ASDA Chadderton in all it's glory.. This is my former work and the main supermarket for north and central Chadderton. Morrison's has South Chadderton. Look at Chadderton's local yearly Christmas tree. Ok it was donated but it's a little on the small size compared to estates such as Fitton Hill in Oldham. Photo taken from the piece of grass next to Chadderton Sports Centre/Swimming Baths Middleton Road, Chadderton.

An Asda and a Gateway trolley by St Andrew’s Close.

I found a Gateway trolley on Caradoc Road, Northville on 24 December 2021; I think this must be the same one, migrated to Pontrhydyrun.

Gateway, founded in 1875 in Bristol, was taken over by Somerfield in 1992. There was a Somerfield supermarket in Cwmbran but this disappeared after Somerfield was acquired by the Coop in 2008. So where has this trolley been since then?

In 2010 ASDA bought the UK stores of Netto; they started converting them in 2011. This one at Manor Top is one of the first in Yorkshire to be converted.

ASDA have a big share of the "large" supermarket business, but in recent years Tesco and Sainsburys have moved into the "small" shops end of the market too, to increase their market share. Whilst hypermarkets will always do well in the UK, they aren't suitable for many people, and there's been a new focus by the big companies at "local" shops (where they may be able to sell things for more money for those unable to drive to out-of-town hypermarkets and pay for a £100 trolley of goods - the "top up" market of those spending £10/£20 a time can be just as lucrative)

I like popping into Asda – they frequently have special offers for me 😜

A final shot, just to give you an idea where it was in front of the store - the answer, only about 50 metres or so!
