****This frame was chosen on March 28th 2014 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #155. This is my Twenty third photograph to be selected, which I am amazed and delighted by as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the amazing photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.
Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to everyone who visited, favourite and commented on the frame*****

Photograph taken in the height of a foggy golden hour around sunrise at 05:42am on Thursday 27th March 2014 in the grounds of Foots Cray Meadows. Here I am standing beside Five Arches Bridge over the River Cray in Bexley, Kent, England.
An early start and aborted destination due to very thick fog, which had me rerouting over to the lake in the hope of capturing the beauty and atmosphere of the morning.

Appearing within the boundless darkness of space in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope snapshot, NGC 34 looks more like an otherworldly, bioluminescent creature from the deep oceans than a galaxy. Lying in the constellation Cetus (the Sea Monster), the galaxy’s outer region appears almost translucent, pinpricked with stars and strange wispy tendrils.
The main cause for this galaxy’s odd appearance lies in its past. If we were able to reverse time by a few million years, we would see two beautiful spiral galaxies on a direct collision course. When these galaxies collided into one another, their intricate patterns and spiral arms were permanently disturbed. This image shows the galaxy's bright center, a result of this merging event that has created a burst of new star formation and lit up the surrounding gas. As the galaxies continue to intertwine and become one, NGC 34’s shape will become more like that of a peculiar galaxy, devoid of any distinct shape.
In the vastness of space, collisions between galaxies are quite rare events, but they can be numerous in mega-clusters containing hundreds or even thousands of galaxies.

A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it appear reptilian.
It is often seen standing with its wings held out to dry.
Regarded by some as black, sinister and greedy, cormorants are supreme fishers which can bring them into conflict with anglers and they have been persecuted in the past.

The palace appeared in 1901-1903 already under the great-grandson of N.S. Mordvinov Alexander Alexandrovich-the second. The heir of the count ordered the project of the building to the St. Petersburg civil engineer F. B. Nagel, and entrusted the construction to the architect O. E. Wegener. The Mordvinov Palace was built in the spirit of the Renaissance and resembles the Mediterranean villas of Italian nobles. The materials for the building were gray limestone and Gurzuf green sandstone.
Sadr appears as the "middle star" in the constellation Cygnus, as seen around midnight August 12-13, 2022.
(There is a full moon in the night sky that night also).
Notes about Sadr:
Sadr is among the brightest stars in the night sky.
Sadr is located at around 1,800 light-years out. It forms part of the Milky Way (Cygnus area).
Sadr is the second brightest star in the constellation of Cygnus, after Deneb.
Its location marks the intersection of the Northern Cross, a bright asterism that dominates the summer sky in the northern hemisphere.
Aruba, a small island in the Dutch Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela, has a dry climate, sunny beaches and gentle waves. Constant winds produce a cool breeze and tilt trees (like the famous divi-divi) to the southwest. The European influence appears in the architecture, characterized by the Dutch gables painted in tropical pastel tones. This is also evident in the coexistence of the local language, Papiamento, with English, Dutch and Spanish. The country does not have fresh water but it has desalinated water of excellent quality and you can safely drink tap water. The small country is a major producer and exporter of aloe vera (aloe vera) and is strong in the financial and fishing sectors, in addition to logistical services in the oil sector. It is a small island with a lot of sun and wind all the time, which favors the country's main economic activity, tourism. Its area is 179 km2 (69.1 mi2) and is densely populated by approximately 110,000 inhabitants (2020 Census) and has a per capita income of just over US$25,000 p.a. The country's capital is Oranjestad.

The city of Turenum appears for the first time in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a 13th-century copy of an ancient Roman itinerary. The name, also spelled Tirenum, was that of the Greek hero Diomedes. The city was later occupied by the Lombards and the Byzantines. First certain news of an urban settlement in Trani, however, trace back only to the 9th century.
The most flourishing age of Trani was the 11th century, when it became an episcopal see in place of Canosa, destroyed by the Saracens. Its port, well placed for the Crusades, then developed greatly, becoming the most important on the Adriatic Sea. In the year 1063 Trani issued the Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris, which is "the oldest surviving maritime law code of the Latin West". There was also Jewish community in Trani, which was under the protection of the king until it was given to the Archbishop Samarus during the reign of Henry VI at the end of the 12th century. In that period many great families from the main Italian Maritime Republics (Amalfi, Pisa, Genova and Venice) established themselves in Trani. Trani, in turn, maintained a consul in Venice from 12th century. The presence of other consulates in many northern Europe centres, even in England and Netherlands, shows Trani's trading and political importance in the Middle Ages. Emperor Frederick II built a massive castle in Trani. Under his rule, in the early 13th century, the city reached its highest point of wealth and prosperity.
It appears that the large boulders in Ferguson Canyon tend to hold back all the most brilliant-colored sediment deposits whenever there is high water. The water there almost looks golden.

These males appear plentiful only in the early breeding season. For unknown reasons mainly the females appear at our created bird oasis later in the season. At this time of year, however, both sexes compete with our many Woodpecker species up here to carb up from the suet feeders. Most of the smaller birds simply yield to the aggressive Woodpeckers. This one has dropped down to the pool for a drink or bath and conveniently perched on the rim of the fountain.

This beautiful adult male appeared on the 27th of April and was present for a 2nd day. It is the 2nd record for Lancashire after a fly through at Brockholes Nature Reserve near Preston in May 2016. Very few people saw that but now people can finally add this to the Lancashire lists.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pallid_harrier
The pale or pallid harrier (Circus macrourus) is a migratory bird of prey of the harrier family. The scientific name is derived from the Ancient Greek. Circus is from kirkos, referring to a bird of prey named for its circling flight (kirkos, "circle"), probably the hen harrier and macrourus is "long-tailed", from makros, "long" and -ouros "-tailed".[2]
It breeds in southern parts of eastern Europe and central Asia (such as Iran) and winters mainly in India and southeast Asia. It is a very rare vagrant to Great Britain and western Europe, although remarkably a juvenile wintered in Norfolk in the winter of 2002/2003.
This medium-sized raptor breeds on open plains, bogs and heathland. In winter it is a bird of open country.
Description
This is a typical harrier, with long wings held in a shallow V in its low flight. It also resembles other harriers in having distinct male and female plumages. Adults measure 40–48 cm (16–19 in) long with a wingspan of 95–120 cm (37–47 in). Males weigh 315 g (11.1 oz) while the slightly larger females weigh 445 g (15.7 oz). The male is whitish grey above and white below, with narrow black wingtips. It differs from the hen harrier in its smaller size, narrower wings, paler colour, and different wing tip pattern. The female is brown above with white upper tail coverts, hence females and the similar juveniles are often called "ringtails". Her underparts are buff streaked with brown. It is best distinguished from the female hen harrier on structure. It is very similar to the female Montagu's harrier, but has darker and more uniform secondaries from below.[citation needed]
Diet
Pallid harriers hunt small mammals, lizards and birds, surprising them as they drift low over fields and moors.
The nest of this species is on the ground. Four to six whitish eggs are laid.
This appears to be The zebra longwing, Heliconius charithonia (Linnaeus), and was designated the state butterfly of Florida in 1996. A denizen of more forested settings, it frequents subtropical hammocks, forest margins, shrubby thickets, and adjacent open areas. It is a regular sight in many butterfly gardens and suburban yards and parks.
This 127 has appeared on my photostream before, with me spotting it back in 2012, however, I thought it was worth another photo or two, as they are hardly an everyday sight! This example was imported to the UK back in 1999, presumably from Italy. Since arriving in the UK it has had a fair few lengthy MOT fails, although the owner now appears to be taking advantage of the MOT exemption.

"By being seldom seen, I could not stir
But like a comet I was wondered at". ― William Shakespeare; 'King Henry IV Part 1: Third Series'.
“It was a comet. The boy saw the comet and he felt as though his life had meaning. And when it went away, he waited his entire life for it to come back to him. It was more than just a comet because of what it brought to his life: direction, beauty, meaning. There are many who couldn't understand, and sometimes he walked among them. But even in his darkest hours, he knew in his heart that someday it would return to him, and his world would be whole again... And his belief in God and love and art would be re-awakened in his heart. The boy saw the comet and suddenly his life had meaning.” ― Lucas Scott; 'One Tree Hill'.

Morning appears on the backwaters of Kerala. It is still and magical. It is calm and mystical. The lily pads shine and the water glimmers as it moves in little waves. We all must find time in our lives to find moments in nature like this! They rejuvenate the soul!

Many aurora appear green, but sometimes — as in this image from the International Space Station — other colors such as red can appear. The colors depend on which atoms are causing the splash of light seen in the aurora. In most cases, the light comes when a charged particle sweeps in from the solar wind and collides with an oxygen atom in Earth’s atmosphere. This produces a green photon, so most aurora appear green. However, lower-energy oxygen collisions as well as collisions with nitrogen atoms can produce red photons -- so sometimes aurora also show a red band as seen here.

Norfolk Southern appears to have won the contract to operate the MBTA in this fantasy world that you'd scoff at for being not prototypical were you to see it on someone's model railroad! But there truly is a prototype for everything if you look hard enough or wait long enough.
Obviously this is not true because NS seems to barely want to be in the freights business these days let alone passenger! But, despite it's a absurdity this photo is very much real. NS 7564 (GE ES40DC blt. Feb. 2006) is sitting on the 'Conrail westbound' track on top of a string of long term hold coaches outside the MBTA Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility better known as BET (Boston Engine Terminal). The big GE has been sitting around for three weeks after arriving on a rail train as seen in this photo: flic.kr/p/2mjgDqx
With the rail train finally empty the 5 AM work train crew is getting ready to take their pair of MBTA units and double to the 7564 and then go pick up the empty rail train. They will deliver all of this back to Pan Am in Lowell and leave the NS unit with it to hold the air and ultimately head back home finally after taking up space and doing nothing in Boston for weeks.

Perhaps it does not appear to be but this shot is a wide as my camera kit lens will stretch 11mm. I just liked the way the trees in the distance glowed while the trunk was in deep shadow. Call it messing about with DOF
We appear to be coming down the home stretch on the fall migration here in Fairbanks. Most of the little birds, ducks and cranes have already left and now we seem to mostly have lesser Canada geese still moving thru.

It appears there are some very skillful ferris wheel thieves active in this town as well, just as there are in many towns, certainly more than I thought was plausible. Only recently I read, they didn't only steal the wheel, but in fact the whole damn theme park. The weel was only put up here as a sad replacement for the park, and, well, look at it?! Nonetheless, to my knowledge I remain the only ferris wheel thief thief in existance. Not a skilled one, I was going to add, but then again... in comparison to what?
Side of what appears to be a 34 chevy pickup that was once used by a tire retreading buisness in tulsa.

Click on the image, because it's best BIG on BLACK!!!
[NOTE: Because these newer photographs are "matted" so that they have breathing room, and so that they can be seen on a white ground, in the thumbnails they appear very small. They are not. They are in fact VERY high resolution. For whatever appreciation they might deserve, they should be seen large. You only need click the image, and even click again, to enlarge them, either on a computer or a tablet.]
