The "Gray Penitents" were the first of a long series of penitents from Avignon. The “Black Penitents”, which were founded in 1488 by a group of Florentine nobles, and the “White Penitents”, a brotherhood founded in 1527 by thirteen people from Avignon, are then known in particular.
After the siege of Avignon in 1226, the King of France came to pray here. There he founded the Royal Brotherhood of Gray Penitents. The latter then built a chapel in this place. The very traditional monks had as their mission the adoration of the holy sacrament, permanently exposed in the sanctuary.
