Around me about 80% of the big trees in farm hedges and roadsides are Ash trees. I think its similar for much of Ireland.
So it is worrying to hear of the Ash dieback disease (Chalara ash dieback) a fungal infection, that has appeared in England. This disease has already apparently killed something close to 90% of all the Ash tres in Denmark.
I was surprised to discover that the disease has already been detected in Ireland:

Ashness Bridge is a traditional stone-built bridge on the single-track road from the Borrowdale road to Watendlath, in the English Lake District.
I took this photo of Ash Wednesday backstage after the concert of Einsturzende Neubauten at Divadlo Archa in Prague November 2010. Ash Wednesday is known as a synth pioneer. He has broken new ground worldwide with his innovative synth sounds that varied with electronica to punk to industrial and to new approaches to digital sampling. Ash was one of the first to combine experimental analog synesizer textures with punk/rock rhythms. It all began in 1976 with the Australian band JAB and then he carried on with Australian band The Models in 1979. He joined with Al Webb and Andrew Picouleau to do experimental recording projects called "The Metronomes". He worked on many projects and collaborations, too many to mention. One important collaboration: the band Crashland! Ash pursued new directions with this band and developed his approach to digital sampling.
Ash moved to Berlin in 1992 and lived there for 5 years. He worked with Nina Hagen with preproduction and programming for her 1995 album ReuD euch (Bee Happy). He began working with Einsturzende Neubauten in 1997 and went on tours and recorded a number of albums with them. He continues working with them, but he is also based in Melbourne. He reunited with ex-Crashland! Vocalist Lyn Gordon to form “The Tingler” and released a CD in 2000. He continues to divide his time between Melbourne and Berlin creating his special sounds. I met Ash awhile ago in Berlin. I never know where I might run into him. I do not see myself going to Australia any time soon, but I am sure that I will turn a corner or walk into a room and meet him on these shores some time soon.

Father Paul Soper, Fr. Matt Williams and Fr. Jonathan Gaspar along with Natalia Soares and Ann Gennaro all from the Pastoral Center in Braintree, took part in distribution of ashes Wednesday morning at Park Street Station in downtown Boston. The Ash Wednesday event, sponsored by the Secretary for Evangelization and Discipleship distributed ashes to approximately 200 people. Every recipient was also given a sheet of paper with a short description of the meaning of ashes as well as an invitation to return to Church this Lent. The four area Catholic Chapels were also listed for their convenience. Photos by George Martell - BCDS - All rights reserved 2016
Narrowboats "Ash" and "Baron" on the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal. 15th June 2015.
"Ash" consists of a modern stern attached to the bow section of former Severn & Canal Carrying Co. motor boat "Alder", built by Charles Hill & Sons of Bristol in 1935. The stern section of "Alder" exists as a separate boat.
"Baron" was built as a steamer for Fellows Morton & Clayton in 1915 and later converted into a motor boat.
Note the bluff lines of the Sevener's bow compated to the fine lines of the Josher.

With the labor dispute between dock workers and shipping lines resolved, container traffic originating at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles began moving again. Another eastbound BNSF stack train is seen east of Ash Hill, California on 27FEB15. The two tracks of the BNSF Needles Subdivision split briefly between Ash Hill and Siberia. This eastbound train is on what I believe is considered the “south track”. The “north track” is about two miles to my right.
