Surapadma (surapadman (Tamil: சூரபத்மன்) was an asura who was the son of the asura rishi Vajranaga and the princess Varangi, and the grandson of sage Kashyapa. He was defeated by Murugan but asking for pardon prior to his defeat, was granted the honour of becoming his vahana, the peacock. He is the brother of Singamuka and Tarakasura. His eldest son is Banukopan.

According to Hindu mythology, Apsaras are beautiful dancing
girls who are the wives of Ghandarvas, the court musicians of
Indra; king of Devas.
As per Hindu legend, the “elixir of immortality” was lost in the mythological Ocean of Milk and the gods went looking for it. It is said that these goddesses were born from the ocean of milk; water nymphs that were pulled from the ocean by the Hindu Devas (gods); Visuki, the god of serpents and a group of morally corrupt demons, the Asuras.
In Angkor wat temple walls and relief, you can see, around 1800 apsara carvings with different clothing, hair style, floral decorations, headdresses.. It has been concluded that they were modelled on real Apsaras in the Khmer court of 12th century.

Bakong is the first temple mountain of sandstone constructed by rulers of the Khmer empire at Angkor near modern Siem Reap in Cambodia. In the final decades of the 9th century AD, it served as the official state temple of King Indravarman I in the ancient city of Hariharalaya, located in an area that today is called Roluos.
In 802 AD, the first king of Angkor Jayavarman II declared the sovereignty of Cambodia. A few decades later, his successors constructed Bakong in stages as the first temple mountain of sandstone at Angkor.
The structure of Bakong took shape of stepped pyramid, popularly identified as temple mountain of early Khmer temple architecture. The striking similarity of the Bakong and Borobudur temple in Java suggests strongly that Borobudur was served as the prototype of Bakong.
The pyramid itself has five levels. It was reconstructed by Maurice Glaize at the end of the 1930s according to methods of anastylosis. On the top there is a single tower that is much later in provenance, and the architectural style of which is not that of the 9th century foundations of Hariharalaya, but that of the 12th-century temple city Angkor Wat.
Though the pyramid at one time must have been covered with bas relief carvings in stucco, today only fragments remain. A dramatic scene-fragment involving what appear to be asuras in battle gives a sense of the likely high quality of the carvings. Large stone statues of elephants are positioned as guardians at the corners of the three lower levels of the pyramid. Statues of lions guard the stairways.
Every high school student who's read Shakespeare's Macbeth knows the very heart of Macbeth's courage to be: 'Fear not, Macbeth. No man that’s born of woman / Shall e'er have power upon thee.' The tables are turned on him when he's vanquished by Macduff, not properly born but 'from his mother's womb / Untimely ripped'.
Similarly on a cosmic scene: asura Soorapadman. Why this thusness now? Well, yesterday - after not having visited for a long time - I trained north to the great Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Murugan at the Batu Caves (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/4978510635/in/photolis...). On the train I met a lovely originally Indian couple from the USA, devout and fuil of holy fervor for Murugan. We spoke of the fascinating Hindu divine cosmology and obviously also of Lord Shiva. And that brought me to that comparison with Macbeth.
Lord Murugan is younger than Soorapadman, one of the Asura, creatures, perhaps demons, sprouting from Shiva to do either good or bad. Soorapadman was bad with a capital B and evil with ditto E. But he could not be vanquished by anything that did not come directly from Lord Shiva himself so he rested assured in his wickedness. At last, aggravated by Soorapadman's misdeeds, Shiva decided to create again: good Lord Murugan. With his vel-shaped javelin, Murugan slew Soorapadman - to the latter's unexpected dismay - and rid the cosmos of that Evil. The inset photo shows the javelin cleaving the Wicked Demon.
Now, the Caves are devoted to Murugan, and Soorapadman is featured just outside high on the left as you enter from the top of this long staircase. Most people just pass by, intent on all the deities in the cave subservient to Murugan.

In Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was an asura.
Mahishasura's father Rambha was king of the asuras,and he once fell in love with a water buffalo (Princess Shyamala, cursed to be a buffalo); Mahishasura was born out of this union. He is therefore able to change between human and buffalo form at will (mahisha is Sanskrit word for buffalo).
After this, he started terrorising Heaven (Swarga Loka) and earth (Prithvi). He invaded heaven, defeating the king of gods Indra, and drove all the gods (devas) out of heaven.
The gods then went into conclave to decide what could be done with this invincible asura. Since he was invincible to all men, they created his nemesis in the form of a young woman, Durga (a form of Shakti or Parvati). She combined the powers of all the devas in a beautiful form. According to one legend, the goddess Durga created an army to fight against the forces of the demon-king Mahishasura, who was terrorizing Heaven and Earth.
After nine days of fighting, during which Mahishasura's army was decimated, she finally killed him on the tenth day of the waxing moon. Durga is therefore called Mahishasuramardini (literally the slayer of the buffalo demon), the destroyer of Mahishasura. During several battles, she appears in her incarnation of Kali; particularly while fighting Raktabija, who has the magic boon that every drop of blood falling from him to the ground will become another Raktabija (literally the blood borne). Here Kali spreads her giant tongue and drinks up all the blood before it falls to the earth.

This autumnal festival popularly known as Sharodotsav, recalls the power of female Shakti symbolized by the Goddess Durga who slays asura to reestablish peace and sanctity on earth again. Bengalis all over the world during these days of Durga Puja rejoice to their heart's content reconnecting with friends and relatives. Durga Puja is an occasion when the familiar sound of Dhak, Dhunuchi nachh,the mild fragrance of Shiuli, gives a familiar tug to every Bengali heart.

Angkor Thom ("Great City"), located in present-day Cambodia, was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. It covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the center of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north.
Angkor Thom is in the Bayon style. This manifests itself in the large scale of the construction, in the widespread use of laterite, in the face-towers at each of the entrances to the city and in the naga-carrying giant figures which accompany each of the towers.
The faces on the 23 m towers at the city gates, which are later additions to the main structure, take after those of the Bayon and pose the same problems of interpretation. They may represent the king himself, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, guardians of the empire's cardinal points, or some combination of these. A causeway spans the moat in front of each tower: these have a row of devas on the left and asuras on the right, each row holding a naga in the attitude of a tug-of-war.

As soon as I saw Asura, I knew I would have to make him in Lego form. He's an awesome villain, with just the right amount of edge to make him interesting. And he's not an evil b**** like Medusa.
I made his head wraps with plastic covered with white electrical tape. I also made the "eyes" on them with tape.
His hair details are made with tape, as are his eyes, neck wraps, and shirt.

Ashura is famous around the world for the men who whip themselves, with lot of blood everywhere, as it happens every year in Kerbala... in Iran, many villages have special celebrations. In Khorramabad , the shia people mourn the death of Iman Hussein, and on the early morning of Ashura day, they enter a mud pool mixed with rose water. The mud is a symbol to honorate the death of someone you loved a lot. Some kids and some girls also cover with mud. Iran.Very few tourists come to see those ceremonies (i met just one, french), as foreigners do not undersand the meaning of Ashura and many i met thought it was dangerous to attend it... This is a time of sharingand mourning , so all the foreigners are welcomed. The iranian governement tries to promote Asura with huge billboards in english, but it does not work at all!

According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura was a combination of both an Asura and a Mahisha (aurochs) with trident. He intended to annihilate all the Devas since they were the arch-enemies of Asuras. The legend of Mahishasura is important in Hindu mythology since the goddess Durga was born in order to slay him. Therefore, his story is an important part of shaktiism which venerates the goddess Durga.

In Hindu mythology, its origin is found in one of the popular creation myths and the Hindu theories on evolution, the Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk), which finds mention in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana.
The Gods had lost their strength, and to regain it, they thought of churning the Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrit (the nectar of immortality), this required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to work together with a promise of sharing the nectar equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha (urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. It is believed that during the battle, Lord Vishnu flew away with the Kumbha of elixir, and that is when drops of amrita fell at four places on earth: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and that is where the Kumbh Mela is observed every twelve years.
First written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveller, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645 CE, during the reign of King Harshavardhana.
