A bee harnessed in our Proboscis Extension Reflex learning apparatus. We are currently testing the effects of a new pesticide, Sivanto (flupyradifurone) on learning ability in Honey Bees.
Apis mellifera on Rosmarinus officinalis: taken at f/11 with Yashinon 50/1.4 plus 25mm extension. Color and contrast correction.

A bee numbed by the cold found in shade in a wet meadow in February. I put her in the sun on a dandelion flower where she greedily fed, before flying to the hive.
Une abeille engourdie par le froid trouvée à l'ombre dans une prairie humide en février. Je l'ai posée au soleil sur une fleur de pissenlit où elle s'est goulûment alimentée, avant de s'envoler vers sa ruche.
This flower is a variety of Hydrangea macrophylla (variety Gakuajisai, lacecap flowers) and belongs to the family of the Hydrangeaceae. Gartenhortensie
A newly emerged worker honeybee, Apis mellifera scutellata, feeding on honey.
This bee was on of the bees used in two Honours projects, the first was to determine the effect of neonicitenoids on honey bees, and the second was to determine how more carbohydrates in the diet affects bee weight and development.

Il glomere è un ammassamento di api operaie che si stringono fra loro nei mesi invernali al fine di mantenere costante la temperatura all'interno di esso. Viene formato tra i favi mantenendo al centro parte delle scorte predisposte per superare la stagione fredda. Le api all'esterno del glomere possono sopravvivere a temperature molto rigide poiché ricevono periodicamente il cambio dalle api all'interno dello stesso.
Le sue larve per crescere parassitizzano le larve di api solitarie, prima in qualità di commensali (rubandogli il polline) e poi come predatrici. Perchè ciò avvenga, la larva deve raggiungere il nido: ciò può avvenire o perchè la deposizione avviene nelle immediate vicinanze o perchè la larva si “aggrappa” ad un insetto che visiti il fiore su cui era nata (Fonte: zoropsis.wordpress.com/2012/07/25/artropode-del-giorno-bo...;)
