On Yorkshire Moors, up the Pennines, The Saddleworth Brass Band Festival takes place on the Friday following the Whitsuntide bank holiday each year.

Delph is one of several villages visited by competing bands from across the country.

It is a very festive occasion!

A good day for the pubs (~:*) and 'fast-food sellers'...

It was already close to 'darkness', they had been playing and parading for quite some time, a thirsty business, it was starting to show!

It is a well-known fact that England is a land of traditions and proudly so!

Due to the faster pace and changes in the current times, many are finding it harder to keep going.

Society is changing more rapidly than ever.

Aconitum, commonly known as aconite, monkshood, wolf's bane, leopard's bane, mouse-bane, women's bane, devil's helmet, queen of poisons, or blue rocket.

It is a genus of over 250 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae.

These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly native to the mountainous parts of the Northern Hemisphere, growing in the moisture-retentive but well-draining soils of mountain meadows.

Most species are extremely poisonous and must be dealt with carefully.

The tall, erect stem is crowned by racemes of large blue, purple, white, yellow, or pink zygomorphic flowers with numerous stamens.

They are distinguishable by having one of the five petaloid sepals (the posterior one), called the galea, in the form of a cylindrical helmet, hence the English name monkshood, and in Flemish: monnikskap.

For me, no matter how many sunsets... each one different and fresh and rich and more spectacular than the previous one, a miracle to my eyes each time.

Dusk is probably my favourite time, to reflect back on the day and look forward to the evening , the next day, the next sunset... and such, life passes...

This is again taken from the terrace of the penthouse we used to live in, one side overlooking the sea, the other the town.

Even after a full day’s work I would very much relax with a glass of Chardonnay and my camera, looking at the sea-traffic and ultimately the sunset.

This is one of them.

Different? I'll let you be the judge of that.

We are back and on the hunt for images.

He pushed off again, his eyes were closed, I noticed he did that a lot, like up-calling the images? LOL

Gently sprinkled with pollen...

These are a beautiful soft purple.

The waiting buds only just peeping out.

Summer was slowly leaving us in a flurry of colour.

Named for the shape of their leaves, like blades, gladioli – from the Latin word “gladius,” meaning sword – have a history that spans from Africa to the Mediterranean.

Symbolising strength and moral integrity, gladioli also represent infatuation, with a bouquet conveying to a recipient that they pierce the giver’s heart with passion. How romantic!

Nuts, onion, Asparagus, Cobnuts, and A FRENCH AFFAIR! GARLIC ...

During our visit to the Continent, we drove through part of Northern France, we made a stop in St Omer, often the first stop inland for many visitors to France, a quiet, unassuming and attractive little town, 43km southeast of Calais.

We wanted to stretch our legs. Walked through the lovely shopping-streets with some beautiful old houses and got to the market square.

On the corner, we saw the most attractive fruit and veg shop, everything looking very fresh.

I saw plaits of fresh garlic... I chose one, walked inside to pay for it when I saw the cheese-counter, full of 'spécialitées de la région'...

I bought some of that too...

Although the garlic was wrapped in TWO bags, as was the cheese, and in the boot we had a zipped up 'cooling-bag' in which we stored our purchases...

From then on, each time we got into our car, we were greeted and treated by the pungent mixture of the combined 'fragrances!!!

What a laugh!

The cheese was delicious, the garlic... ahem, beautiful? (the guys in the studio weren't so impressed!)

Hanami (花見, "flower viewing") is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers; flowers ("hana") are in this case almost always referring to those of the cherry ("sakura") or, less frequently, plum ("ume") trees.

...Amongst all the opulence, on the grass carpet, you could see that unfortunately people do not experience beauty in the same way, there were blossoms thrown all over the place, I saw two youngsters driving their bikes with their arms up, hitting every branch they could reach, leaving a trail of pink, they had fun...

I don't judge them, remember my own youth, we've all done silly stuff that now, but never anything like this, nothing destructive.

When you look or think back... you shake your head in disbelief... and sigh: why?

Because you are that age???

A broken off branch was left to wilt, I rescued it, it's adorning our dining room table now... not before I had photographed it in the studio, lol.

Whereas in China the cherry blossom symbolises feminine beauty, the feminine principle, or love in the language of herbs, in Japan the cherry blossoms are believed to exemplify the transient nature of life, because of their short blooming times.

Cherry blossoms also symbolise clouds due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.

we were in Holland, and it was bitterly cold.

The wind was rushing over the flat meadows and tearing at my clothes and skin.

I walked along one of the many small canals, many were frozen along the grassy banks.

The rushing water was still half ice over the midday.

The banks had grasses and sticks encapsulated ice, made a wonderful spectacle.

Some scholars believe that the name "carnation" comes from "coronation" or "corone" (flower garlands), as it was one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns.

Carnations are often worn on special occasions, especially at weddings.

At the turn of the century dandies would not leave the house without a white or red carnation in the buttonhole of their suit.

With the end of this tradition and the fact that carnations are so easily cultivated and grown, the flower has lost some of its popularity.

Although apparently in the UK it is still the most sold flower…

However, carnations are not only beautiful and long lasting flowers, they also send a message.

When you receive a red carnation bouquet, it means, "My heart aches for you" and when you receive white carnations the sender is saying: "I am still available."

For the most part, carnations express love, fascination, and distinction.

I wanted a bit of drama here and lots of detail in those 'feathered' beauties...

A water candle holder, safe and magic, it reflects and refracts the light beautifully and in unexpected ways.

When I poured in the water, it formed bubbles which delighted me!

Glass is one of the most difficult substances to photograph; my challenge is to use the reflections in a positive manner so that they add to the image.

DANGEROUS SUMMER GAMES...

Thornwick, on the beautiful North-Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

Thornwick Bay is located next to Flamborough .

A headland and magnificent cliffs with two bays of shingle, pebbles and flint.

The large bay is Thornwick Bay and the small one, Little Thornwick Bay.

Limestone rocks and cliffs, fretted by the sea, small beaches and plenty of mysterious caves.

Many come the see it from the sea in all sorts, here a group of colourful vessels, people rowing together, their voices tinged with joy resonating amongst the heights.

The youngsters, on the top were engaged in a much more dangerous game... diving off the cliff.

Maritime Access has built a new maritime port for the twenty-first century in the port of Ostend.

The strategic plan for the port has improved accessibility and better protects the city of Ostend against flooding.

The two new breakwaters were designed in such a way that they could withstand a storm that statistically attacks our coast once every 1000 years.

I witnessed one in 1953!

The new eastern breakwater, which runs 600 meters far into the sea, marks the new port entrance together with the western dam.

Plenty of benches, great different views created of beach and city, a treat!

Brand new, a popular place now, for walkers, cyclists, fishermen and euh, well, sea-lovers?

I love the 'minimalism again, how did I manage that? Patience, LOL,...

The musicians from THE CAPE have a specific and unique sound.

They are very happy people.

More at the V&A Docks, harbour of Cape Town offer all kinds of entertainment.

Old and young, different instruments some more traditional than others, they play their tunes.

The ones in the red T-shirts play on the xylophone, they are made out of wood (greek:XYLOS).

You also have the vibraphone, they are in metal.

Some youngster even dress up.

All very colourful.

A flooded tidal cause-way in Cornwall, from the main land to St Michaels' Mount.

Fog in Scarborough, creates an illusion.

I love trees in ALL seasons, here they are skeletal.

It is early October and we are in Scotland, so the weather is ‘Scottish’… which means, some sun, racing clouds, fast showers, lots of light play on the hills and oooh interesting light.

As we are high up, we are closer to the sky, so; often the top of the hills are covered in eerie wisps of white cloud.

Like a lover’s caress.

The weather doesn’t bother us, we take it as it comes, everything has its charms and moods.

When in The Highlands, you just have to see it with mist and rain.

We stand on the shore of Loch Lubnaig, standing silent, stunned by such beauty, which changes by the second! I capture the rain.

The same in Yorkshire, with the many Majestic old trees

ONE IN FLANDERS... Guess?

This is again how it came out of my camera!

We don't like them in our gardens.

AND YET: The dandelion plant is a beneficial weed, with a wide range of uses, and is even a good companion plant for gardening.

Its taproot will bring up nutrients for shallower-rooting plants, and add minerals and nitrogen to soil.

It is also known to attract pollinating insects and release ethylene gas which helps fruit to ripen.

Taraxacum seeds are an important food source for certain birds

Models having fun?

Look, it is not all plain sailing, what YOU get is the final result after hours spent 'perfecting' the image.

Mistakes are made, things go wrong, with the props, the set-up.

Reflectors fall over as do flowers, or the whole thing shifts, haha.

It is a matter of keeping calm or seeing the fun in what happened, like this here!

The climb to the abbey is hard and, it is hot -- by the time you have mounted the celebrated Escalier de Dentelle (Lace Staircase) to the gallery around the roof of the abbey church, you will have climbed no fewer than 900 steps -- but it's worth it…

Perched on a 264 feet high rock formation sits Mont St. Michel.

The original site was founded by an Irish hermit, who gathered a following from the local community.

During the seasons' highest tides the abbey is surrounded by water.

During low tide the flats provide food for the world's only herd of salt water plant eating sheep (Les agneaux des prés salés), the meat tastes salty.

Mont St. Michel's tides can rush in at incredible speeds.

The tides in the area shift quickly, and has been described by Victor Hugo as ‡ la vitesse d'un cheval au galop, "as swiftly as a galloping horse."

The tide actually comes in at 1 meter per second.

Popularly nicknamed "St. Michael in Peril of the Sea" by medieval pilgrims making their way across the tidal flats, the mount can still pose dangers for visitors who avoid the causeway and attempt the hazardous walk across the sands from the neighbouring coast.

The dangers from the tides and quick sands continue to claim lives.

Mont Saint Michel is a small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River in Normandy.

The mount is best known for the medieval Benedictine Abbey and steepled church that occupies most of the 1km-diameter clump of rocks jutting out of the waters of the English Channel.

One of the few crops grown on Fuerteventura is Aloe Vera.

Aloe is a genus containing about four hundred species of flowering succulent plants that grow in subtropical climates, they vary in colour from grey to bright green and are sometimes striped or mottled..

The plants grow until they are 2 to 3 years old and then they are processed so that the extracts can be added to a range of Aloe Vera pro

The aloe vera flowers, leaves and other parts of plants that we use to make our high-quality organic care products come primarily from the Canary Islands: the sunny, warm climate combined with the fertile volcanic soil ensures that the plants contain many valuable ingredients deposit their cells.

Coming back from the South of France.

We take a nice break in Beaune, Bourgogne/Burgundy.

We have an overnight stay, and at last, later in the evening, the temperature drops.

Time to take a nice walk and experience this old city at night, still lots of people, the terraces filled with happiness and laughter.

Our hotel is a very old house named La maison du Colombier: meaning building in the shape of a round or square tower, where pigeons are housed and fed.

A dovecote. LOL, and it is!

The other lights are the restaurant were we dined.

Wherever I went, I used to have my 2 Nikons F4 one loaded with colour-film, the other with Mono film

(Now replaced by Nikon D7200, which I still try to use as much as possible like a FILM camera)

Very often I had my second camera (another F4) ready with a gritty 400 asa black and white film.

Digis don't have that problem, he?

Here in Crete I had this secret goal to capture the people, those interesting faces, I wanted to make some great portraits.

In the small mountain village of Prina, where time has stood still, my dream came true.

A group of people sat in the square, in the shade, chatting and laughing.

They have known real hardship, it shows, but there is great kindness and generosity.

It was Vesper's time.

The tinny bell sang invitingly.

The friends around them moved out of the way

They allowed me to photograph them, her son and husband next to her, I first used the camera at hand (colour) to put them at ease (I thought), but to the Cretans a ‘portrait’ is always very serious... then I took the rest...

I understood Ansel Adams, the lengths he went to, what he felt when he saw his subjects, the textures and ALL those wonderful grey-tones.

The faces wrinkled by too much sun?

A magic moment, the lady so beautiful and lovely.

Later, for Getty, I needed a model release... she could barely write and did not know her year of birth!
