The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways, since 1824.

It is one of several lifeboat services operating in an area.

This is in Scarborough.

Always ready and spic and span!

Le Petit Pêcheur et son chien.

Staithes, North-Yorkshire Heritage Coast... we had combed the beaches, the quay-sides, boats, we'd met new people and chatted, yes taken loads of images.

The tide was coming in fast, the sun was getting lower... we rested out in the shade on a bench, before going for a meal, taking it all in, when this little chap in a bright yellow T-shirt, green net over his shoulder, accompanied by his faithful friend appeared in front of us...

Anywhere you go in the world the same scene you will see, some boys in groups, laughing, joking and a bit loud...

and then: the 'loner', silent and focus-intense, oblivious of the world around him!

The line Ostend-Dover was very busy, one Ferry leaving, one Ferry arriving.

One of the main gateways to Europe!

This is a document now, that service and all the ferries have sadly been scrapped!

For us, to get to Belgium it is HULL>>>>ROTTERDAM in Holland, or driving the 6hours south, DOVER>>>>CALAIS or DUNKIRK in FRANCE.

HELP, I want to get off the island!

SPURN POINT sea defences...

Spurn is a narrow sand tidal island located off the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England that reaches into the North Sea and forms the north bank of the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

It was a spit with a semi-permanent connection to the mainland, but a storm in 2013 made the road down to the end of Spurn impassable to vehicles at high tide.

The island is over 3 miles (5 kilometres) long, almost half the width of the estuary at that point, and as little as 50 yards (46 m) wide in places.

The southernmost tip is known as Spurn Head or Spurn Point and is the home to an RNLI lifeboat station and two disused lighthouses.

Over time, the whole spit, length intact, slips back – with the spit-head remaining on its glacial foundation.

This process has now been affected by the protection of the spit put in place during the Victorian era.

This protection halted the wash-over process and resulted in the spit being even more exposed due to the rest of the coast moving back 110 yards (100 m) since the 'protection' was constructed.

The now crumbling defences will not be replaced and the spit will continue to move westwards at a rate of 2.2 yards (2 m) per year, keeping pace with the coastal erosion further north.

We were there when it was still accessible!

After a job that took us around Hull, we decided to push through to Spurn-point.

Spurn is a very unique place in the British Islands.

It is a nature reserve.

Three and a half miles long and only fifty meters wide in places on the left side of the estuary of the river Humber.

There are a series of sea defence works built by the Victorians and maintained by the Ministry of defence, till they sold Spurn to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in the 1950s.

The defences are in a poor state, breaking down and crumbling, making Spurn a very fragile place wide open to the ravages of the North Sea.

It is a unique place, qua fauna and flora, very protected; there weren't many people on that Good Friday.

This is what is left of the sea defences on the North Sea side, eerie, tragic, but extremely photogenic...

The light was sweet.

Strawberries are at their best in Summer!

The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s via a cross of Fragaria virginiana from eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis, which was brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714.

Cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa have replaced, in commercial production, the woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), which was the first strawberry species cultivated in the early 17th century.

The strawberry is not, from a botanical point of view, a berry.

Technically, it is an aggregate accessory fruit, meaning that the fleshy part is derived not from the plant's ovaries but from the receptacle that holds the ovaries.

Each apparent "seed" (achene) on the outside of the fruit is actually one of the ovaries of the flower, with a seed inside it.

The entire strawberry plant was used to treat depressive illnesses.

In 2017, world production of strawberries was 9.2 million tonnes, led by China with 40% of the total.

The chilli is the fruit of the Capsicum.

Lucia... THE FEST of LIGHT... by magda indigo

On the 13th of December, in Sweden, the festivities of Lucia Day begin early in the morning, with costumed children bringing their parents breakfast in bed. But the holiday continues, with Lucia processions in schools, hospitals, offices, factories, even on flights.

There are also Lucia competitions, with young women vying to represent their community.

Perhaps the most spectacular of these takes place in Stockholm where the city's Lucia is crowned by the writer who three days earlier was awarded that year's Nobel Prize in Literature.

Symbolising the light of faith and the promise of the sun's return,

Santa Lucia has become a Swedish icon of winter, nearly as popular as Jultomte, the Swedish Santa Claus.

The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a 2.22 km (2,430 yd; 7,300 ft; 1.38 mi) single-span road suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981.

When it opened, the bridge was the longest of its type in the world; it was not surpassed until 1998, with the completion of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, and is now the eleventh-longest.

It is still the second-longest span in the Western Hemisphere?

They claim, however I think the Pont de Normandie is now longer?

The bridge spans the Humber (an estuary formed by the rivers Trent and Ouse), between Barton-upon-Humber on the south bank and Hessle on the north bank, connecting the East Riding of Yorkshire with North Lincolnshire.

The bridge can be seen for miles around and from as far as Patrington in the East Riding of Yorkshire and out to sea miles off the coast.

It is a Grade I listed building.

By 2006, the bridge carried an average of 120,000 vehicles per week.

We find fields of pink tulips, they are not cutting-flowers, too open, that means they grow these for the bulbs.

yes, the were first Parrot Tulips of the season.

The petals shimmered like silk, unreal, but they are fresh!

The closer you look, the more you discover.

Their textures are so interesting and intricate, a joy for my eyes.

Never had them in this colour before, new varieties all the time.

A strong and healthy flower.

Love them or hate them, Parrot Tulips are Spring's grand (bulb) showcase, big and beautiful, they are flamboyant flowers with streaks, ruffles and frayed edges.

The station of Pickering, North-Yorkshire...

I ran alongside, as the steam train was leaving the station... photographing on the run...it made the driver smile,

Most of the passengers may not realise how reliant upon volunteers the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is.

With the magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time.

From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic.

It’s also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you’re travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby.

You know by now that I am a 'purist? Prefer proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION!

Lots of dust, fluff, reels, looms, bobbins, machines, threads...

Sadly this family business was going to close down, the three remaining brothers, none of their children were going to take it over, because of the advanced technology nowadays, the machines were getting older and would cost a lot to replace.

What a shame, these guys grew up with it and are so passionate about what they do! Sad.

Deep inside the machine, where the magic happens, from thread to material.

We visit a weavery for a shoot, specialised in linen and linen-velours.

It is a known fact that flax used to be grown in the Kortrijk area, where the river Leie runs.

It is a food and fiber crop cultivated in cooler regions of the world.

The textiles made from flax are known as linen and traditionally used for bed sheets, underclothes, and table linen.

In this factory here, the treads come in on massive reels and get woven into beautiful linen cloth and velvet.

Natural in colour.

Later dyed in vibrant colours.

My youngest son, from when he was a little boy had a huge interest in trucks, when I came back from the States and Canada, I always knew what to bring him, magazines on those monster trucks, beautifully painted and maintained, the centrefolds all ended up on his bedroom walls.

He studied, had a very good job, when he called me to say he was taking all the exams that would fullfil his dream. He quit the job and became a truck driver! For a number of years he drove International and mostly Arctic.

One of his routes was the UK, he’d call me out of the blue, I’d pack and go, once we did 6 countries in one go, England/Belgium/Holland/Germany/Denmark/Sweden. Let’s not glamourize it, it’s not the scenic beauty of the countries that you take in, but motorway, not the most exciting, it is monotonous, you fly past all the wonderful names, and if you’re lucky sometimes you’ll see a glimmer in the distance.

It’s tough, stressful, under constant time pressure. The truck becomes your home for a week, except for the ferry crossings (on ferries they have their own quarters, restaurants, relaxing areas and sleeping cabins with shower, you'd BETTER be QUIET in those passages!

We had some wonderful times and adventures, great memories, lots of stories, all written....

Now he is married, they have a little girl. He’s given up THE life…

He drives a huge Mercedes with a trailer=a deep-loader to transport very heavy loads, like huge cranes and giant bulldozers.

This is the highest truck I was ever in, very comfortable, especially for the driver, a special hydraulic seat, airco, great music and communication console.

All the mirrors are NOT luxury or bling!

They have to be in constant contact with base, because things change often by the minute.

I'll always be grateful for our 'trips' together, they were great times, he is a very responsible driver and I am proud of him!.

I discovered a 'hidden' world, around service stations, ports, parkings, we fly past them, but they are there... waiting, eating, resting, sleeping, doing their paper-work, looking up routes and addresses, phoning home... Everything in our world at some point was hauled in one of those trucks by one of those people!

They work hard for a living, but it’s a world within ours, almost a community.

And it is NOT glamorous at all, often boring, motorways in countries are all pretty much the same!

Look around you, in your home, anywhere, think of your food… what, at some point in time was not on the road, being transported in a truck?

Safety conscious! Along the coast of the treacherous North-Sea.

For the people who were nit properly taught about the dangers of the sea, and they take liberties, throwing caution to the wind!

A whole industry, for boat, yacht, ship, harbour and ALL the people that have anything to do with it!

I also realised, that my subconscious reads most of them!

No wonder I am tired when I come home! LOL.

Now I know why...

Some are more obscure than others!

I often annoy people, walking the streets, when I slalom between them, haha.

We go out and take the stairs up to the upper Chapel, actually a minor Basilica.

Legend has it that after the Crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathea wiped blood from the body of Christ and preserved the cloth.

The relic remained in the Holy Land until the Second Crusade, when the King of Jerusalem Baldwin III gave it to his brother-in-law, Count of Flanders Diederik van den Elzas.

The count arrived with it in Bruges on April 7, 1150 and placed it in a chapel he had built on Burg Square.

The upper chapel was originally Romanesque as well, but is now Gothic with mostly modern decoration.

It is lit by stained glass windows and covered with murals, including a brightly painted altar backdrop depicting the Trinity and scenes relating to the Holy Blood relic.

The pulpit in the form of a globe dates was made in 1728 by Henry Pulinckx.

Religious or not, a must see when visiting this old city

When I look for utensils for my kitchen, I try to look for non-plastic, but that is a no-go!

They only sell it in plastic or silicon.

And most are made so very attractive?

So, as long as they make it in synthetic, and so attractive, THAT is what people will buy and use?

It starts at the origin to NOT make it any more and look for other materials?

I do NOT mind wood or metal.
