In the 11th to 16th centuries in Hungary messengers (praecones) and couriers (cursores) carried the messages and orders of kings, while the counties and the aristocracy operated their own messenger services. Ordinary people, however, could only entrust their messages and parcels to travellers and traders. Later, the so-called community messenger service, on both foot and horseback, was also developed through which community leaders kept in touch with each other.
O Cemitério da Consolação é a mais antiga necrópole em funcionamento na cidade de São Paulo e uma das principais referências brasileiras no campo da arte tumular. Inaugurado em 15 de agosto de 1858.

Em seus primeiros anos, o cemitério da Consolação era o lugar de sepultamento de pessoas de todas as classes sociais, incluídos os escravos.
In its early years , the cemetery of Consolation was the burial place of people of all social classes , including slaves.
Com a prosperidade advinda da aristocracia da cafeicultura e o surgimento de uma expressiva burguesia em São Paulo, o Cemitério da Consolação passou a abrigar obras de arte produzidas por escultores de renome, para ornamentar os jazigos de personalidades importantes na história do Brasil.
With the arising prosperity of the coffee aristocracy and the emergence of a significant bourgeoisie in São Paulo, the Cemetery of Consolation has housed works of art produced by renowned sculptors, to decorate the graves of important personalities in the history of Brazil .

I describe this photographic series (with some “poetic license” on the theme of “beach photography”) by quoting an introduction I wrote some time ago, for a photographic series of mine having the same theme today. I would like to focus on two photos from the current series, on how, from a particular situation, in this case photographic, others can arise, I would like to share this with those who are not too bored reading this story: I photographed a young girl while she was reading a book, she was sitting inside one of the many lava formations present along the shore of Naxos (near Taormina), dug with a perfectly rounded shape (this suggests that their origin is man-made, I will not dwell on the hypothesis that attempts to explain these ancient formations), the little water collected inside these "pools" certainly gave a little refreshment to the unaware "reader", once at home, curiosity pushed me to investigate what she was reading, the high resolution of the photos allowed me to easily read the two pages of the book she was holding in her hand, and it was a kind of revelation, some paragraphs of the book, and I was more and more intrigued, about what the book was and its Author, a A quick Google search, and I found what I was looking for. The book is titled "Something Wonderful Always Happens." Its author is Gianluca Gotto. I didn't know him, but I was able to watch and listen to him on YouTube. I found it extremely interesting. I've already ordered the book on Amazon. I'll just quote a short excerpt from the page the reader was reading. It's brief, as I don't want to infringe on any copyright: "(...) do you know what the three poisons of man are according to Buddhism?" I shook my head. "Greed, or the desire to always have more when each of us already has everything we need; ignorance, or the lack of awareness: believing that life is different from what it is here and now; and finally, anger, a condition contrary to any form of happiness."
Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In Italy there are numerous photographers (I will mention only a few) who have made in their long career images captured in seaside resorts (generally we speaking of "beach photography" similar to "street photography"), photographs that are often unique in their style, such as that adopted by Franco Fontana, I mention Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (of whom I am honored to have known him personally), and Massimo Vitali, famous photographer (understood by some as "the photographer of the beaches"), especially for his beautiful photographs taken on the beaches (but not only), thanks to the presence of elevated fixed structures as a kind of mezzanine, built specifically in the bathing beaches for the realization of his photographs. This is my introduction to talk about the theme proposed here, that of “beach photography” (with some exceptions for “narrative” reasons), with a series of photographs taken on the beaches surrounding Taormina (Sicily). ……………………………………………………………
Descrivo questa serie fotografica (con qualche “licenza poetica” sul tema della “beach photography”) riportando una mia introduzione scritta po’ di tempo fa, per una mia serie fotografica avente lo stesso tema odierno. Desidero soffermarmi su due foto dell’attuale serie, di come, da una particolare situazione, in questo caso fotografica, ne possano scaturire altre, desidero condividere ciò con chi non si annoi troppo nel leggere questo racconto: ho fotografato a sua insaputa una giovane ragazza mentre leggeva un libro, era seduta all’interno di una delle tante formazioni laviche presenti lungo il bagnasciuga di Naxos (vicino Taormina), scavate con forma perfettamente rotondeggiante (questo fa pensare che la loro origine sia manufatta, non mi dilungo sulla ipotesi che tenta di spiegare queste antiche formazioni), la poca acqua raccolta all’interno di queste “vasche” davano certamente un po’ di refrigerio alla inconsapevole “lettrice” , una volta a casa, la curiosità mi ha spinto ad indagare su cosa stesse leggendo, l’elevata risoluzione delle foto mi ha consentito di leggere con facilità le due pagine del libro da lei tenuto in mano, ed è stata una specie di rivelazione, qualche trafiletto del libro, ed ero sempre più incuriosito, su quale fosse il libro ed il suo Autore, una breve ricerca su Google, ed ho trovato quanto cercavo, il libro si intitola “Succede sempre qualcosa di meraviglioso”, il suo Autore è Gianluca Gotto, non lo conoscevo, su You Tube ho potuto vederlo ed ascoltarlo, l’ho trovato estremamente interessante, il libro l’ho già ordinato su Amazon; riporterò qui solo un breve trafiletto preso dalla pagina che stava leggendo la lettrice, breve, non vorrei incorrere in qualche violazione sui diritti d’Autore: “ (…) sai quali sono i tre veleni dell’uomo secondo il Buddhismo ?” Scossi la testa. “La cupidigia, ovvero il desiderio di avere sempre di più quando ognuno di noi ha già tutto ciò che gli serve; l’ignoranza, ovvero la mancanza di consapevolezza: credere che la vita sia diversa da ciò che è qui e ora; infine la rabbia, una condizione contraria a ogni forma di felicità.”
Le vacanze al mare nascono nel ‘700 in Gran Bretagna, nasce questo fenomeno sociale nel quale i bagnanti per la prima volta si recano sulle spiagge, non certo assolate come quelle bagnate dal mar Mediterraneo, sono completamente vestiti; questa “nuova moda” è anche incoraggiata dalla convinzione dei medici inglesi fin dall’inizio del ‘700 (a partire dal 1720 circa), che respirare l’aria salmastra del mare e fare il bagno nell’acqua marina fredda sia salutare, rinvigorisca il corpo e curi le malattie polmonari (convinzione ancor più rafforzata dalla scoperta dell’ossigeno da parte di Antoine Lavoisier nel 1778, che portò alla maggiore diffusione e convinzione delle teorie sui benefici per la salute dell’aria di mare, che si pensava essere più ossigenata e pura), queste teorie spingono molte persone del Nord Europa affette da gravi malattie polmonari a trascorrere dei lunghi periodi nel sud Europa, spesso nel meridione d’Italia, questo spiega perché a Taormina giungono personaggi dalle qualità straordinarie per curare il proprio “mal sottile”, il barone fotografo Wilhelm von Gloeden e la lady inglese Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan si facevano portare coi muli l’acqua di mare proveniente dall’Isola Bella, però mentre W. Von Gloeden riscaldava l’acqua marina, la nobildonna inglese lady Trevelian non la riscaldava, memore degli insegnamenti della scuola medica inglese, questo causerà la sua morte per broncopolmonite il 4 ottobre del 1907 (vedi i miei precedenti “racconti fotografici” su Taormina). Infatti la “talassoterapia” nasce in Gran Bretagna, insieme al fenomeno sociale e culturale della frequentazione dei lidi balneari (prima dell’inizio del ‘700, il mare e le sue spiagge erano vissuti, tranne che per motivi di commercio e di pesca, in maniera oscura e negativa, dal mare spesso provenivano gravissimi pericoli come gli sbarchi improvvisi di feroci pirati, oppure potevano sbarcare stranieri portatori di gravissime malattie). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia).

The lands were purchased by Henri Hurault, comte de Cheverny, a lieutenant-general and military treasurer for Louis XI, whose descendent the marquis de Vibraye is the present owner.
Lost to the Crown because of fraud to the State, it was donated by King Henri II to his mistress Diane de Poitiers. However, she preferred Château de Chenonceau and sold the property to the former owner's son, Philippe Hurault, who built the château between 1624 and 1630, to designs by the sculptor-architect of Blois, Jacques Bougier, who was trained in the atelier of Salomon de Brosse, and whose design at Cheverny recalls features of the Palais du Luxembourg. The interiors were completed by the daughter of Henri Hurault and Marguerite, marquise de Montglas, by 1650, employing craftsmen from Blois.
During the next 150 years ownership passed to many owners, and in 1768 a major interior renovation was undertaken. Required to forfeit much of the Hurault wealth at the time of the French Revolution, the family sold it in 1802, at the height of the Empire but bought it back in 1824, during the Restauration under Charles X. The aristocracy was once again in a very strong political and economic position.
In 1914, the owner opened the chateau to the public, one of the first to do so. The family still operates it, and Château Cheverny remains a top tourist attraction to this day, renowned for magnificent interiors and its collection of furniture, tapestries, and objets d'art. A pack of some seventy dogs are also kept on the grounds and are taken out for hunts twice weekly.

Desidero soffermarmi su due foto dell’attuale serie, di come, da una particolare situazione, in questo caso fotografica, ne possano scaturire altre, desidero condividere ciò con chi non si annoi troppo nel leggere questo racconto: ho fotografato a sua insaputa una giovane ragazza mentre leggeva un libro, era seduta all’interno di una delle tante formazioni laviche presenti lungo il bagnasciuga di Naxos (vicino Taormina), scavate con forma perfettamente rotondeggiante (questo fa pensare che la loro origine sia manufatta, non mi dilungo sulla ipotesi che tenta di spiegare queste antiche formazioni), la poca acqua raccolta all’interno di queste “vasche” davano certamente un po’ di refrigerio alla inconsapevole “lettrice” , una volta a casa, la curiosità mi ha spinto ad indagare su cosa stesse leggendo, l’elevata risoluzione delle foto mi ha consentito di leggere con facilità le due pagine del libro da lei tenuto in mano, ed è stata una specie di rivelazione, qualche trafiletto del libro, ed ero sempre più incuriosito, su quale fosse il libro ed il suo Autore, una breve ricerca su Google, ed ho trovato quanto cercavo, il libro si intitola “Succede sempre qualcosa di meraviglioso”, il suo Autore è Gianluca Gotto, non lo conoscevo, su You Tube ho potuto vederlo ed ascoltarlo, l’ho trovato estremamente interessante, il libro l’ho già ordinato su Amazon; riporterò qui solo un breve trafiletto preso dalla pagina che stava leggendo la lettrice, breve, non vorrei incorrere in qualche violazione sui diritti d’Autore: “ (…) sai quali sono i tre veleni dell’uomo secondo il Buddhismo ?” Scossi la testa. “La cupidigia, ovvero il desiderio di avere sempre di più quando ognuno di noi ha già tutto ciò che gli serve; l’ignoranza, ovvero la mancanza di consapevolezza: credere che la vita sia diversa da ciò che è qui e ora; infine la rabbia, una condizione contraria a ogni forma di felicità.”
Le vacanze al mare nascono nel ‘700 in Gran Bretagna, nasce questo fenomeno sociale nel quale i bagnanti per la prima volta si recano sulle spiagge, non certo assolate come quelle bagnate dal mar Mediterraneo, sono completamente vestiti; questa “nuova moda” è anche incoraggiata dalla convinzione dei medici inglesi fin dall’inizio del ‘700 (a partire dal 1720 circa), che respirare l’aria salmastra del mare e fare il bagno nell’acqua marina fredda sia salutare, rinvigorisca il corpo e curi le malattie polmonari (convinzione ancor più rafforzata dalla scoperta dell’ossigeno da parte di Antoine Lavoisier nel 1778, che portò alla maggiore diffusione e convinzione delle teorie sui benefici per la salute dell’aria di mare, che si pensava essere più ossigenata e pura), queste teorie spingono molte persone del Nord Europa affette da gravi malattie polmonari a trascorrere dei lunghi periodi nel sud Europa, spesso nel meridione d’Italia, questo spiega perché a Taormina giungono personaggi dalle qualità straordinarie per curare il proprio “mal sottile”, il barone fotografo Wilhelm von Gloeden e la lady inglese Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan si facevano portare coi muli l’acqua di mare proveniente dall’Isola Bella, però mentre W. Von Gloeden riscaldava l’acqua marina, la nobildonna inglese lady Trevelian non la riscaldava, memore degli insegnamenti della scuola medica inglese, questo causerà la sua morte per broncopolmonite il 4 ottobre del 1907 (vedi i miei precedenti “racconti fotografici” su Taormina). Infatti la “talassoterapia” nasce in Gran Bretagna, insieme al fenomeno sociale e culturale della frequentazione dei lidi balneari (prima dell’inizio del ‘700, il mare e le sue spiagge erano vissuti, tranne che per motivi di commercio e di pesca, in maniera oscura e negativa, dal mare spesso provenivano gravissimi pericoli come gli sbarchi improvvisi di feroci pirati, oppure potevano sbarcare stranieri portatori di gravissime malattie). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia).

Belgium. Ostend.
Ostend was King Leopold II's great project; making one of Europe's trendiest seaside resort. In its late 19th century heydays, Ostend rivaled with Monaco, Brighton or Deauville, and was the playground of the aristocracy. At a time, it called itself the "Queen of Belgian beaches".
The town was first mentioned as a fishing village about 1000 years ago. It was already a port of some importance when it joined the Revolt of the Netherlands in 1601 and resisted a 3-year siege against the Spaniards (finally to be taken). Ostend then set up its own colonial company, with trading posts in Africa and India. After Waterloo, the Brits were the first to bathe here, and Queen Victoria herself crossed the Channel to rest in Ostend in 1834.
The two world wars gave a hard blow to Ostend. The old casino was destroyed by the Nazi. After WWII, abusive property development left scars to the city's harmonious Belle Epoque architecture.

Italy, Liguria, Portofino, Spring 2024
Portofino is a comune located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is clustered around its small harbour and is known for the colourfully painted buildings that line the shore. Since the late 19th century, Portofino has attracted tourism of the European aristocracy and it is now a resort for the world's jet set.
Shōren-in (青蓮院) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Also known as the Awata Palace, it was built in the late 13th century. Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu pure land sect, was ordained a monk at Shōren-in at the age of nine.
Shōren-in was formerly the temple of the imperial abbot of the Tendai headquarters on Mount Hiei; the abbot was required to be chosen from the imperial family or high court aristocracy. After the Great Kyoto Fire of 1788, it was used as a temporary imperial palace. The main hall was rebuilt in 1895.
The temple complex contains a garden with massive eight-hundred-year-old camphor trees (kusunoki), and a pond filled with large stones and fed by a small waterfall. (Wikipedia)

Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺, 'Temple of the Golden Pavilion'), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺, lit. 'Deer Garden Temple'), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most popular buildings in Kyoto, attracting many visitors annually. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site, a National Special Landscape and is one of 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites.
The Golden Pavilion (金閣, Kinkaku) is a three-story building on the grounds of the Rokuon-ji temple complex. The top two stories of the pavilion are covered with pure gold leaf. The pavilion functions as a shariden (舎利殿), housing relics of the Buddha (Buddha's Ashes). The building was an important model for Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion Temple) and Shōkoku-ji, which are also located in Kyoto. When these buildings were constructed, Ashikaga Yoshimasa employed the styles used at Kinkaku-ji and even borrowed the names of its second and third floors.
The pavilion successfully incorporates three distinct styles of architecture, which are shinden, samurai and zen, specifically on each floor. Each floor of the Kinkaku uses a different architectural style.
The first floor, called The Chamber of Dharma Waters (法水院, Hō-sui-in), is rendered in shinden-zukuri style, reminiscent of the residential style of the 11th century Heian imperial aristocracy. It is evocative of the Shinden palace style. It is designed as an open space with adjacent verandas and uses natural, unpainted wood and white plaster. This helps to emphasize the surrounding landscape. The walls and fenestration also affect the views from inside the pavilion. Most of the walls are made of shutters that can vary the amount of light and air into the pavilion and change the view by controlling the shutters' heights. The second floor, called The Tower of Sound Waves (潮音洞, Chō-on-dō ), is built in the style of warrior aristocrats, or buke-zukuri. On this floor, sliding wood doors and latticed windows create a feeling of impermanence. The second floor also contains a Buddha Hall and a shrine dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kannon. The third floor is built in traditional Chinese chán (Jpn. zen) style, also known as zenshū-butsuden-zukuri. It is called the Cupola of the Ultimate (究竟頂, Kukkyō-chō). The zen typology depicts a more religious ambiance in the pavilion, as was popular during the Muromachi period.
The roof is in a thatched pyramid with shingles. The building is topped with a bronze hōō (phoenix) ornament. From the outside, viewers can see gold plating added to the upper stories of the pavilion. The gold leaf covering the upper stories hints at what is housed inside: the shrines. The outside is a reflection of the inside. The elements of nature, death, religion, are formed together to create this connection between the pavilion and outside intrusions.
The Golden Pavilion is set in a Japanese strolling garden (回遊式庭園, kaiyū-shiki-teien, lit. a landscape garden in the go-round style). The location implements the idea of borrowing of scenery ("shakkei") that integrates the outside and the inside, creating an extension of the views surrounding the pavilion and connecting it with the outside world. The pavilion extends over a pond, called Kyōko-chi (鏡湖池, Mirror Pond), that reflects the building. The pond contains 10 smaller islands. The zen typology is seen through the rock composition; the bridges and plants are arranged in a specific way to represent famous places in Chinese and Japanese literature. Vantage points and focal points were established because of the strategic placement of the pavilion to view the gardens surrounding the pavilion. A small fishing hall (釣殿, tsuri-dono) or roofed deck is attached to the rear of the pavilion building, allowing a small boat to be moored under it. The pavilion grounds were built according to descriptions of the Western Paradise of the Buddha Amida, intending to illustrate a harmony between heaven and earth. The largest islet in the pond represents the Japanese islands. The four stones forming a straight line in the pond near the pavilion are intended to represent sailboats anchored at night, bound for the Isle of Eternal Life in Chinese mythology.
The garden complex is an excellent example of Muromachi period garden design. The Muromachi period is considered to be a classical age of Japanese garden design. The correlation between buildings and its settings were greatly emphasized during this period. It was an artistic way to integrate the structure within the landscape. The garden designs were characterized by a reduction in scale, a more central purpose, and a distinct setting. A minimalistic approach was brought to the garden design by recreating larger landscapes in a smaller scale around a structure.

He is known for his amazing ability to light. How could I not love him! In fact there is a whole school of lighting called "Rembrandt lighting" This man had it all figured out over 400 years ago, and the principles he came up with still hold true as gold.

Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.
It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland.
They bloom in their full glory for several weeks.
In the home, the flowers may last two to three months or even longer, here I noticed.

I describe this photographic series (with some “poetic license” on the theme of “beach photography”) by quoting an introduction I wrote some time ago, for a photographic series of mine having the same theme today. I would like to focus on two photos from the current series, on how, from a particular situation, in this case photographic, others can arise, I would like to share this with those who are not too bored reading this story: I photographed a young girl while she was reading a book, she was sitting inside one of the many lava formations present along the shore of Naxos (near Taormina), dug with a perfectly rounded shape (this suggests that their origin is man-made, I will not dwell on the hypothesis that attempts to explain these ancient formations), the little water collected inside these "pools" certainly gave a little refreshment to the unaware "reader", once at home, curiosity pushed me to investigate what she was reading, the high resolution of the photos allowed me to easily read the two pages of the book she was holding in her hand, and it was a kind of revelation, some paragraphs of the book, and I was more and more intrigued, about what the book was and its Author, a A quick Google search, and I found what I was looking for. The book is titled "Something Wonderful Always Happens." Its author is Gianluca Gotto. I didn't know him, but I was able to watch and listen to him on YouTube. I found it extremely interesting. I've already ordered the book on Amazon. I'll just quote a short excerpt from the page the reader was reading. It's brief, as I don't want to infringe on any copyright: "(...) do you know what the three poisons of man are according to Buddhism?" I shook my head. "Greed, or the desire to always have more when each of us already has everything we need; ignorance, or the lack of awareness: believing that life is different from what it is here and now; and finally, anger, a condition contrary to any form of happiness."
Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In fact, "thalassotherapy" was born in Great Britain, together with the social and cultural phenomenon of frequenting bathing beaches (before the beginning of the 18th century, the sea and its beaches were lived, except for reasons of trade and fishing, in a dark and negative way, from the sea often came very serious dangers such as the sudden landings of ferocious pirates, or foreigners carrying very serious diseases could land). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia).

Manual labour (in British English, manual labor in American English) or manual work is physical work done by humans, in contrast to labour by machines and working animals. It is most literally work done with the hands (the word "manual" comes from the Latin word for hand) and, by figurative extension, it is work done with any of the muscles and bones of the body. For most of human prehistory and history, manual labour and its close cousin, animal labour, have been the primary ways that physical work has been accomplished. Mechanisation and automation, which reduce the need for human and animal labour in production, have existed for centuries, but it was only starting in the 18th and 19th centuries that they began to significantly expand and to change human culture. To be implemented, they require that sufficient technology exist and that its capital costs be justified by the amount of future wages that they will obviate. Semi-automation is an alternative to worker displacement that combines human labour, automation, and computerization to leverage the advantages of both man and machine.
Although nearly any work can potentially have skill and intelligence applied to it, many jobs that mostly comprise manual labour—such as fruit and vegetable picking, manual materials handling (for example, shelf stocking), manual digging, or manual assembly of parts—often may be done successfully (if not masterfully) by unskilled or semiskilled workers. Thus there is a partial but significant correlation between manual labour and unskilled or semiskilled workers. Based on economic and social conflict of interest, people may often distort that partial correlation into an exaggeration that equates manual labour with lack of skill; with lack of any potential to apply skill (to a task) or to develop skill (in a worker); and with low social class. Throughout human existence the latter has involved a spectrum of variants, from slavery (with stigmatisation of the slaves as "subhuman"), to caste or caste-like systems, to subtler forms of inequality.
Economic competition often results in businesses trying to buy labour at the lowest possible cost (for example, through offshoring or by employing foreign workers) or to obviate it entirely (through mechanisation and automation).
For various reasons, there is a strong correlation between manual labour and unskilled or semiskilled workers, despite the fact that nearly any work can potentially have skill and intelligence applied to it (for example, the artisanal skill of craft production, or the logic of applied science). It has always been the case for humans that many workers begin their working lives lacking any special level of skill or experience. (In the past two centuries, education has become more important and more widely disseminated; but even today, not everyone can know everything, or have experience in a great number of occupations.) It has also always been the case that there was a large amount of manual labour to be done; and that much of it was simple enough to be successfully (if not masterfully) done by unskilled or semiskilled workers, which has meant that there have always been plenty of people with the potential to do it. These conditions have assured the correlation's strength and persistence.
Throughout human prehistory and history, wherever social class systems have developed, the social status of manual labourers has, more often than not, been low, as most physical tasks were done by peasants, serfs, slaves, indentured servants, wage slaves, or domestic servants. For example, legal scholar L. Ali Khan analyses how the Greeks, Hindus, English, and Americans all created sophisticated social structures to outsource manual labour to distinct classes, castes, ethnicities, or races.
The phrase "hard labour" has even become a legal euphemism for penal labour, which is a custodial sentence during which the convict is not only confined but also put to manual work. Such work may be productive, as on a prison farm or in a prison kitchen, laundry, or library; may be completely unproductive, with the only purpose being the effect of the punishment on the convict; or somewhere in between (such as chain gang work, treadwheel work, or the proverbial "breaking rocks"—the latter two of which are almost certain to be economically unproductive today, although they sometimes served economic purpose in the preindustrial past).
There has always been a tendency among people of the higher gradations of social class to oversimplify the [partial] correlation between manual labour and lack of skill (or need for skill) into one of equivalence, leading to dubious exaggerations such as the notion that anyone who worked physically could be identified by that very fact as being unintelligent or unskilled, or that any task requiring physical work must (by that very fact) be simplistic and not worthy of analysis (or of being done by anyone with intelligence or social rank). Given the human cognitive tendency toward rationalisation, it is natural enough that such grey areas (partial correlations) have often been warped into absolutes (black and white thinking) by people seeking to justify and perpetuate their social advantage.
Throughout human existence, but most especially since the Age of Enlightenment, there have been logically complementary efforts by intelligent workers to counteract these flawed oversimplifications. For example, the American and French Revolutions rejected notions of inherited social status (aristocracy, nobility, monarchy), and the labour movements of the 19th and 20th centuries led to the formation of trade unions who enjoyed substantial collective bargaining power for a time. Such counteractive efforts have been all the more difficult because not all social status differences and wealth differences are unfair; meritocracy is a part of real life, just as rationalisation and unfairness are.
Social systems of every ideological persuasion, from Marxism to syndicalism to the American Dream, have attempted to achieve a successfully functioning classless society in which honest, productive manual labourers can have every bit of social status and power that honest, productive managers can have. Humans have not yet succeeded in instantiating any such utopia, but some social systems have been designed that go far enough toward the goal that hope yet remains for further improvement.
At its highest extreme, the rationalised distortion by economic elites produces cultures of slavery and complete racial subordination, such as slavery in ancient Greece and Rome; slavery in the United States; or slavery under Nazism (which was defeated in 1945). Concepts such as the Three-fifths compromise and the Untermensch defined slaves as less than human.
In the middle of the spectrum, such distortion may produce systems of fairly rigid class stratification, usually rationalised with fairly strong cultural norms of biologically inherited social inequality, such as feudalism; traditional forms of aristocracy and monarchy; colonialism; and caste systems (e.g., Apartheid, separate but equal/Jim Crow, Indian caste). One interesting historical trend that is true of all of the systems above is that they began crumbling in the 20th century and have continued crumbling since. Today's forms of them are mostly greatly weakened compared to past generations' versions.
At the lowest extreme, such distortion produces subtler forms of racism and de facto (but not de jure) inequality of opportunity. The more plausible the deniability, the easier the rationalisation and perpetuation. For example, as inequality of opportunity and racism grow smaller and subtler, their appearance may converge toward that of meritocracy, to the point that valid instances of each can be found extensively intermingled. At such areas of the spectrum, it becomes ever harder to justify efforts that use de jure methods to fight de facto imbalances (such as affirmative action), because valid instances can be highlighted by all sides. On one side, the cry is ongoing oppression (ignored or denied) from above; on the other side, the cry is reverse discrimination; ample valid evidence exists for both cases, and the problem of its anecdotal nature leaves no clear policy advantage to either side. A la mayoría de los puntos de interés puede llegarse cómodamente a pie, recorriendo sus paseos y ejes peatonales. Otra fórmula con creciente aceptación es el uso de la bicicleta, para la que existe una red de 'bidegorris' (carriles-bici).
El esplendor de San Sebastián durante la 'Belle Epoque', cuando era lugar de veraneo de la aristocracia europea, ha dejado hermosas construcciones, como el Gran Casino (actual Ayuntamiento), el Palacio de Miramar, residencia veraniega de la Corte, o los puentes sobre el río Urumea. Anteriores son las casas de la Parte Vieja, repleta de bares y restaurantes, donde es palpable la pasión local por la gastronomía en todas sus manifestaciones.

Because the Cantabrian Sea is almost a donostiarra more. The city has around the Bay of La Concha, protected from waves around the island of Santa Clara and embraced by the Urgull and Igueldo mountains. The changing colors of the bay bordered by the beaches of La Concha and Ondarreta always dazzle, with rain, clouds or with sunshine.
‘Het Binnenhof’ has been the political heart of the Netherlands for centuries. In the center of the oldest section of The Hague is the Binnenhof - the Inner Court - an irregular group of buildings constructed around a large central courtyard. With its origins dating back to 1250 and tied to the building of a castle, it soon became the residence of the ruling aristocracy and today houses both chambers of Parliament. The most important buildings of the complex are the exquisite Ridderzaal, or Knights' Hall, still used for functions and receptions, and in the North Wing, the chamber is the official residence of the Prime Minister. Also important are the Rolzaal court house dating from 1511 and the Lairessezaal with its 17th-century paintings by Gerard de Lairesse. Other highlights include the First Chamber, notable for its painted medallions depicting statesmen and the portrait of King William II under the country's coat of arms. The Second Chamber - the legislative authority that watches over the government - sat in the former ballroom from 1815 until 1992.

It is the oldest seaside spa in continental Europe. Heiligendamm is part of the town Bad Doberan in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and historically belongs to Mecklenburg.
The cluster of resort architecture mansions and spa buildings at the seafront are reminders of the glory days when this part of the Baltic Sea was one of the playgrounds of Europe's aristocracy
As I wandered through the Ogyen Choling Palace Museum in Bhutan's Tang Valley, I felt like I had been transported back in time to the 17th to 19th centuries when the Bhutanese aristocracy lived their lives. Our guide through the four-story museum was Kunzang Choden, the current curator and a 20th generation descendant of the original family. The artifacts on display were fascinating and provided a glimpse into Bhutan's rich culture and history. It was evident that the family took great pride in preserving their country's heritage.In the museum's courtyard, I was delighted to see the kitchen staff all dressed up in their "traditional Sunday outfit" and happy to pose for a group portrait - Ogyen Choling Palace Museum, Tang Valley, Bhutan.

As neuroses go, it's probably not among the most damaging that a poor tortured soul might have to endure. In fact, considering everything that ails humankind these days I probably shouldn't mention it at all. But here's the thing. I hate my name. Always have done since I was old enough to master all three syllables. And don't tell me it's a nice name. It doesn't matter whether you think it is or not, because as the person who has to live with it, it's on my birth certificate, my driving licence and my passports (both British and Irish) and I detest it with a passion. During the early years of my working life I'd give my name to somebody over the phone and then have to spell out every single letter. One builder whose accounts I was given to work on called me “Sebastian” instead. Which sounded quite ridiculous in a West Cornwall accent. He thought it was hilarious, and he was the customer so I had to grin politely and put up with it. Whenever I say my name it sounds as if I'm a very minor member of the aristocracy. An impoverished fourth son of the baron of a dried up salt marsh who stopped receiving invitations to an audience with the king in the early 1950’s. Nowadays, only people who've known me forever call me Dominic. Generally speaking that's my parents, although my sister often slips into it. She's also had three syllables dumped on her. Rebecca, but only Mum, who remains insistent on this nonsense, calls her that. Everyone else has always called her Becky. My brother is kinder and calls me Dom unless he's in a playful mood and wants to annoy me. As you’ll read later, he got away lightly.
I dropped the “inic” many years ago and anyone who has come into my orbit over the last twenty years simply knows me as Dom. My closest friends only know me as Dom, because that's what I told them my name was when I met them for the first time. “Dom” I can deal with, even though it's often misheard as John or Tom, or mistyped as Don. Once in Barcelona I told the waitress I was “Domingo.” It was the only way to avoid confusion. As for “Dominic,” hardly anyone could spell that correctly. There'd be a K on the end, or two many O's and not enough ‘I's. Or all of those things. One secretary where I worked in my twenties always called me Dominique. Spelt it that way on Christmas cards too. Even though I love France, I'm not French. In the same workplace, an IT consultant spent a few weeks with us and was introduced to me as Nic. It was only when he had to put his full name on a form that I realised we had the same first name. He obviously hated Dominic too, but had been rather more inventive than me at throwing the nomenclature pedants off the scent. Why hadn't I thought of Nic? That would have been much better. Although I suppose everyone would still have added a K on the end. Later on, a cleaner who was hovering on the brink of retirement became convinced my name was Duncan. “Alright Duncan?” she’d chirp squeakily as she came in to empty the bins at the end of each day. I’ve really no idea where she’d got Duncan from, and before long, it was too late to disabuse her. To her, I’d always be Duncan. My colleagues loved this. As for my surname, don't even go there. It's Haughton, not Houghton or Horton or any similar version of events. Hardly anyone gets that right first time. Almost everyone says it wrong too. Even people who've known me for years pronounce it wrongly. I've been on many adventures with Lee, and he still pronounces it Howton. But it's Horton. Spelt Haughton. With an A and only one O, and definitely no R's. Keeping up? Can you see why it drives me around the bend? Told you it was a pain to live with. I've been dealing with this for nearly sixty flipping years!
Three syllables for goodness sake. Nobody needs three syllables in a forename. It's one too many. When I was four and a half, my brother came along. I was not impressed at having to share my parents with anyone else, and to add insult to injury they called him David. Why couldn't I have been called David, like David was? I protested bitterly and begged our parents to call me David too, but they heartlessly ignored me. I was stuck with Dominic, no matter how much I detested those three syllables. And he can be abbreviated to Dave. Everyone hears and spells Dave correctly. Nobody says, “come again, was that Wade?” Or “pleased to meet you Gabe!” You couldn't possibly get it wrong.
“So why bring all of this up now?” is a question you might be asking. Well at the time of writing, and after a few days in Cork catching up with my family, I'm on the west coast of Ireland, on the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry to be exact. Kerry. That’s another name you can’t really get wrong. Staying in a cottage where the host greeted me as Dom. “A good place to write,” as my cousin Fiona pointed out. She's the only one of eight siblings with a triple syllable by the way. But really, Fiona is more like two and a bit as you can merge the vowels almost seamlessly. All eight of my Irish cousins, and my aunt and uncle, being among the people who've known me longest on this planet, call me Dominic, pretty much without exception. I've been Dominic for four days now. But the strange thing is, I don't mind it so much when they say it. Something about the easy stretching of the vowels and the gentle Cork lilt that makes me sound like the strange Cornish cousin that I am, rather than the landed gentry at the big house in Midleton where my Great Grandfather worked as head gardener over a hundred years ago. They all have that same twinkle about them that Grandad did too. But when you breathe in a landscape like this on a daily basis, it’s no wonder really. It’s a rare place this.
I'm here today and tomorrow, and then I'm back to Cork where I'll become Dominic again for a couple of days until I land back in Cornwall early next week. When I’m home, I’ll be Dom - so don’t get any ideas. Not unless you’re Irish that is. Especially if you’re from Cork. Then, just maybe, I might just let you get away with it without pulling a face that tells you what I really think about those three dreaded syllables.

Although since 1293, Alcalá had a General Study approved by King Sancho IV, the University of Alcalá was founded by the Regent of Spain, Cardinal Cisneros, in 1499 as an absolutely new educational project. In it the best models of the tradition of that time - Paris and Salamanca - were reconciled with those more innovative ones such as Bologna and Leuven. Cardinal Cisneros wanted this University, which was born with the Modern age as advanced in Spain of the Renaissance and humanist currents of Europe, to be the crucible where not only the regular and secular clergy willing to face the ecclesiastical reform, but also the competent new officials needed by the kingdoms of Spain. The success of that company made Alcalá become the headquarters of a university aristocracy that made our Golden Age possible. The uniqueness of the university model, the historical contribution to literature and science, the beauty and richness of its buildings made It is possible that on December 2, 1998, UNESCO declared the University of Alcalá, a World Heritage Site

Wilson Castle

"The castle’s construction began in 1885, as instructed by Doctor & Lady Johnson. Doctor Johnson was a Vermonter who went to England to study medicine. While there he met & married a wealthy lady of the aristocracy. After 7 and a half years of planning and construction the castle was completed at the sum of $1,300,000. The Johnson’s remained in the castle for only a brief time.
From the 1880’s until 1939, the castle was bought & sold numerous times. In 1939, a radio engineer named Herbert Lee Wilson, came to Vermont. He was a pioneer in the AM radio field and built radio stations all over the world. He was looking for a new location to build another station and a summer home for his family. He purchased the estate and the history of Wilson’s Castle officially starts. In the early 1940’s, Col. Wilson was noted for his engineering and radio work in Vermont. He designed radio station WHWB, owned by the Wilson’s and Charles Bates through the Central Vermont Broadcasting Corporation. Other radio work included WSYB in Rutland, Vermont which had the first directional antenna in the state of Vermont. Col. Wilson also provided engineering on WCAX channel 3 television station in Burlington, Vermont.
When America joined WWII in 1941, Herbert Wilson joined the Army Signal Corps, from which he retired in the 1950’s as rank of Colonel. He retired to the castle, and in 1962, opened it for tours. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 82 and left the estate to his daughter, Blossom Wilson Davine Ladabouche. Blossom passed away in 2010 and currently her daughter Denise Davine is the owner/operator."
Place des Vosges, inaugurated in 1612 with a grand carrousel to celebrate the engagement of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, is a prototype of the residential squares of European cities that were to come. What was new about the Place Royale in 1612 was that the housefronts were all built to the same design, probably by Jean Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau,[1] of red brick with strips of stone quoins over vaulted arcades that stand on square pillars. The steeply-pitched blue slate roofs are pierced with discreet small-paned dormers above the pedimented dormers that stand upon the cornices. Only the north range was built with the vaulted ceilings that the “galleries” were meant to have. Two pavilions that rise higher than the unified roofline of the square center the north and south faces and offer access to the square through triple arches. Though they are designated the Pavilion of the King and of the Queen, no royal has ever lived in the aristocratic square, except for Anne of Austria in the Pavilion de la Reine, for a short while. Place des Vosges initiated subsequent developments of Paris that created a suitable urban background for the French aristocracy and nobility.
The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury, (commonly known as Tewkesbury Abbey), in the English county of Gloucestershire, is a parish church and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.
Tewkesbury had been a centre for worship since the 7th century, becoming a priory in the 10th. The present building was started in the early 12th century. It was unsuccessfully used as a sanctuary in the Wars of the Roses. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became the parish church for the town. George Gilbert Scott led Restoration in the late 19th century. The church and churchyard within the abbey precincts includes tombs and memorials to many of the aristocracy of the area.
Services have been high church but now include Parish Eucharist, choral Mass and Evensong. These are accompanied by one of the church's three organs and choirs. There is a ring of twelve bells, hung for change ringing.
in my city Wiesbaden we have the annual "Nacht der Museen" - an evening/night event of many galleries.
And it is a fine tradition, that a number of 80-110 oldtimers is ready to transport the visitors for free in a circuit to the galleries.
So you are lucky to see a lot of fine old cars, and maybe even more lucky to get driven to a gallery in your dream car...

I describe this photographic series (with some “poetic license” on the theme of “beach photography”) by quoting an introduction I wrote some time ago, for a photographic series of mine having the same theme today. I would like to focus on two photos from the current series, on how, from a particular situation, in this case photographic, others can arise, I would like to share this with those who are not too bored reading this story: I photographed a young girl while she was reading a book, she was sitting inside one of the many lava formations present along the shore of Naxos (near Taormina), dug with a perfectly rounded shape (this suggests that their origin is man-made, I will not dwell on the hypothesis that attempts to explain these ancient formations), the little water collected inside these "pools" certainly gave a little refreshment to the unaware "reader", once at home, curiosity pushed me to investigate what she was reading, the high resolution of the photos allowed me to easily read the two pages of the book she was holding in her hand, and it was a kind of revelation, some paragraphs of the book, and I was more and more intrigued, about what the book was and its Author, a A quick Google search, and I found what I was looking for. The book is titled "Something Wonderful Always Happens." Its author is Gianluca Gotto. I didn't know him, but I was able to watch and listen to him on YouTube. I found it extremely interesting. I've already ordered the book on Amazon. I'll just quote a short excerpt from the page the reader was reading. It's brief, as I don't want to infringe on any copyright: "(...) do you know what the three poisons of man are according to Buddhism?" I shook my head. "Greed, or the desire to always have more when each of us already has everything we need; ignorance, or the lack of awareness: believing that life is different from what it is here and now; and finally, anger, a condition contrary to any form of happiness."
Beach holidays were born in the 1700s in Great Britain, this social phenomenon was born in which bathers for the first time go to the beaches, certainly not as sunny as those bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, they are fully dressed; this "new fashion" is also encouraged by the belief of English doctors since the beginning of the eighteenth century (starting around 1720), that breathing the brackish sea air and bathing in cold sea water is healthy, invigorates the body and cure lung diseases (conviction even more strengthened by the discovery of oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier in 1778, which led to the greater diffusion and conviction of the theories on the health benefits of sea air, which was thought to be more oxygenated and pure), these theories push many people from Northern Europe suffering from severe lung diseases to spend long periods in southern Europe, often in the south of Italy, this explains why characters with extraordinary qualities come to Taormina to cure their tuberculosis. The photographer baron Wilhelm von Gloeden and the English lady Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan had the seawater brought with their mules from Isola Bella, but while W. Von Gloeden heated the sea water, the English noblewoman Lady Trevelian did not heat it, mindful of the teachings of the English medical school, this will cause her death from bronchopneumonia on 4 October 1907 (see my previous "photographic stories" about Taormina). In fact, "thalassotherapy" was born in Great Britain, together with the social and cultural phenomenon of frequenting bathing beaches (before the beginning of the 18th century, the sea and its beaches were lived, except for reasons of trade and fishing, in a dark and negative way, from the sea often came very serious dangers such as the sudden landings of ferocious pirates, or foreigners carrying very serious diseases could land). An important photographer, who probably inspired subsequent photographers, was Tony Ray-Jones, who died prematurely in 1972, at the young age of 30, who was trying to create a “photographic memory” of the stereotypes of the English people; the famous photojournalist Martin Parr, who, although inspired by the previous one, differs from it for his way of doing “social satire” with his goal; finally, I would like to mention David Hurn and Simon Roberts, the latter with wider-ranging photographs, with photographs more detached from the individual. In Italy there are numerous photographers (I will mention only a few) who have made in their long career images captured in seaside resorts (generally we speaking of "beach photography" similar to "street photography"), photographs that are often unique in their style, such as that adopted by Franco Fontana, I mention Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (of whom I am honored to have known him personally), and Massimo Vitali, famous photographer (understood by some as "the photographer of the beaches"), especially for his beautiful photographs taken on the beaches (but not only), thanks to the presence of elevated fixed structures as a kind of mezzanine, built specifically in the bathing beaches for the realization of his photographs. This is my introduction to talk about the theme proposed here, that of “beach photography” (with some exceptions for “narrative” reasons), with a series of photographs taken on the beaches surrounding Taormina (Sicily). ……………………………………………………………
Descrivo questa serie fotografica (con qualche “licenza poetica” sul tema della “beach photography”) riportando una mia introduzione scritta po’ di tempo fa, per una mia serie fotografica avente lo stesso tema odierno. Desidero soffermarmi su due foto dell’attuale serie, di come, da una particolare situazione, in questo caso fotografica, ne possano scaturire altre, desidero condividere ciò con chi non si annoi troppo nel leggere questo racconto: ho fotografato a sua insaputa una giovane ragazza mentre leggeva un libro, era seduta all’interno di una delle tante formazioni laviche presenti lungo il bagnasciuga di Naxos (vicino Taormina), scavate con forma perfettamente rotondeggiante (questo fa pensare che la loro origine sia manufatta, non mi dilungo sulla ipotesi che tenta di spiegare queste antiche formazioni), la poca acqua raccolta all’interno di queste “vasche” davano certamente un po’ di refrigerio alla inconsapevole “lettrice” , una volta a casa, la curiosità mi ha spinto ad indagare su cosa stesse leggendo, l’elevata risoluzione delle foto mi ha consentito di leggere con facilità le due pagine del libro da lei tenuto in mano, ed è stata una specie di rivelazione, qualche trafiletto del libro, ed ero sempre più incuriosito, su quale fosse il libro ed il suo Autore, una breve ricerca su Google, ed ho trovato quanto cercavo, il libro si intitola “Succede sempre qualcosa di meraviglioso”, il suo Autore è Gianluca Gotto, non lo conoscevo, su You Tube ho potuto vederlo ed ascoltarlo, l’ho trovato estremamente interessante, il libro l’ho già ordinato su Amazon; riporterò qui solo un breve trafiletto preso dalla pagina che stava leggendo la lettrice, breve, non vorrei incorrere in qualche violazione sui diritti d’Autore: “ (…) sai quali sono i tre veleni dell’uomo secondo il Buddhismo ?” Scossi la testa. “La cupidigia, ovvero il desiderio di avere sempre di più quando ognuno di noi ha già tutto ciò che gli serve; l’ignoranza, ovvero la mancanza di consapevolezza: credere che la vita sia diversa da ciò che è qui e ora; infine la rabbia, una condizione contraria a ogni forma di felicità.”
Le vacanze al mare nascono nel ‘700 in Gran Bretagna, nasce questo fenomeno sociale nel quale i bagnanti per la prima volta si recano sulle spiagge, non certo assolate come quelle bagnate dal mar Mediterraneo, sono completamente vestiti; questa “nuova moda” è anche incoraggiata dalla convinzione dei medici inglesi fin dall’inizio del ‘700 (a partire dal 1720 circa), che respirare l’aria salmastra del mare e fare il bagno nell’acqua marina fredda sia salutare, rinvigorisca il corpo e curi le malattie polmonari (convinzione ancor più rafforzata dalla scoperta dell’ossigeno da parte di Antoine Lavoisier nel 1778, che portò alla maggiore diffusione e convinzione delle teorie sui benefici per la salute dell’aria di mare, che si pensava essere più ossigenata e pura), queste teorie spingono molte persone del Nord Europa affette da gravi malattie polmonari a trascorrere dei lunghi periodi nel sud Europa, spesso nel meridione d’Italia, questo spiega perché a Taormina giungono personaggi dalle qualità straordinarie per curare il proprio “mal sottile”, il barone fotografo Wilhelm von Gloeden e la lady inglese Florence Trevelyan Trevelyan si facevano portare coi muli l’acqua di mare proveniente dall’Isola Bella, però mentre W. Von Gloeden riscaldava l’acqua marina, la nobildonna inglese lady Trevelian non la riscaldava, memore degli insegnamenti della scuola medica inglese, questo causerà la sua morte per broncopolmonite il 4 ottobre del 1907 (vedi i miei precedenti “racconti fotografici” su Taormina). Infatti la “talassoterapia” nasce in Gran Bretagna, insieme al fenomeno sociale e culturale della frequentazione dei lidi balneari (prima dell’inizio del ‘700, il mare e le sue spiagge erano vissuti, tranne che per motivi di commercio e di pesca, in maniera oscura e negativa, dal mare spesso provenivano gravissimi pericoli come gli sbarchi improvvisi di feroci pirati, oppure potevano sbarcare stranieri portatori di gravissime malattie). Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate sulle spiagge circostanti Taormina (Sicilia).

Shōren-in (青蓮院) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Also known as the Awata Palace, it was built in the late 13th century. Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu pure land sect, was ordained a monk at Shōren-in at the age of nine.
Shōren-in was formerly the temple of the imperial abbot of the Tendai headquarters on Mount Hiei; the abbot was required to be chosen from the imperial family or high court aristocracy. After the Great Kyoto Fire of 1788, it was used as a temporary imperial palace. The main hall was rebuilt in 1895.
The temple complex contains a garden with massive eight-hundred-year-old camphor trees (kusunoki), and a pond filled with large stones and fed by a small waterfall. (Wikipedia)
Lowther Castle, which was home to 'the yellow earl' - a member of the aristocracy who liked the colour yellow and spent the family fortune on yellow cars, golden retrievers and chesnut horses. And booze, cigars and affairs. So much did he spend that the castle fell into ruin, but is now open again for visitors.
I've revisited a shot I took a few years ago having learned a few techniques since then - RAW for a start.
This is the Millennium Bridge, London, viewed from the south bank of The River Thames in front of Tate Modern. It opened in June 2000 to mark the new millennium but famously those first using it discovered that it swung as they crossed. As they subconsciously fell into step with the swing (actually, as it lurched ever so slightly, the pedestrians instinctively lurched with it to maintain their balance), the amplitude increased in exactly the same way as applying a gentle push to a child on a swing at just the right time is found surprisingly effective given the effort applied. This effect, which physicists call resonant frequency, is considered to be (ahem) unhelpful with regard to bridges. Indeed, columns of marching troops may be instructed to break step as they cross a bridge lest they cause a collapse which dumps them into whatever lies beneath. Clearly something had to be done so the bridge closed for a couple of years while the boffins sorted it out. Today, when used to cross The Thames from the south, it provides a spectacular, processional approach to Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, especially after sunset.
The original then 500 year old St Paul's was destroyed during The Great Fire of London in 1666. This is the replacement, Sir Christopher being appointed its architect in 1673 and knighted the day after accepting his commission. Although it may appear traditional to 21st Century eyes, his design was considered radical and had to amended. However, he obtained King Charles II's permission to make "variations, rather ornamental than essential" so he pretty much went with his original design after all. Its most obvious feature - the dome - is very similar to St Peter's Basilica in Rome, the seat of The Pope. That was controversial in England a little over a Century after King Henry VIII had split the country from catholic Rome, placing himself as head of the new Church of England. The design was decided upon within living memory of The Gunpowder Plot.
To divert from St Paul's, The Gunpowder Plot involved a group of catholic conspirators intending to blow Parliament, King James I and much of the aristocracy sky high during the ceremonial state opening of Parliament on November 5th 1605. The plotters also had plans to kidnap other highly placed people, including Princess Elizabeth, daughter of His Majesty, who was to be installed as a puppet monarch, and they had stashed weapons to perform what today we'd call a coup d'etat. Had they succeeded England could have become ripe for the other European superpower, catholic Spain, to exploit. However, The Plot was betrayed resulting in 17th Century hitman Guy Fawkes being found in the cellars of Parliament alongside a very incriminating amount of gunpowder. It all ended very badly for him. About to be hung, drawn and quartered, he prematurely jumped from the scaffold, the noose breaking his neck, killing him instantly so depriving The State of the satisfaction of completing its gruesome sentence while he was still alive. The other principal plotters were killed or captured in a shootout in Staffordshire leading to heads finding themselves on spikes. The Plot caused Catholicism to be regarded at least with suspicion, even though His Majesty's response to those other than the plotters themselves was conciliatory rather than punitive, but even today a catholic may not become monarch.
The design of St Paul's invites speculation. Could its dome, being so similar to the catholic taste in architecture, hint at the private religious belief of its creator? He was a powerful man with influential friends such as Sir Isaac Newton and Robert Hooke. Was Sir Christopher using his greatest project to thumb his nose at The Establishment, implicitly challenging it to come after him if it dared? If so, he was playing a dangerous game, but whatever! I guess we'll never know. Perhaps he just liked domes.
Unusually for such a large project in those days, the architect lived to see it completed - officially Christmas Day 1711 - although construction actually continued for several more years. Sir Christopher died in 1723. He is buried in the crypt with his epitaph (translated from Latin) being "If you seek my monument, look around you." Quite.
The photo was taken at twilight on a glorious late spring evening, with just a little colour remaining in the sky.

This incipit of mine, to introduce the theme I have addressed, that of “beach photography” (with some exceptions for “narrative” reasons), with a series of photographs taken mostly on the beaches of the north-western Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, near the pleasant town of Diamante (municipality in the province of Cosenza), a town with a tourist vocation, famous for its notable and multiple murals. The portraits (and a couple of lovers) were captured in Giardini-Naxos. For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, in addition to capturing the surrounding space, it also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being blurry because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused-out of focus-imprecise-undecided... the Anglo-Saxon term that encapsulates this photographic genre in a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created later, in the post-production phase.

Nell’aristocrazia e nell’alta borghesia inglese di allora nasce così la moda di trascorrere le vacanze al mare, successivamente l’abitudine di andare al mare si diffonde a tutti i livelli della società, le ferrovie che furono costruite in tutta la Gran Bretagna all’inizio dell’Ottocento, resero i viaggi verso l’oceano accessibili anche per i ceti più bassi, quelli più popolari e meno agiati, anch’essi frequenteranno le località balneari, Blackpool diviene la prima località balneare della Gran Bretagna completamente frequentata dalle classi popolari grazie alla presenza di stabilimenti balneari a basso costo; il grande e definitivo boom del turismo balneare si avrà poi negli anni ’50 e ’60. Stando così le cose, non ci si deve meravigliare nel sapere che in Gran Bretagna le spiagge sono più frequentate di quanto istintivamente si possa pensare a causa di un clima ben diverso da quello Mediterraneo, e che questo fenomeno socio-culturale sia stato indagato a livello fotografico da parte di fotografi della stessa Gran Bretagna, di questi cito quattro nomi. Un importante fotografo, che probabilmente ispirò i successivi fotografi, fu Tony Ray-Jones, scomparso prematuramente nel 1972, alla giovane età di 30 anni, il quale cercava di realizzare una “memoria fotografica” degli stereotipi del popolo inglese; il famoso fotoreporter Martin Parr, il quale pur ispirandosi al precedente, se ne differenzia per il suo modo di fare “satira sociale” col suo obiettivo; infine desidero menzionare David Hurn e Simon Roberts, quest’ultimo con fotografie di più ampio respiro, con fotografie più distaccate dal singolo individuo. In Italia numerosi sono i fotografi (ne cito solo qualcuno) che hanno realizzato nella loro lunga carriera immagini colte in località balneari (genericamente si parla di “beach photography” affine alla “street photography”), fotografie spesso uniche nel loro stile, come quello adottato da Franco Fontana, menziono Mimmo Jodice, Ferdinando Scianna (del quale mi onoro di averlo conosciuto personalmente), e Massimo Vitali, famoso fotografo (da alcuni inteso come “il fotografo delle spiagge”), soprattutto per le sue bellissime fotografie realizzate sui lidi (ma non solo), grazie alla presenza di strutture fisse sopraelevate a mò di soppalco, costruite appositamente nei lidi balneari per la realizzazione delle sue fotografie. Questo mio incipit, per introdurre il tema da me affrontato, quello della “beach photography” (con qualche eccezione per motivi ”narrativi”), con una serie di fotografie realizzate per la maggior parte sulle spiagge della costa tirrenica nord-occidentale della Calabria, nei pressi dell’ameno paese di Diamante (comune in provincia di Cosenza), paese a vocazione turistica, famoso per i suoi notevoli e molteplici murales. I ritratti (ed una coppia di innamorati) sono stati colti a Giardini-Naxos. Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione

The Mossman collection of horse drawn vehicles was given to Luton Museum Service in 1991. It illustrates the development of horse-drawn road transportation in Britain from Roman times up until the 1930.
It illustrates the life of tradesmen and ordinary people as well as the lives of the aristocracy. It's existence is owed to the enthusiastic collecting of a local man called George Mossman who was born in Caddington, Bedfordshire, in 1906.
Shortly after the First World War George Mossman left school to start work for Panter’s butchers on Park Street, Luton, as a butcher’s delivery van driver. He delivered meat to the people of Luton and surrounding villages. This began his life long interest in horse-drawn transport.
After running several successful businesses and a working farm he acquired a leasing company providing horse drawn carriages for special events such as weddings, carnivals and public occasions. George drove his carriages in the London’s Lord Mayors Show for 25 years and even had carriages and drivers as part of the present Queen’s Coronation procession.

The literal ”. In Muslim societies, it is a notion which defines intimatmeaning of the word harem in Arabic language is, “a holy place that everyone is not allowed to entere family life. In Ottoman tradition, the word "Harem" was used in two different senses. First, "the sultan's harem" i.e. his family, and the second meaning would have referred to the space where his family lived. Besides constituting the core of the dynasty, the palace harem forming a wing of the cadre of sultan’s household officials recruited via devshirme (devşirme) - a system of recruitment of youngsters of foreign background for serving the Ottoman Empire - was also an environment serving the purpose of creating a sound state aristocracy by wedding the concubines having received a disciplined education to the recruit-aghas (squires) who had been thoroughly educated and trained at the Palace’s Enderûn School.
The Topkapı Palace Harem was the living space of the Sultan, the Queen Mother, the sultan’s women, children, brothers and sisters and servants and concubines and Black Eunuchs who were the protectors of the Harem. This set of structures, which constituted the private and prohibited space of the Ottoman dynasty, underwent a constant evolution from the 16th until the beginning of the 19th century, displaying a great variety of building styles changing with each period, hence forming an extremely important and interesting complex from the point of view of architectural history. Expanded in time through the additions made by each sultan, the Topkapı Palace Harem today consists of about 300 rooms, 9 baths, 2 mosques, 1 hospital, 1 laundry, and numerous wards of different kinds.
The living spaces of all the service groups integrated within the institutionalization system of the Harem were gathered around a common courtyard. The fact that the pebble stone walking path ends at the Fireplace Chamber constituting the entrance to the private quarters of the Sultan, highlights the sovereign’s itinerary.

A provincially Registered Historic Structure, Holy Trinity's 19th century stone construction makes it a rarity among outport village churches which are otherwise mostly made of wood.
Built between 1863-65 in the Neo-gothic style, this is the third church on the site. Ferryland is, in fact, considered to be the first place in British North America where an English-speaking Catholic priest said mass. The village was established in 1621 by Sir George Calvert, who'd been granted a Royal Charter giving him absolute power to develop a new colony along the Newfoundland coast (which he called Avalon). Unlike the majority of the British aristocracy, however, Calvert (a closet Catholic himself) skirted existing Penal Laws banning the religion and allowed for Catholics to settle his lands - even paying the passage of two priests, travelling incognito, to minister to them.
His experience here, and his ability to ingratiate himself with influential nobility and even royalty, subsequently led him to obtain a second Charter to colonise land further south, which he diplomatically dubbed Maryland in honour of the reigning Queen...

"The castle’s construction began in 1885, as instructed by Doctor & Lady Johnson. Doctor Johnson was a Vermonter who went to England to study medicine. While there he met & married a wealthy lady of the aristocracy. After 7 and a half years of planning and construction the castle was completed at the sum of $1,300,000. The Johnson’s remained in the castle for only a brief time.
From the 1880’s until 1939, the castle was bought & sold numerous times. In 1939, a radio engineer named Herbert Lee Wilson, came to Vermont. He was a pioneer in the AM radio field and built radio stations all over the world. He was looking for a new location to build another station and a summer home for his family. He purchased the estate and the history of Wilson’s Castle officially starts. In the early 1940’s, Col. Wilson was noted for his engineering and radio work in Vermont. He designed radio station WHWB, owned by the Wilson’s and Charles Bates through the Central Vermont Broadcasting Corporation. Other radio work included WSYB in Rutland, Vermont which had the first directional antenna in the state of Vermont. Col. Wilson also provided engineering on WCAX channel 3 television station in Burlington, Vermont.
When America joined WWII in 1941, Herbert Wilson joined the Army Signal Corps, from which he retired in the 1950’s as rank of Colonel. He retired to the castle, and in 1962, opened it for tours. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 82 and left the estate to his daughter, Blossom Wilson Davine Ladabouche. Blossom passed away in 2010 and currently her daughter Denise Davine is the owner/operator."
Shōren-in (青蓮院) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Also known as the Awata Palace, it was built in the late 13th century. Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu pure land sect, was ordained a monk at Shōren-in at the age of nine.
Shōren-in was formerly the temple of the imperial abbot of the Tendai headquarters on Mount Hiei; the abbot was required to be chosen from the imperial family or high court aristocracy. After the Great Kyoto Fire of 1788, it was used as a temporary imperial palace. The main hall was rebuilt in 1895.
The temple complex contains a garden with massive eight-hundred-year-old camphor trees (kusunoki), and a pond filled with large stones and fed by a small waterfall. (Wikipedia)

in my city Wiesbaden we have the annual "Nacht der Museen" - an evening/night event of many galleries.
And it is a fine tradition, that a number of 80-110 oldtimers is ready to transport the visitors for free in a circuit to the galleries.
So you are lucky to see a lot of fine old cars, and maybe even more lucky to get driven to a gallery in your dream car...

This magnificent 20,000-square-foot mansion was built in 1899-1901 for self-made millionaire and Senator George Taylor Fulford I (1852-1905) and his family. The house was designed by noted American architect Albert W. Fuller, with landscaping design by the prestigious Olmsted Brothers firm.
