RAWTENSTALL'S new supermarket on the Lower Mills site off St Mary's Way has finally been announced and … it Asda be Asda!

Although the 'big five' supermarket chains were vying for the new store, in the end it came down to just two and Asda proved it most wanted the site.

The new store will be almost double the size of the existing Asda in Bocholt Way - and will lead to the creation of a further 150 new jobs as well as securing the future of the store's current 350 employees.

Asda has bought the lower section of land, off St Mary's Way, from the Hurstwood Group and will be submitting an application to Rossendale Council detailing the design, landscaping and car park layout with a view to opening by next November.

The site already has outline planning approval for a retail and leisure development.

Superstore Buildings

This week we ordered our grocery shopping online and a man in a lorry delivered it. The neighbours enjoyed watching all our bags being carried into the house, I'm sure they thought we were right greedy gits.

Bottom left is Sweyne Park. ASDA, Rayleigh Leisure Centre and Makro are also in the picture.

This little van came a calling with all my shopping.

Since the Fareham ASDA was redeveloped with a first floor I have enjoyed the views from the escalator. It looks rather good when fully stocked early in the morning.

I've been meaning to take a picture of this for ages.. it must've been up for at least a year and because its at ground level, no-one has noticed it and no-one has removed it. Its a strangely touching scene...

Drove to Asda in Huntly for a practice run in the car. Half the distance to Aberdeen but a very twisty road. Would not be much fun in the dark and terrible in winter conditions
