PICTURED: Accelerating action in the race against global boiling
12.00pm – 1.00pm
"Last month was the hottest on record" is a phrase that is becoming increasingly common place on our news
feeds. Indeed, 2023 was a record-breaking year for climate in all the wrong ways. More than 90% of the world's
oceans suffered heatwave conditions and climate scientists around the world have sounded the alarm as the
planet appears to be heating up faster rate than predicted. But what does this mean for communities and
businesses alike who are suffering the impact of destabilising eco-systems? How can their experiences inform our
approach to emission reduction? And, what does this mean for those advocating for the climate agenda on the
front lines?
Join the world's leading authorities on the climate crisis as they set out the startling realties of the current situation.
Learn how businesses who are suffering the consequences of accelerated global warming are adapting their
practises to secure their future and become a part of the solution. And meet the leaders of the communities that
hold unique relationships with the natural world and who might be able to offer us a new way forward.
Key questions to be addressed will include the following:
• How and why are global temperatures are rising faster than anticipated?
• What impact will the rapid rise in temperature have on health ecological systems, the people most
vulnerable to change and the cost to businesses that are ill prepared to face a new order?
• Where have there been ‘wins’ on emissions and what role are corporates playing in decarbonizing at
scale and speed?
• How can the climate community take charge of the situation and accelerate climate action with renewed
ambition?
This session is hosted by Climate Group.

Our first TEDxWestlake explored the accelerating change in the world around us. This change is largely driven by the power of the digital infrastructure built over the last few decades. William Gibson has remarked: “The future is already here – it’s just unevenly distributed.” While we can’t predict the future, we tried to uncover and mine some of these veins.
We were lucky to have speakers from a wide array of disciplines, from kinetic art to philosophy to hybrid social ventures, to come share their stories with our audience of business students and innovators, and help us wonder about what might lie ahead.
