Fire-tufted Barbet, Psilopogon pyrolophus, Takur Api
This species is one of common hill station Barbet in Malaysia highland areas, above 800m. Its usually solitary and its green plumage blends well with the foliage, thus making its difficult to spot when feeding on trees. But the call is unique, a cicada-like, high pitched whirr, repeated with increasing speed, make even experienced bird watchers confused it with a large cicada. Its highly specialized bill enables it to tackle hard fruits such as figs, which are swallowed whole.
Reveling in Pollen, this Honeybee, Apis mellifera, on Taraxacum officinale, Dandelion, in Bright Sunshine. There aren't many Spring Flowers yet to its taste. Delicious as Dandelion's nectar and pollen may be to our Bee, the pollen is not particularly nutritious. It lacks a number of amino acids necessary for the Apian Life. Taraxacum's has to be mixed with pollens from other plants to be useful to the nutrittional needs of our Bees.
Be this as it may, this particular Lady seemed happy enough on her Gold.. She's actually the worse for wear. Just look at the frayed edge of her wing... but she's still making herself useful to her People!

I spent some time watching bees in my raspberry patch, and came across this guy stuck in a spider web. I ran my finger under his legs to free him without a second thought. He sat there for a minute, and flew off.
I later told my mother, showing her this photo, and her first thought was that I could have been stung... I guess that didn't occur to either of us.

A bee numbed by the cold found in shade in a wet meadow in February. I put her in the sun on a dandelion flower where she greedily fed, before flying to the hive.
Une abeille engourdie par le froid trouvée à l'ombre dans une prairie humide en février. Je l'ai posée au soleil sur une fleur de pissenlit où elle s'est goulûment alimentée, avant de s'envoler vers sa ruche.

This bee was on of the bees used in two Honours projects, the first was to determine the effect of neonicitenoids on honey bees, and the second was to determine how more carbohydrates in the diet affects bee weight and development.

Il glomere è un ammassamento di api operaie che si stringono fra loro nei mesi invernali al fine di mantenere costante la temperatura all'interno di esso. Viene formato tra i favi mantenendo al centro parte delle scorte predisposte per superare la stagione fredda. Le api all'esterno del glomere possono sopravvivere a temperature molto rigide poiché ricevono periodicamente il cambio dalle api all'interno dello stesso.
