausen Osterfeld Süd to Dusseldorf Rath while passing near Ratingen/Lintorf, Germany.

Unfortunately those nice looking sheds can't be seen in the Netherlands as they have licenses to operate in Belgium, France and Germany only. Since 2013 Euro Cargo Rail is a full part of DB Cargo being the owner of these locomotives still fitted in ECR livery with a small DB logo up front on just a few of them.

As every intelligent person knows, Pop Art accounts for three distinct periods.

1. Starving Time. The interesting and fruitful period when a young but already genial artist makes his or her first paintings - the gratest masterpieces of all time. Everything is good but no money to buy some food.

2. Soup Era. This is when a young but already genial artist sells his first piece of great art, or robs a bank (I'm not sure which event has a greater mathematical probability), or just borrows some bucks from a mediocre and worthless person and buys some cans of soup. Of course, the artist documents such a great and rare event (of having canned soup). Many hungry artists follows the father-founder of Pop Art and document their food, drinks, whatever eatable, and personal effects too.

3. After The Lunch. A sated, full-bellied artist doesn't need soup cans for the time being, so he entertains himself right after the lunch, for instance, the way this photo shows. Finally the artist becomes, out of the blue, famous. He has a lot of social commitments now, so he has no free time to make good art. But he is rich now, and that is the Happy End of the story. I wonder if this photo can repeat the success of the artist? What do you think? Feel free to express your opinion in comments.

Jaffa, in Hebrew Yafo (Hebrew: יָפוֹ‎, About this soundYāfō (help·info)) and in Arabic Yafa (Arabic: يَافَا‎) and also called Japho or Joppa, the southern and oldest part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, is an ancient port city in Israel. Jaffa is famous for its association with the biblical stories of Jonah, Solomon and Saint Peter as well as the mythological story of Andromeda and Perseus, and later for its oranges. Jaffa is mentioned in an Ancient Egyptian letter from 1440 BCE. The so-called story of the Taking of Joppa glorifies its conquest by Pharaoh Thutmose III, whose general, Djehuty hid Egyptian soldiers in sacks carried by pack animals and sent them camouflaged as tribute into the Canaanite city, where the soldiers emerged and conquered it. The New Testament account of Saint Peter bringing back to life the widow Dorcas (recorded in Acts of the Apostles, 9:36–42, takes place in Jaffa, then called in Greek Ἰόππη (Latinized as Joppa). Acts 10:10–23 relates that, while Peter was in Jaffa, he had a vision of a large sheet filled with "clean" and "unclean" animals being lowered from heaven, together with a message from the Holy Spirit telling him to accompany several messengers to Cornelius in Caesarea Maritima. Peter retells the story of his vision in Acts 11:4–17, explaining how he had come to preach Christianity to the gentiles.

The Royal Corrington Household Cavalry consists of three regiments of Calvary.

The second of these is the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards; more commonly referred to as the 'Blood Guards' on account of their unusually dark red uniform jackets. Mounted exclusively on large black horses, these troopers have a reputation of stubborn ferocity and bloody ruthlessness. A company of Crimson Guards has just disembarked in Port Woodhouse, the first Household Calvary to be dispatched to the new world. Here they will acclimatise before being deployed to the New Haven Sea theatre for operations against the Lotii.

Some Cavalry troopers I put together for an upcoming MOC. I'm thinking of doing a whole series of small scenes like this depicting different types of Corlander troops.

Legend says that Wild Bill Hickok (real name: James Butler Hickok) was shot in the back of the head during a poker game while holding specific cards, namely the ace of spades, ace of clubs, eight of spades, and eight of clubs and an unknown fifth card and this hand of cards has become known as “the dead man’s hand.”

Although it’s true Hickok was shot and killed that day there is no conclusive evidence what exact cards he was holding at the time of his death were those. To date, no contemporary accounts have been discovered that might reveal what the hand was.

Good story though

you might go mad, too, if you had a computer, but no fingers with which to type. It just drives him crazy at how the world never takes into account the minority who are different from the rest.

Realizing it was already June, and seeing that it was overcast today, I knew it was the perfect time to go shoot some pics at my favorite rose garden! The day was indeed perfect, and I couldn't get enough of these roses they've entitled, "Pure Poetry." This is just the beginning of my posts for today's roses, but I would imagine you will see many more of this particular rose! Hope you enjoy as much as I do!

The X1 route became something of an East Yorkshire Motors Services enclave today with three of their former vehicles in action during the day. In addition to the Merc seen in today's other posting, the Volvo/ALX300 originally registered W408 JAT was also in service, as was - most unusually - Volvo/Plaxton President W11 MPT which was new as YY52 LCK. Deckers are very rarely seen on the route on account of low bridges on the Runcorn Busway but fortunately only peak journeys extend beyond Halton Hospital into the restricted section.

This is St James Street just south of Liverpool city centre.

I went out to try to get a photo of Comet C/2022 E3. We had finally gotten a clear night. I had read a few accounts saying that the comet was visible if you looked in the right spot and it was easily visible with binoculars. So, I went out knowing that I was violating one of the cardinal rules of astrophotography - the moon has to be below the horizon. On this night the moon was up at sunset and was setting at 6:00 a.m. I had a 7:00 a.m. meeting so going in the early morning was out of the question (and that was getting awfully close to sunrise anyway). Besides this, it was very cold about 10 degrees(F) with a light wind. I hadn't used my star tracker for a few months and it turned out that the battery was dead. No problem. I brought a backup battery. But....... the wrong cord. Darn! Have to get pictures without the tracker. Then the compass function on my star phone app wouldn't work. I don't know if that was due to the cold - did I say it was penetratingly cold? After turning the compass off and getting everything oriented to the right direction I got the stars lined up and figured out the right spot to look. Then my camera did something it's never done before. (I think I did say that it was damn cold) It wouldn't leave the menu page if I was using the back screen. OK. I'll just turn the back screen off and use the eye piece. Of course all of this is happening along with the usual frustrations of trying to do photography in the dark - though it wasn't as bad as usual due to that bright nearly full moon.

So, you can easily see the comet with binoculars right? Wrong. Not with a nearly full moon up. Eventually I had to give up when my fingers were too numb to run any of the camera functions or the knobs on the tripod, but I couldn't leave without getting a photo of something. The choice was easy - the dastardly moon that had foiled me in getting any photo at all of the comet.

This plant doesn't have flowers very often, and I really don't mind. Towards the evening it starts smelling quite badly, at least that's what I think. My wife loves the scent. There's no accounting for taste.
