“True aristocracy is in being a nomad, those who settle lose their lineage.”

In the 1880s, Dinard was the first seaside resort in France, it was in its golden age. Dinard brings together the aristocracy, political figures and intellectuals from across the continent. It is a cosmopolitan population which mixes with the early English colony. The British presence can be seen through the villas with bow windows, the parks and the English gardens.

The fortress Grünwald is probably a hidden gem of Munich. It is located in the most expensive and luxurious district of Munich and surrounded by mansions and villas of footballs stars, millionaires, CEOs of several major German corporations and old aristocracy with some money :-)

The fortress got its current shape in 15th century. It was used as a country residence of Bavarian dukes, later as hunting lodge, powder magazine and VIP state prison (apparently not a very harsh one, though - all the prisoners either escaped or got their freedom back quite soon) Now the fortress belongs to the Free State of Bavaria and can be visited daily from 9 till 4 p.m.

The bridge below connects Grünwald with Pullach, the richest community in Germany :-)

Solyanka, one of the oldest streets in Moscow, the length of 534 meters; XVII century in the period of state monopoly on salt, on the street and located the royal Salt Yard, by which the street took its name.

Since the 17th century the street has been gradually built up houses. And from the 18th century on Solyanka starts to settle richest people.

After 1917, the spacious apartments of the Moscow aristocracy were settled by the new Soviet aristocracy -. Officials, artists, etc. However, the rooms were refurbished under the communal apartments.

Gradually Solyanka, like almost all the streets of Moscow, began to be built faceless houses, broke its historical flavor. However, there is still preserved old houses, in a single and entire ensembles.

Located on the dividing line between Springfield's Vinegar Hill and Old Aristocracy Hill neighborhoods is The H.P. Boult House. Constructed in 1888, the house is a remarkably intact and is one of the best examples of a simplified Queen Anne style of architecture with Eastlake ornamentation in Springfield. The interior of the home, like the exterior, is well preserved.

The house was built in 1888 by H.P. and Mary Boult. H.P. worked as a miller. In 1890 Mr. Boult died and in 1891 Mary Boult, his widow, sold the house to Thomas B. Watt. Six generations of the Watt family have occupied the house until its purchase in 1981 by Robert Hayner. Today the H.P. Boult House is the headquarters of The Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities.

The H.P. Boult House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

This magnificent 20,000-square-foot mansion was built in 1899-1901 for self-made millionaire and Senator George Taylor Fulford I (1852-1905) and his family. The house was designed by noted American architect Albert W. Fuller, with landscaping design by the prestigious Olmsted Brothers firm.

Fulford Place and its collection were donated to the Ontario Heritage Trust by the Fulford family in 1991. Many items from the family’s collection are exhibited in the house just as they were over 100 years ago. There was a young woman of high aristocracy, born to the landlord and his lady,

She fell madly in love with a man of higher standing from across the seven seas- a landlord who had achieved enormous might,

He loved her so much day and night,

He would run his fingers down her spine,

And he would chain her up with his love each night.

The charm of his smile blurred all of his lies,

And in the meantime, their love rose to great heights,

Their love story was famous worldwide.

But the young lady knew not that there was another woman from the downtown brothel,

Who had caught his eye with her coquettish behavior and vibe,

He made her his mistress,

And now, she was in his life,

One fine evening while the young lady was waiting for him at the table,

A news broke to her that he was with his mistress along the riverside,

That night, grievously she cried, cried, and cried,

She wrote a letter to his mistress,

And then finally he arrived,

Angrily, he told the young lady ''you are not right''

And left her in turmoil,

The young lady stood there numb and cold,

Gracefully carrying their defeated love in her soul,

The beauty of her despair spread worldwide,

They gossiped about her defeated love all the time,

In Spain, they say she is with that blond guy from up high,

Not true indeed,

Wearing a black gown,

The young lady still chants his name to this day,

Like a nightingale ablaze,

From her grave.

Live like the aristocracy. Who will not?:)

Castellina in Chianti

In possession of a great position in the middle of the Chianti region, we have Castellina. Confirming its glorious past, the massive Rocca (castle) stands proudly over the city. Walking through the small town you will notice many historical buildings that belonged to Florentine and Senese aristocracy.

The Church of S. Salvatore merits a visit; rebuilt after the Second World War, the church displays a beautiful late 14th-century fresco by a Tuscan master. In Castellina, you can taste wines in one of its various wine bars and the great, unforgettable taste of its many fresh and aged salami and cold cuts which have become an age-old art in Chianti and Tuscany.

The Howard K. Weber House is a historic house located in Springfield's historic Aristocracy Hill neighborhood, which is home to the Illinois Governor's Mansion, and was once populated by Springfield's upper-middle class and minor rich.

Howard K. Weber was born in Maryland and was attending Dickinson College in Pennsylvania when the Civil War broke out. He attempted to join the Confederate Army but was persuaded by his father to visit Springfield relatives. Here he became converted to the Northern cause and was appointed a Commissary Sergeant at Camp Butler, then a prisoner-of-war camp. (Note: The photo of the Illinois State Military Museum I recently posted is located at Camp Butler.)

In the post Civil War era Weber became president of one of Springfield's largest banks, the First National Bank. Springfield profited heavily from the wartime economy and experienced tremendous growth in the late 19th century. Weber's career and house reflect those times perfectly.

Weber purchased this house in 1878 when it was still a simple two-story brick, broadside house that had been built in the 1840s. As he prospered he began a series of extensive alterations which make the house a composite of the taste and aspirations of local citizens during the years from the Civil War to World War I. The basic facade, while Italianate in mass and detail, at the same time anticipates the trend toward heavily embellished late Victorian architecture. This shows particularly in the elaborate treatment of the front bay windows and Gothic elements in the drip moldings on the second floor east windows (shown here).

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Chateau Woolsack also known as The Woolsack is located near the town of Mimizan, in the Landes, on the banks of Lake Aureilhan.

It is a hunting lodge erected in 1911 by the Duke of Westminster, who was charmed by the region, both its coastline and the surrounding conntryside, where he liked to organize hunting parties.

The architecture of the building evokes the Tudor-style buildings that British settlers adopted in South Africa. The chateau takes its name from the residence of writer Rudyard Kipling in Cape Town, by the same architect.

In an area protected for its ecological wealth, the castle was a popular holiday resort of the European aristocracy, invited by the duke, but also celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Salvador Dalí or Charlie Chaplin.

A village of cosy bungalows to house servants was built in the park and Lady Grosvenor, aunt of the Duke of Westminster, installed in another area trailers for some guests, prefiguring luxury campsites.

Burned in 1947, the castle was rebuilt identically. Sold by the Duke of Westminster soon after, it is still privately owned today. It cannot be visited, but its surroundings can be a pleasant walk.

Today a ride through Forstenrieder Park, sunny but temps around 3°-4° C. This is the Yellow House, a service hut built in 1842. At that time the forest was largely a hunting ground for nobility and aristocracy.

This statue stands in the Jardins Biovès in Menton, France, a lush and meticulously maintained public garden located in the city center along Avenue Boyer. The statue visible is the “Monument to Queen Victoria”, commemorating her visit to Menton in 1882. The sculpture depicts Queen Victoria with a symbolic guardian angel by her side, paying homage to her significance and the role she played in popularizing the French Riviera as a winter destination among British aristocracy.

Surrounded by palm trees, rose-covered arches, and seasonal flower displays, the monument adds a regal historical touch to the tropical ambiance of the gardens. The setting, with the backdrop of the mountains and Belle Époque architecture, captures the elegance and timeless charm of Menton...

precedented visit path accompanies the scenes of the Olympic Theater, commissioned in February 1580 by the Olympic Academy, a congregation of important personalities from Vicenza in the field of literature, science and arts, of which Palladio himself was a partner. The project was inspired by the model of "ancient" theater, in the wake of the Renaissance rediscovery of Vitruvius' studies, and at the same time served as a self-celebrating place for the Vicenza aristocracy, inspired by the same classical ideals supported by the members of the Academy. The construction began in May 1580 but Palladio did not see the construction due to his sudden death. The Olimpico, after various and complex events, was completed five years later and was solemnly inaugurated on March 3, 1585 with the memorable staging of the Oedipus Tyrant of Sophocles.

Purple is a color intermediate between red and blue. It is similar to violet, but unlike violet, which is a spectral color with its own wavelength on the visible spectrum of light, purple is a composite color made by combining red and blue. According to surveys In Europe and the U.S., purple is the color most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery and piety. When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity and seduction.

Purple was the color worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial color worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Similarly in Japan, the color is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy.

The castle stands at the end of a rocky plateau forming a spur thanks to the presence of a natural fault. Dominating the country known as the land of the four rivers, it was the seat of an important barony from the Carolingian aristocracy of Quercy - the Castelnau de Bretenoux family - already in possession of a fortified residence in the vicinity in the 11th century. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle adopted its final configuration.

Venice is a city located on the numerous islands of Venetian Lagoon, inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a city of canals and most of the transport takes place by waterway. The most popular means of transport is a water tram.

More than a thousand years (726-1797), the city was the capital of Republic of Venice, one of maritime and commercial powers of the Mediterranean. The head of state was the doge of Venice (prince), theoretically irremovable, chosen by the municipal aristocracy. In 19th century, Venice was incorporated into the newly created Kingdom of Italy.

Venice, together with its monuments and a system of canals and bridges, form a unique urban complex on the list of world heritage of humanity.

The historical part of Venice is currently mainly tourist.

Sqattocracy,

Eventually the term ‘squatter’ came to refer to a person of high social prestige who grazes livestock on a large scale (whether the station was held by leasehold or freehold title). In Australia the term is still used to describe large landowners, especially in rural areas with a history of pastoral occupation. Hence the term, Squattocracy, a play on aristocracy.

The Palace, a complex of several connected and adjacent buildings and courtyards, was built by several generations on a wide artificial terrace during four century period. The Palace was used by the Mayan aristocracy for bureaucratic functions, entertainment, and ritualistic ceremonies. The Palace is located in the center of the ancient city.

Within the Palace there are numerous sculptures and bas-relief carvings that have been conserved. The Palace most unique and recognizable feature is the four-story tower known as The Observation Tower. The Observation Tower like many other buildings at the site exhibit a mansard-like roof. The A-shaped Corbel arch is an architectural motif observed throughout the complex. The Corbel arches require a large amount of masonry mass and are limited to a small dimensional ratio of width to height providing the characteristic high ceilings and narrow passageways. The Palace was equipped with numerous large baths and saunas which were supplied with fresh water by an intricate water system. An aqueduct, constructed of great stone blocks with a three-meter-high vault, deviates the Otulum River to flow underneath the main plaza. The Palace is the largest building complex in Palenque measuring 97 meters by 73 meters at its base.

The air of aristocracy has permeated this property through the ages. It’s located in Simsbury, Connecticut.

n the early Middle Ages, the reinforced castle of Poeke (Flanders - Belgium) served as a real bastion where knights from Flanders county assembled. The castle, which was the residence of the "Heren Van Poucke" ("Gentlemen of Poeke - mention the old-Dutch spelling of the word "Poeke") was at that time governed from Bruges. However, combative Ghent rebels repeatedly attacked the castle. Consequently, after the year 1453 Poeke castle felt into ruin for many years. One and a half century late, in 1597, the family Preud'homme d'Hailly from Rijsel (North of France) bought the castle from a family called "Delrye" and governed Poeke for more than 2 centuries. They made the castle the centre of their increasingly growing properties.

It was in the same year 1597 that heirs of this nobility introduced the title "Burggraven of Nieuwpoort" ("Viscounts of Nieuwpoort"). Although their cultural wealth was initially suppressed because of the 16th and 17th century wars, successive generations of viscounts led the Baronny of Poucques to a short, but uncontested peak in 1765. From 1762 up to 1774, Karel Florent Idesbald de Preudhomme was not onlyViscount of Nieuwpoort and Oombergen, Baron of Poeke, Sir of Axpoele, Neuville, Sint-Lievens-Esse, Velaines, etc., but also chamberlain of the Austrian king.

At that time, the kingdom of the Netherlands was governed by Austria and looked as a rigid and hierarchic society, where the aristocracy was able to maintain their privileges up to the French Revolution (1789). Even after the French-Napoleonic empire collapsed (1815) and after Belgium came into being (1830), the aristocracy could maintain its position as the high social class on the Flemish countryside.

The isolated location of Poeke, the steady decrease of the number of its inhabitants and the stable agricultural character of Poeke, which mainly consisted of farmsteads, all these reasons caused the aristocratic power system to continue to function until after the Second World War (1945).

In the second half of the 19th century, the family Preudhomme D'Hailly was once and for all past its peak and financial problems weakened its position inside as well as outside the village. As a consequence, they had to abandon the castle in 1872.

The family Pycke de Peteghem - which was raised to the peerage in 1730 - bought the castle and gradually dominated the small East-Flemish agricultural village. Its political representation mainly focused on the mayoralty, a position that was rarely assigned to someone who was not a member of the aristocratic family.

The castle largely survived both World Wars, but the aristocratic influence during the 20th century died out when the last Baroness of Poeke, Inès Pycke de Peteghem deceased (1955). The property structure of the castle changed for the last time in 1977, when Poeke fused with Aalter. From then on, the castle was owned by the community and became a public domain. Up to now, it is part of an extraordinary recreation facility.

Plas Newydd Coordinates.....Latitude: 53° 12' 9.36" N

Longitude: -4° 12' 57.60" W

Plas Newydd is a country house set in gardens, parkland and surrounding woodland on the north bank of the Menai Strait, in Llanddaniel Fab, near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales. The current building has its origins in 1470, and evolved over the centuries to become one of Anglesey's principal residences. Owned successively by Griffiths, Baylys and Pagets, it became the country seat of the Marquesses of Anglesey, and the core of a large agricultural estate. The house and grounds, with views over the strait and Snowdonia, are open to the public, having been owned by the National Trust since 1976.

The house site was first occupied in the 13th century, and was known as Llwyn-y-Moel. By 1470 it belonged to the Griffith family, who also owned Penrhyn Castle near Bangor. Gwilym ap Griffith had acquired substantial Anglesey holding from his marriage to Morfydd, daughter of Goronwy ap Tudur of Penmynydd. Robert Griffith built the earliest parts of the current house in the early 16th century, creating a hall-house.

The Menai Strait (Welsh: Afon Menai, the "river Menai") is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 25 km (16 mi) long, which separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales. It varies in width from 400 metres (1,300 ft) from Fort Belan to Abermenai Point to 1,100 metres (3,600 ft)

It's Academicos da Grande Rio, one of the top samba schools in Rio, that brought us to the Gamboa neighborhood. As soon as I stepped off the travel coach, my eyes went straight to these charming houses on the hill!

Oh how I wish tour operators would offer optional excursions of old neighborhood walk!!!!

"Gamboa was originally settled by the aristocracy, due to the attractive position on the shores of Guanabara Bay, but lost its glamour when the docks were built. It's known for its colonial buildings, many now housing cutting-edge concert venues and dance clubs. The neighborhood is also a samba music hotspot, and the pulsing beats can be heard at the Samba City complex, where Rio’s dance schools build elaborate floats and rehearse for Carnival. The vast AquaRio aquarium is also home to a surfing museum."

Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺, literally "Temple of the Golden Pavilion"), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺, lit. 'Deer Garden Temple'), is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. The temple belonged to a powerful statesman, Saionji Kintsune. Kinkaku-ji's history dates to 1397, when the villa was purchased from the Saionji family by shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and transformed into the Kinkaku-ji complex. After he died in 1408 by his will, his son converted it to a Zen temple.

It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955.

It is designated a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape. It is one of 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites.

Each floor of the Kinkaku-ji uses three different styles of architecture: shinden, samurai, and zen, specifically on each floor.

The first floor, called The Chamber of Dharma Waters (法水院, Hō-sui-in), is rendered in shinden-zukuri style, reminiscent of the residential style of the 11th century Heian imperial aristocracy. It is designed as an open space with adjacent verandas and uses natural, unpainted wood and white plaster. This helps to emphasize the surrounding landscape. The walls and fenestration also affect the views from inside the pavilion. Most of the walls are made of shutters that can vary the amount of light and air in the pavilion and change the view by controlling the shutters' heights. The second floor called The Tower of Sound Waves (潮音洞, Chō-on-dō ), is built in the style of warrior aristocrats, or buke-zukuri. On this floor, sliding wood doors and latticed windows create a feeling of impermanence. The second floor also contains a Buddha Hall and a shrine dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kannon. The third floor is built in traditional Chinese chán ( zen) style, known as zenshū-butsuden-zukuri. It is called the Cupola of the Ultimate (究竟頂, Kukkyō-chō).

Back to the 18th century...

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" the 26th of September is "reflection on black background". It was recently my birthday, and a very dear friend of mine gave me a Coalport bachelor’s coffee set which is hand painted with black stripes and dainty dots and curving lines, edged with a thin band of red. Unnamed, the pattern number is 7986. The china is so translucent, that you can see your shadow through it if you hold it to the light and place your finger between the light and the china’s edge. According to the backstamp, this set was made between 1891 and 1918, and it has that lovely look of Art Nouveau crossed with early Art Deco, and it looks lovely and striking reflected on a piece of mirror against a black velvet background. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

Coalport pottery was founded in Shropshire, England, by John Rose in 1795 and quickly became a leading producer of fine bone china, renowned for its intricate, hand-painted designs and innovative glazes, which were favoured by aristocracy and earned royal patronage. After several ownership changes and a move to Stoke-on-Trent in 1926, the company became part of the Wedgwood group in 1967, though its exquisite patterns, like "Indian Tree," remain highly collectible today.
