The wood effect is made by dragging a rubber tool with a wood grain carved into it through the artex as it dries. This type of technique is also used with paint.

...Water World / Artex Compound...

Brgy. Panghulo , Malabon , Philippines

The Artex Compound was once a thriving community of laborers working for the Artex Yupangco Textile Mills Corporation. Workers staged a strike in 1984, however, because of low wages. The company fought back, claiming that their low wage was compensated by free housing. Neither side wanted to back down until the company eventually closed in 1989. Workers decided to stay and claim the property as theirs.

But unemployment wasn't their only concern. The compound, being the lowest point of Malabon, was constantly flooded whenever it rained due to its location. In 2004, due to continuous rains, the floods came and never left. Many have gone, but those who remained learned to live a life with water as both their companion and foe.

As technology seeps into every second of our waking lives, what experiences from the digital realm are real and worthy of engagement? What moments spent in flesh are glossed over and abstracted, losing their authenticity? How do we assign value to experiences, inside and outside of our screens? How is that value reflected in the ways we work and play in San Francisco and other urban environments?

Where: Hotel Zetta, 55 5th Street in San Francisco, California.

What: Music, art installations and performances. Meet the artists and learn about their work:

Duong Thi Mong Thu, a Vietnamese journalist, shoots a documentary in Artex Compound in Malabon, Philippines that is perpetually under water. Most of the area is prone to flooding during the rainy season. Despite the village being half-submerged, over 300 families still reside in the area, getting around by boats. The field work shoot was part of a fellowship on documentary production of the Probe Media Foundation last September 2007.

Reminds me of a graph I once drew. And artex.

There are no other places to store their bikes but up in the air.

Eventually all that artex will be at least DISTRACTED from, by more pictures. But the important thing is the walls are not tobacco yellow any more and neither is the ceiling, and the wooden bits aren't BLACK!

There will be a roman blind in the window by the Autumn when the nights close in. I've got the fabric. You can preview it on www.johnlewis.com/238813/Product.aspx if you like.
