"Ash Cave is named after the huge pile of ashes found under the shelter by early settlers. The largest pile was recorded as being 100 feet long, 30 feet wide and 3 feet deep. The source of the ashes is unknown but is believed to be from Indian campfires built up over hundreds of years. One other belief is that the Indians were smelting silver or lead from the rocks. Still another theory claims that saltpeter was made in the cave. No matter the source, several thousand bushels of ashes were found. A test excavation of the ashes in 1877 revealed sticks, arrows, stalks of coarse grasses, animal bones in great variety, bits of pottery, flints and corn cobs"

Hundreds came to St. John Cantius parish to begin the penitential season of Lent. This is a privileged season of grace for the entire Church. It begins the annual solemn preparation for the Easter Mystery which is the culmination of the Church Year.

The Latin name for Lent, Quadragesima, means forty and refers to the forty days Christ spent in the desert which is the origin of the Season.

As happens on every Ash Wednesday, the people receive ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross while the priest says, "Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return." Ashes are a biblical symbol of repentance, sorrow, and humility. It is a fitting beginning to this holy season dedicated to the conversion of our hearts and the need to do acts of penance for ourselves and for the world.

Learning About Raccoons

Normally, the turnaround pad at end of the wheelchair accessible trail offers a beautiful view of a waterfall cascading from the top of Ash Cave, but a drought in southeast Ohio had dried up most of the area's creeks and waterfalls. Even without the waterfall, the view from inside the 90-foot high and 700-foot wide cave was impressive.

PICKLED ASH KEYS

Three weeks ago I made the photo of these seed pods in the village in Scotland where I live. I didn't know what they were until today when I did some online searching and discovered two things.

(1) They are the seed pods of the ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) and are sometimes referred to, in England, as 'ash keys'.

(2) If you get them when they're green they can be pickled. www.eatweeds.co.uk/pickled-ash-keys

From a recent trip to the ash area here in Iceland. It's amazing what the volcano has left behind...

Ash Cave, located in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park, is an enormous horseshoe-shaped formation measuring 700 feet from end to end, with the rim rising 90 feet from the ground. Some steps led to a higher spot at one end of the cave, which is where I took this shot.

As paanta mentioned, ashes were over-planted as landscape trees in the past few decades--especially green ash, which became America's favorite parking lot tree. (It's a floodplain native, so it can survive under pavement with little oxygen in the root zone.)

But my favorite was always the straight, majestic white ash, particularly its bark. The ridges interlace in this nice tidy diamond pattern, it's quite distinctive.
