I was just standing, enjoying the quick change of light, the great beauty and then… I saw this, a MUST take image, so in harmony with my soul.

PHYSALIS alkekengi or Chinese Lantern Plant, they are native from southern Europe east across southern Asia to Japan.

Popular for the papery bright-orange lantern pods that develop around the ripening fruit, these are often cut and used for Thanksgiving and Halloween arrangements.

Plants are aggressive spreaders, and best kept out of the perennial border so they don't take over.

Also can be grown in tubs.

Small white flowers appear in midsummer, over a bushy mound of coarse green leaves.

Pods are green at first, but should be harvested as soon as the orange colour develops, the leaves stripped then stems hung upside down to dry in a warm dark room.

Tulips, which first appeared in France, found their way to the Netherlands in the Eighteenth century, where they were highly prized and extremely expensive.

They came in many beautiful colours, here a ’softer’ variety.

All the vibrant colours are so very attractive and all together, they also work.

However here I selected just yellow ones, fitting for Easter and Spring...

The viola is a large family containing 500 species, they are on record in Greece from the 4th century B.C.

Later in Europe, it was discovered that a plant similar to a viola grew in open areas.

The plant found mostly in fields and amongst rocks in the Alps, hence Alpine.

It became known as a wild pansy (French: pensée). It might have been a romantic Frenchman who 'named' it...

A pensée can be a thought or a saying, short or it can be as long as a paragraph, a page, a poem!

Maybe he thought of his loved-one, dried one amongst some book he carried? Juste une pensée... lol.

These delicately fragrant flowers come in a wonderful variety of colours.

The dark centres in some flowers are thought to resemble little faces.

These are a smaller variety that I have in the garden, I could not resist photographing them in the studio...

March, still cold, with hard rain and often stormy winds... interjected by a few sunny days full of hope and promise.

Slowly you see the earth come to life again, the grass turns greener and dashes of colour appear.

Our thick clothing replaced by more vibrant fabrics, boots discarded for daintier shoes.

We begin to feel 'lighter'?

We start to dream of summer, lol.

Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William).

It is the wild ancestor of the garden Carnation, very fragrant...

In the Victorian language of flowers, Sweet William symbolises gallantry.

Light red carnations represent admiration, while dark red denote deep love and affection.

Purple carnations indicate capriciousness. In France, it is a traditional funeral flower, given in condolence for the death of a loved one.

In France and Francophone cultures, carnations symbolise misfortune and bad luck.

Purple is a colour intermediate between blue and red.

It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral colour with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a composite colour made by combining red and blue.

According to surveys in Europe and the U.S., purple is the colour most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery, and piety.

When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.

Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops.

Similarly in Japan, the colour is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.

The deep, rich purple dye made from a sea snail called the spiny dye-murex became known as Tyrian purple.

The process of making the dye was long, difficult and expensive.

Thousands of the tiny snails had to be found, their shells cracked, the snail removed.

Mountains of empty shells have been found at the ancient sites of Sidon and Tyre.

The snails were left to soak, then a tiny gland was removed and the juice extracted and put in a basin, which was placed in the sunlight.

There a remarkable transformation took place.

In the sunlight the juice turned white, then yellow-green, then green, then violet, then a red which turned darker and darker.

The process had to be stopped at exactly the right time to obtain the desired colour, which could range from a bright crimson to a dark purple.

Then either wool, linen or silk would be dyed. The exact hue varied, but it was always rich, bright and lasting.

Purple, represented royally by this proud Anemone.

From my travels, I am not one to bring home your usual souvenir, I rather have something that I will have for usage.

From Copenhagen, I bought a handy design herb/spice rack

From Kyoto, Japan, all I brought was this, from the MOMA shop just on the corner from where our hotel was.

I thought first it was a scarf, folded up in a pleated white box.

It said in Japanese characters what it was, but, never mind I had been seduced, it was too late, I bought it, and brought it home.

To my amazement, when I opened my treasure... it was NOT a scarf but a.... Japanese Tote bag!

I love them, they last at least 2 weeks in a vase. Beauties.

Alstroemeria, the genus named after the Swedish baron Alströmer who brought them back from a trip to South America in 1753.

Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants.

Almost all of the species are restricted to one of two distinct centers of diversity, one in central Chile, the other in eastern Brazil.

Species of Alstroemeria from the Atacama Desert of Chile are winter-growing plants while those of Brazil are summer-growing.

The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade.

They have a vase life of about two weeks.

THE SINGING RINGING TREE... by magda indigo

So we had a Bank-holiday here, the weather was reasonable as was the light.

We decided to go on a Busman's holiday (A vacation during which one engages in activity that is similar to one's usual work.) LOL!

We drove towards the West Coast, into Lancashire, towards Manchester and Liverpool.

We had heard about The Singing Ringing Tree, part of The Panopticons, a visionary scheme to create a unique series of 21st century landmarks across East Lancashire, as symbols of the renaissance of the area.

The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered musical sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine mountain range overlooking Burnley.

This musical element is created by the wind whistling through its 'branches', which are in fact galvanised steel pipes carefully tuned to ensure that the tree sings in harmonyEventually we found it, wanted the 'later light' anyway...

There was not that much wind, but now and than we did hear the haunting sounds:

Completed in 2006, it is part of the series of four sculptures within the Panopticons arts and regeneration project created by the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network (ELEAN).

The project was set up to erect a series of 21st-century landmarks, or Panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive view), across East Lancashire as symbols of the renaissance of the area.

Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the Singing Ringing Tree is a 3 metre tall construction comprising pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves.

Some of the pipes are primarily structural and aesthetic elements, while others have been cut across their width enabling the sound.

The harmonic and singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each.

We plan to 'find/visit' all of them sometime,.

MUSCARI BLUES… by magda indigo

Muscari is a genus of perennial bulbous plants native to Eurasia that produce spikes of dense, most commonly blue, urn-shaped flowers resembling bunches of grapes in the spring.

This lovely blue is so very cheerful in the winter-awakening garden, THIS IS THE TRUE BLUE OF THESE TINY LITTLE FLOWERS!

The common name for the genus is Grape Hyacinth, the name Muscari comes from the Greek muschos, musk, referring to the scent.

Perched on a 264 feet high rock formation sits Mont St. Michel. During the seasons' highest tides the abbey is surrounded by water.

During low tide the flats provide food for the world's only herd of salt water plant eating sheep (Les agneaux des prés salés), the meat tastes salty.

Mont St. Michel's tides can rush in at incredible speeds.The tides in the area shift quickly, and has been described by Victor Hugo as ‡ la vitesse d'un cheval au galop, "as swiftly as a galloping horse."

The tide actually comes in at 1 meter per second.

Popularly nicknamed "St. Michael in Peril of the Sea" by medieval pilgrims making their way across the tidal flats, the mount can still pose dangers for visitors who avoid the causeway and attempt the hazardous walk across the sands from the neighbouring coast.

The dangers from the tides and quick sands continue to claim lives.

Mont Saint Michel is a small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River in Normandy.

The mount is best known for the medieval Benedictine Abbey and steepled church that occupies most of the 1km-diameter clump of rocks jutting out of the waters of the English Channel.

An Autumn Sunday in North-Wales.

Little winding roads amongst the golden larches, up towards Mount Snowdon, this river surprised me with its golden and indigo colours, the limpid water ice cold and wild.

Wales, with its dramatic scenery, is steeped in mystery and romance.

Its majestic heather-clad hills cut by cascading waterfalls, and mountain streams rushing through gladed valleys are both the places of legends and of history running back into the mists of time.

Yet, beneath the quartzite surface of this jewelled landscape, there is another treasure, as valuable as it is beautiful – Welsh gold.

Today, Welsh gold is scarcer than it has ever been. When mining took place at the Clogau St. David’s Gold Mine in the late 1990s it used to cost over £1000 an ounce to extract.

Look at that golden hand, maybe a giant fell?

Isn't imagination a wonderful gift?

I used recycled pencils for this image. I cannot resist the, spotted a funky rubber to go with them, made the composition in my head, right there!

So colourful and attractive? The child in me. I still LOVE to write in pencil, it brings out my best handwriting!

I am such a softy... it always pulls my heartstrings when I see animals out in Winter… and in snow…

Of course, they have a thick warm coat, but still… Of course there was shelter and lots of food... yet they chose to be in the snow.... like me haha.

When the grass is green the sheep look white but when the snow covers the ground, the sheep look anything but.

These were eating from a well stocked manger under the canopy of a massive tree.

And then, there is the unmissable black sheep in the family!

Sheep in the Yorkshire Dales, inquisitive, skittish and loud!

Our dog, Pica LOVED the snow.

HYDRANGEA from THE GARDEN...

Not all from my garden, most from my travels.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

In most species the flowers are white, but in some species (notably H. macrophylla), they are blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple.

In these species the colour is affected by the presence of aluminium ions which are available or tied up depending upon the soil’s pH content.

For H. macrophylla and H. serrata cultivars, the flower colour can be determined by the relative acidity of the soil: an acidic soil (pH below 7), will have available aluminium ions and typically produce flowers that are blue to purple, whereas an alkaline soil (pH above 7) will tie up aluminium ions and result in pink or red flowers.

I LOVE THE SEA!!!

Under ALL circumstances, whether wild or calm...

What power here, SPECTACULAR, thunderingly beautiful and somehow frightening!

I grew up by and with the sea and NEVER underestimate it!

This here is Paul at that most Southern point of the Cape, still the Atlantic Ocean.

The Cape of Good Hope (Afrikaans: Kaap die Goeie Hoop, Dutch: Kaap de Goede Hoop), is a rocky headland on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa.

The MOST Southern tip of THE CAPE.

A common misconception is that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa.

This misconception was based on the misbelief that the Cape was the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Contemporary geographic knowledge instead states the southernmost point of Africa is Cape Agulhas about 150 kilometres (90 mi) to the east-southeast.

The currents of the two oceans meet at the point where the warm-water Agulhas current meets the cold-water Benguela current and turns back on itself.

That oceanic meeting point fluctuates between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point (about 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) east of the Cape of Good Hope).

"Cape of Good Hope" named thus because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of a sea route to India and the East.

FIRST SIGNS of AUTUMN…

BRUGGE. Alongside the canal, still warm in the late-Summer sun I spot the first sign of Autumn on one of the old historic walls on the Groenerei.

A Virginia Creeper (parthenocissus) clinging on very elegantly.

Brugge will be so beautiful in full Autumn dress!

Cascading gold, the petals of a Gerbera.

Gerbera is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family.

It was named in honour of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black.

It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip).

Feathers insulate birds from water and cold temperatures.

They may also be plucked to line the nest and provide insulation to the eggs and young.

The individual feathers in the wings and tail play important roles in controlling flight.

Some species have a crest of feathers on their heads. Although feathers are light, a bird's plumage weighs two or three times more than its skeleton, since many bones are hollow and contain air sacs.

Colour patterns serve as camouflage against predators for birds in their habitats.

Striking differences in feather patterns and colours are part of the sexual dimorphism of many bird species and are particularly important in selection of mating pairs.

A good alternative for flowers, if you want colour, shapes and textures, is feathers.

I had a lot of fun with these, always trying to ‘perfection’ and bring the best.

I love Ranunculus, the blooms opened beautifully, not always evident, their stems are extremely delicate and do tend to just collapse before the bud can open into a gorgeous voluptuous bloom...

So tightly petalled and ruffled!

For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light?

Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL.

Mysterious she stands.

Was a meeting and greeting point and a big attraction.

Group of statues at fountain: in all, there are four groups of statues: ‘The Bathing Ladies’ (symbolising the Flemish cities of Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Kortrijk), ‘Flemish Landscape’, ‘The Fishermen’, referring to the link between Bruges and the sea) and ‘The Cyclists’.

Created in 1985-86 by the artistic couple, Stefaan Depuydt and Livia Canestraro.

A small price to pay?

I have never been depressed in my life!

The pear is native to coastal and mildly temperate regions of the Old World, from western Europe and north Africa east right across Asia.

It is a medium-sized tree, reaching 10–17 m tall, often with a tall, narrow crown.

Most pears are deciduous, but one or two species in southeast Asia are evergreen.

Most are cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures between −25 °C and −40 °C in winter, except for the evergreen species, which only tolerate temperatures down to about −15 °C.

The blossom flowers are white, rarely tinted yellow or pink, 2–4 cm diameter, and have five petals.

Like that of the related apple, the pear fruit is a pome, in most wild species 1–4 cm diameter, but in some cultivated forms up to 18 cm long and 8 cm broad; the shape varies in most species from oblate or globose, to the classic pyriform 'pear-shape' of the European pear with an elongated basal portion and a bulbous end.

These were happy to be together.

When I do food shots I NEVER tamper with it... too many go hungry.

We eat our props! LOL.

I know that for the glossies and ads they have to do it, like using butter (coloured) for ice-cream because of the melting factor, the use of hair lacquer, vaseline... etc

Characteristics: This pear is easy to identify due to its small size, an oval shape, smooth skin, and striking yellowish-green freckled skin, which turns a beautiful red as it ripens. Sweet and delicate,

Forelles are an old European variety.

Pears are healthy I just read for many reasons!

High up the Yorkshire Moors, there is little else but sheep, ewes with their lambs.

A massive sign of Spring.

It is definitely NOT silent, the little ones keep losing mum, and mum keeps calling them.

Often they seem lost in this epic landscape.

I know it is traditional to eat lamb around Easter, but, really, how can they?

I mean when you see the little ones frolicking in the fields? AAAWWW

A windy day in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

Sources refer to it as the "Brighton beach chair" or "chaise transatlantique" ("chaise transat").

A deckchair (or deck chair) is a folding chair, usually with a frame of treated wood or other material.

In Northern Europe, the remains of folding chairs have been found dating back to the Bronze Age.

Foldable chairs were also used in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. During the Middle Ages, the folding chair was widely used as a liturgical furniture piece.

The Titanic carried 600 such wooden chairs; six were known to survive, of which one was sold in 2001 for £35,000.

The hiring out of deckchairs, on an hourly or daily basis, became established in British seaside resorts, often for use on piers and promenades, in the early 20th century.

They were also often used in large public parks such as Hyde Park, and for spectators at informal sporting events such as local cricket matches.

In one of the largest English resorts, Blackpool, 68,000 deckchairs were rented out in 2003, at £1.50 a day, but tourism officers suggested that they should be phased out, except on the piers themselves, because they were a reminder of the era of "cloth caps", and had "had their time in the 50s and 60s".

In Ostend, on the Belgian coast, where I grew up, you can still rent them...
