It's easy to see which building the fire started in. It's a total loss, and will be demolished right after the fire's cause is established. However, since it is historic, they will salvage the cast iron facade from the first floor, and do a laser scan of the upper floors to make an exact record of what it looked like. The left half of the building may be saved. It's in significantly better condition, and is technically a different building.

Yangon, also known as Rangoon, is a former capital of Myanmar (Burma) and the capital of Yangon Region. Yangon is the country's largest city with a population of over five million, and is the most important commercial centre.

Although Yangon's infrastructure is undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia, it has the largest number of colonial buildings in the region today. While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.

My teacher, Bob Faust, Architect. (See previous post.)

I was in Auburn last weekend for a reunion with Bob after quite a few years. We met for three days at his apartment, which is in this ensemble which he began to build in the late sixties when I was his student at Auburn.

(NOTE: There is very little post-processing of color here. Merely the colors of the night, kissing Bob Faust's poetry.)

Over the Canadian Thanksgiving/ Columbus Day (in the U.S.) long weekend, I met up with Eridony (Brandon) in Buffalo, New York. It was the third time that Brandon and I met up.

Buffalo is a city in western New York state on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, it's located about 17 miles (27 kms) south of Niagara Falls. During the 19th century and up to the 1950s, Buffalo was a boom town and a major industrial and transportation hub due to its location along the Erie Canal, railroads and Lake Erie. Between the 1860s and 1910s, Buffalo actually ranked as the top 10 largest cities in the U.S. (Thanks for that info, Brandon!) During that period, Buffalo built many impressive public and private buildings, many of which have survived till today.

Buffalo had suffered decades of economic and population decline, but in the past ten years, appears to be recovering very slowly.

Note the seats built into the landings of each stairway. These four landmark buildings were intended as model tenements for poor families suffering from tuberculosis. More photos, history at newyorkitecture.com/cherokee-apartments/

Hong Kong is one of the most densely packed cities... and compared to Tokyo, the buildings are unbelievably high and closely-packed. I was surprised, though, by how old and grungy some of the apartment complexes were. They don't really seem to believe in building upkeep very much....
