Arnica montana (Asteraceae) 162 22

Arnica montana is a moderately toxic ethnobotanical European flowering plant in the sunflower family. It is noted for its large yellow flower head.

Arnica montana is widespread across most of Europe. Arnica montana grows in nutrient-poor siliceous meadows or clay soils. It mostly grows on alpine meadows and up to nearly 3,000 m. It is rare overall but may be locally abundant. It is becoming rarer, particularly in the north of its distribution, largely due to increasingly intensive agriculture and commercial wild-crafting.

Historically, Arnica montana has been used as an herbal medicine for centuries.

Arnica montana has been used as a herbal medicine - "eine Heilpflanze" in German - for centuries.

I saw quite a lot of them on Stöckli, where we arrived after taking the cable car Gütsch-Express from the new station at Nätschen till the end station Gütsch.

I chose this little group because the flower that really stands out is the rosy Indian paintbrush, Castilleja rhexifolia -- that color really seems to glow. It may defy description as well--it certainly is not rosy, or purple, or pink. What do you call that color?

My significant other says it is magenta.

I am less sure of the others. I think the one with droopy yellow petals is longleaf arnica, Arnica longifolia. The one with lavender petals may be leafy aster, Aster foliaceus.

So there is much I do not know about this frame, other than this natural composition caught my eye in a mountain meadow resplendent with wildflowers.

Arctic Arnica Alpina is a subspecies of Arctic arnica (Arnica angustifolia) that is an Arctic and alpine species of plants in the sunflower family, known by the common names narrowleaf arnica and Arctic arnica.

It is native to colder regions in Scandinavia, Europe, Asia and North America (northern and western Canada, Alaska, northern Rocky Mountains).

Arnica montana or Wolf's bane is very popular in herbal medicine, especially for anti-inflammatory purposes.

It is lovely to see an alpine meadow dotted with these bright yellow flowers.

The sun just begins to rise over the mountains, casting sunbeams through the sky. Morning has come.

Spring is here.!

Photo taken in the botanical garden in the public garden in Bordeaux

A picture of the sun shining through snow-covered branches. A picture of a picture, to be exact -- because I used a high f-stop on this to capture the sunrays (and glistening ice crystals, seemingly!) it was too sharp for my liking. And so I took a picture of the picture on my computer screen to create an aesthetically acceptable version....to me at least -- don't get on me about proper photo quality, lol. Arnica is a wildflower of the Alps that has often been used for medicinal purposes. There are balms containing Arnica montagna that are used to relax tense muscles, to give just one example.

The Arnica flower (which one in particular I'm not certain) and the Rockslide Larkspur.
