Avignon, France.
Today Avignon is a city with an urban area of 450,000 located on the Rhône River is southern France. It has an ancient core, surviving medieval defensive walls, and is best known as the "city of the Popes". The papal residence was moved to Avignon in 1305 and returned to Rome in 1376. The prominent structure in the city is the huge Pope's Palace, which together with the Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms (Avignon Cathedral), dominate the ancient core surrounded by the medieval walls.
This impressive medieval wall surrounded the old part of Avignon was built by the Avignon Popes in the 14th century.
