This image represents one in a series of biodiversity photorecords gathered as part of the insect ecology, biodiversity and conservation project The Little Things that Run the City.
This project was co-funded by The City of Melbourne and RMIT University, and is part of the core research being conducted by the Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub of the National Environmental Science Program. Findings from this project have contributed to the City of Melbourne's Nature in the City urban ecology and biodiversity strategy.

I volontari di Greenpeace hanno organizzato oggi attività di sensibilizzazione in 21 città italiane per chiedere il bando dei pesticidi dannosi per api e altri impollinatori, l’estensione del bando europeo ai neonicotinoidi e investimenti in pratiche agricole sostenibili. Indossando dei costumi, i volontari dell’organizzazione ambientalista hanno inoltre rappresentato le api costrette a lasciare il loro habitat naturale per colpa dei pesticidi che mettono a rischio la loro sopravvivenza.

A lovely honey bee, Apis mellifera, drinks nectar and collects white pollen from a spring flower. Her long proboscis is injected into the plant to drink in the nectar that the colony will convert to honey after fanning the nectar cells to remove the water content. A colony of honey bees is made up of 90-95% worker bees which are female. She will probably only live about 6 to 8 weeks due to working so hard for the honey flow. In the winter time, they can live longer due to less work.
One third of fruits and vegetables are pollinated by the honey bee. And if you like almonds, well the honey bee is the only pollinator for that nut~so next time you see a honey bee don't swat or kill it, give it a virtual high five or fist pump for all the work she is doing!

"Alveari naturali
Le api da miele usano grotte, cavità rocciose e alberi cavi come siti di nidificazione naturale. I membri di altri sottogeneri hanno esposto pettini aeree. Il nido è composto di più alveoli, parallele fra loro, con un relativamente uniforme e, posizioni ingresso tendono a rivolto verso il basso, dalla colonia madre sono preferiti. Le api di solito occupano i nidi per diversi anni.
Le api spesso lisciano la corteccia che circonda l'ingresso dell'alveare, e le pareti della cavità sono rivestiti con un sottile strato di resina vegetale indurito (sagomate queen cellule sono normalmente costruite sul bordo inferiore del pettine."
Queste hanno preferito un modo molto originale che ha pochi riscontri nel mondo, credo che lo usino solo le api asiatiche.
