The plain at Thingvellir, SW Iceland, June 2015.
Thingvellir National Park is a famous historical site. This is the site where the vikings formed the (worlds ?) first Althing (General Assembly) in year 930. Here they gathered the legeslative assembly and formed the laws. The Althing continued here untill 1798, when it was moved to Reykjavik.
Secondly the area is a key geological site where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The area is part of the Mid Atlantic Rift and here the to plates drift apart and the land on the margin of the two plates subsides, forming the depression or valley. It is estimated the subsidence has been arount 4 m the last 1000 years and the plates has moved about 70 m apart during the last 10000 years.
