Travel photography from Avignon, France - March 2012. Part of my month long trip touring southern Europe via railways in the spring of 2012.

Here's my view out over Avignon from the Rocher des Doms garden -- with the sounds of little kids playing and feeding the ducks in the background. I sat up on the wall here, basking in the sun and writing in my journal, for about a half-hour, enjoying the scene. The skies were uniformly hazy the entire time we were in France -- lots of woodsmoke, I think, as something ALWAYS seemed to be burning on the horizon -- & sometimes it made for crappy photography, but here it looks kind of nice.
Avignon seems to have several street artists who have decorated its walls or condemned windows. Here are just two examples of the many works we admired on the walls of the old city.

Avignon is the home of the Palais des Papes, a Gothic palace begun in 1252 CE and the home of the popes of the RC Church from 1309 to 1377 when the papacy returned to Rome. It's the largest Gothic palace in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's an amazing place and much of it is not as ornate and lavish as you might expect. The two bottom, center photos were taken of the area in front of the palace.
