Dada was an anti-war art movement that started in Switzerland during World War I, protesting the futility and stupidity of war.
Amongst its original members were Germans Sophie Tauber and Hugo Ball, Romanian Tristan Tzara, German Max Ernst, Frenchman Marcel Duchamp, American Man Ray and so many other significant poets, artists, musicians and writers hoping for a saner world.
We could do with a similar art movement these days to protest the futility, stupidity and pointlessness of war; the irrationality of politicians allegedly elected to do a job but more concerned with self promotion; and the ongoing hatred of humans towards their fellow humans.
We're Here looks at Dada.

One of the most aurally distinctive bus types of its period was the Volvo Ailsa, with a front-mounted, turbocharged engine that was small for its day making a sound that was like no other. That was particularly the case when the bus was being driven hard, which in the case of those Ailsas in Glasgow was most often. By the time this shot was taken in around 2003 the Ailsas in Glasgow were part of First's fleet, well past their best and rather rough to say the least. Here 31371 (KGG 140Y) and 31350 (KGG 103Y) race across the Clyde, bound for South Nitshill and Thornliebank respectively. Both were last recorded by DVLA in early 2005.

I wasn't fortunate enough to catch a concert in the Harpa during our stay in Reykjavik but on the morning of this visit there was a free Orchestra performance for children in one corner of the atrium which formed a wonderful aural backdrop to my photographic exploration of the amazing building.

From Wikipedia : "Harpa is a concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavík, Iceland. The opening concert was held on May 4, 2011.
Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The structure consists of a steel framework clad with geometric shaped glass panels of different colours. The building was originally part of a redevelopment of the Austurhöfn area dubbed World Trade Center Reykjavík, which was partially abandoned when the financial crisis took hold. The development was intended to include a 400-room hotel, luxury apartments, retail units, restaurants, a car park and the new headquarters of Icelandic bank Landsbanki.
The completion of the structure was uncertain until the government decided in 2008 to fully fund the rest of the construction costs for the half-built concert hall. For several years it was the only construction project in existence in Iceland. The building was given its name on the Day of Icelandic Music on 11 December 2009, prior to which it was called The Reykjavík Concert Hall and Conference Centre (Icelandic: Tónlistar- og ráðstefnuhúsið í Reykjavík). The building is the first purpose-built concert hall in Reykjavík. It houses the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the offices of The Icelandic Opera."

Found a new route to the red hills today, and tried a couple of ICM shots. This is probably my personal favourite.
This place is known locally as the red hills. I am really not sure why it gets called that, or indeed whether it has a more formal identify. You can see a hint of red in there though.. so maybe that has something to do with it.

Hunslet 3818 was built in 1954 for NCB Fife area, working at a number of pits before arriving at Comrie in 1971. It was one of the last locos overhauled at NCB Cowdenbeath Central Workshops when it gained the corporate blue and yellow livery. By the early 1980s it was spare to hired in class 08s but saw occasional use including this enthusiasts day on 9th April 1982. When Comrie closed in the mid 1980s it headed for preservation by the SRPS at Bo’ness.
This is one of a series of photos taken that morning.

A chance to have Andania from the North West to East Anglia wasn’t to be sniffed at. As I type this we’re just through Bletchley, the loco is in fine form and the driver providing much aural pleasure!

Ava being just being herself, modeling my Grado SR80 headphones. It's the first time she discovered my iPod, and it would seem she liked what I had on there...
They sound great... but with a capable headphone amp they sound truly AWESOME. To be fair, especially if you listen to your music with an iPod or other portable... get a portable headphone amp and smile. (or alternately, the SR-60 headphones, which are happy being driven by the iPod's built in amplifier.)

HOT AND SMOKEY at the Thirlmere Festival of Steam.
The sun is burning hot and almost directly overhead, a brisk but hot Nor'easter is gusting across the scene, but Canberra's 3016 and 3642 still manage to strut their visual and aural stuff as the Thirlmere Flyer climb the steep grade to the Depot.
3642 has replaced 6029, that had developed mechanical problems the previous day, and 3016 has come down from Thirlmere to assist the 36 Class back up the long grade.

Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors at Hirshhorn Museum, DC
A dazzling universe...
While still a child, the now 87-year old artist began experiencing “visual and aural hallucinations.” Later, she succeeded in translating them into art, although the journey was not an easy one. It eventually led to insanely successful exhibits like the recent one in DC but it was long hampered by her mother's disapproval of her career choice and Interrupted by stays in mental institutions.
Trying to make it as an artist in New York in the 1950S, she was taken aback by the hostile attitude toward her. Making matters worse, she found herself in abject poverty.
She eventually found a degree of fame, holding exhibitions in packed galleries and becoming notorious for various stunts.
Decades before the Occupy Wall Street movement, Kusama organized a happening in New York`s financial district, declaring that she wanted to “Obliterate Wall Street men with polka dots.”
After many ups and downs, Kusama finally has become a global phenomenon in the past few years. Her signature polka dots (see next photo) are immediately recognizable. In other works of her art, the visitor can easily get lost - or at least irritated and disoriented :-)

The distinctive note of the five-cylinder Gardner LW engine always took me back to boyhood visits to an "aunt" (actually just an old friend of my mother's) at Pucklechurch, near Bristol, and the flagstoned kitchen of her wayside cottage. Strangely, I have no personal recollection of a feature that might have been expected to make a strong impression on a young mind. The arrangements for the disposal of bodily waste consisted of a shed in the garden, containing what must have been a capacious bin. There were some wooden boards across the top with a circular aperture cut out of them. The bin is said to have been emptied onto the garden, which was of unusual fecundity, at roughly six-monthly intervals. In those days the bus to Pucklechurch was always a Bristol L-type, whose emergence from the neighbouring bus depot I awaited, with all the patience of a seven year-old, at the bus stop outside Page Park and opposite Staple Hill's police station and magistrates' court. As the shivering black mudguard came to rest alongside me, and the conductor drew aside the sliding door, I took in the autovac pump, the advertisement for Georges' Beers and the melodious clatter of the Gardner five-pot, which I could distinguish from the sounds of other bus engines.
So, in after years, on visits to the eastern counties, there came frequent "flashback" moments. Tightwad companies such as Lincolnshire Road Car and Eastern Counties, to whom fuel economy came as a free gift from God in the form of flat operating regions, must have been the last buyers of Gardner 5LWs (in their vertical form) and the FS Lodekka the last Bristol type to which they were fitted. Its successor, the FLF, was scarcely over-powered with the six-cylinder version. Outside Cambridge Station on Thursday 11th August 1977 was this agreeable five-cylinder Bristol FS of the Eastern Counties fleet. You didn't see many of those wavy-backed seats about. Hants & Dorset had some. The Marshall company, which had taken advertising space on the back of the vehicle, is still an important force in the local economy and still runs a car dealership ...though not, of course, in Leyland vehicles. It must have chucked in the bus-bodying racket at about this time.
Nothing would have prepared me for the aural assault I experienced standing 40ft from a Lightning on full chat.
It felt like my insides had been rearranged!

The species is found in a wide range of habitats, including native and introduced forests, agricultural land, and suburban yards. Because it prefers areas with dense undergrowth, it is more often heard than seen. The White-rumped Shama has striking plumage and a clear, melodious song that can be heard from several hundred meters away, although aural identification is complicated by the shama's tendency to mimic other species.
I can't help it, sometimes it's almost aural, you can almost hear the light and how it breaks through the glass and gently rubs on the skin and clothing, making a gentle shhhh sound on the edge of silence...

Also nicknamed ‘50-50s’ - the English Electric-built British Class 50 numbered 50 locomotives, and in their earlier troubled days, it was joked that they only stood a 50-50 chance of reaching their destination. The ‘Hoover’ nickname stemmed from the loud woosh emitted by the clean air plant that was likened to the sound of a vacuum cleaner, for sure a Class 50 aural signature.
The Class 50s were built in 1967-68 for service on the West Coast Main Line north of Crewe but were drafted en bloc to the Western Region after the full WCML route was electrified in 1974. Initially disliked by rail enthusiasts for enabling the displacement of the beloved Western-class diesel hydraulics, the Class 50s eventually won their hearts. Major rebuilding helped improve Hoover reliability. The Class 50s’ turn for withdrawal came between 1987 and 1992. Numerous class members were secured for preservation, and 18 out of the original 50 survive today.
Two survivors posed outside St. Leonards TMD on the occasion of the 1994 Hastings Rail Gala. Class pioneer 50 050 (originally D400) sports the later BR Large Logo livery and the ‘Fearless’ name. I did not record its sister alongside in Network Southeast livery, but speculate that it was either 50 026 ‘Indomitable’ or 50 027 ‘Lion’.
