Oftenly known as the City of Popes when the seat of papacy resided in Avignon from 1309 to 1377. At the beginning of the 14th century, this was a town of no great importance, but gradually underwent extensive development during the time of the seven Avignon popes and two anti-popes, from Clement V to Benedict XIII.

Great blue skies during this late winter period of February.

Par une belle fin de journée sans nuage, une pause longue sur le pont d'Avignon à l'heure bleue.

Château d'Avignon

Throughout the 18th century, the Avignon family gradually develops an estate of high yield farmland by creating irrigation channels from the Petite Rhône. In 1893, Louis Prat-Noilly (1845 – 1932), a wealthy wine merchant from Marseille, buys the property, converts the castle into a hunting lodge and has it extended and sumptuoustly decorated; he creates a park and planted with rare tree species.

Being a man with a keen interest in the innovations of his time, he includes all the latest techniques in the refurbishing of the castle. The Conseil Général des Bouches-du-Rhône invited us to visit this singular property which is a testomony to the expensive tastes and modernity of the industial upper middle class at the dawn of the 20th century.

At the time of our visit, several artists have displayed their perfromances and/or installation on site, throughout the parc and chateau:

Bertille Bak / Dominique Blais / Pierre-Laurent Cassière / Marie Chéné et Pascal Messaoudi / François Cys / Bertrand Gadenne / Gethan& Myles / Laurent Gongora / Mathias Isouard / Grégoire Lauvin & Peter Sinclair / Thierry Mouillé / Emmanuel Rivière

Avignon, France after the rain. We took one of these trams to see some of the sights around town. In the older parts of town some of the "streets" or alleys are so twisty and narrow with high walls on both sides that the tram could barely clear them. In places you could reach out from either side and easily touch the walls. I was amazed that the cars weren't all banged up. The drivers have to be good and the cars have to be designed well to get around.

pretty spring nights, without the day tourists :)
