L’Umbracle

As everyone knows, a growth ring marks a year of tree growth. This image suggests that after a tree trunk sprouts a new limb, its growth rings slowly "flow" around the new limb. It is as if a new limb creates "turbulence" that physically diverts the tree's slow, yearly creation of new wood.

Years later, as shown here, we can see the history of this slow process. This becomes possible when the tree is cut down and sawed into things like these planks.

For a “real” Yantra, some elements are missing, e.g. the outwardly closed frame. I apologize for these minor inaccuracies.

Gumbo Limbo Bark

The gumbo-limbo is comically referred to as the tourist tree because the tree's bark is red and peeling, like the skin of sunburnt tourists, who are a common sight in the plant's range.

A glass of water, in fact, but trying to look interesting.

(The bokeh potential of the otherwise rather impressive iPhone 12 camera is, alas, rather limited. So I got some help from a spray of water.)

October 2017.

Eucalyptus bark, beautifully eye-catching with its myriad textures and colours.

I framed this section which to me makes for an appealing natural abstract.

Eucalyptus is a genus of more than 700 species of flowering plants in the family Myrtaceae. Most of the 700 species are native to this country.

All eucalypts add a layer of bark every year and the outermost layer dies. In about half of the species, the dead bark is shed exposing a new layer of fresh, living bark. The dead bark may be shed in large slabs, in ribbons or in small flakes.
