Peru's Rte 15 reaches an eye-watering 4910m elevation on the approach to the town of Chivay, nestled inside the Colca canyon. The hulking 6000-m Hualca Hualca volcano looms on the horizon behind a field of bizarre rock formations.

Licancabur is a highly symmetrical stratovolcano on the southernmost part of the border between Chile and Bolivia. It is located just southwest of Laguna Verde in Bolivia and northwest of Juriques volcano. The volcano dominates the landscape of the Salar de Atacama area. The summit crater is about 400 m wide and contains a 70 by 90 m crater lake, Lago Licancabur, which is ice-covered most of the year. This is one of the highest lakes in the world, and despite air temperatures which can drop to -30 °C, it contains planktonic fauna.
Licancabur's most recent volcanic activity produced extensive lava flows which extend 6 km down the northwest and southwest flanks, with older lava flows reaching 15 km and pyroclastic flow deposits as far as 12 km from the peak. Extensive Inca ruins are located at the summit, providing proof of pre-Columbian ascents as well as evidence for a lack of major eruptions over the past 500–1,000 years.

A cordilheira dos Andes se estende desde a Venezuela até a Patagônia, atravessando todo o continente sul-americano, caracterizando a paisagem do Chile, Argentina, Peru, Bolívia, Equador e Colômbia, também conhecidos como países Andinos. A cordilheira surgiu em resultado de um choque ocorrido entre duas placas tectônicas: há milhões de anos, a placa de Nazca moveu-se em direção à placa sul-americana, dando origem às elevadas montanhas que hoje formam a cordilheira dos Andes.

Near Ayo, lava flows filled the valley long ago, leaving behind a red carapace visible in the middle and foreground. The river has since excavated a new canyon to the left, flooding the valley floor to form Lake Mamacochas – which in turn supports the dense green vegetation visible at the valley floor. Behind rises Mt. Sukna, a barren 5120m peak that has been cleaved by the river.
Cordilheira dos Andes é uma vasta cadeia montanhosa formada por um sistema contínuo de montanhas ao longo da costa ocidental da América do Sul, sendo a formação geológica desta datada do período Terciário. A cordilheira possui aproximadamente oito mil quilômetros de extensão. É a maior cadeia de montanhas do mundo (em comprimento), e em seus trechos mais largos chega a 160 km do extremo leste ao oeste. Sua altitude média gira em torno de 4000 m e seu ponto culminante é o monte Aconcágua, com 6 962 m de altitude.

This is another re do of pictures that have meaning to me. Hopefully it is an improvement. This was taken on the third morning on our trek to Machu Picchu taken from our campsite at 14,500 ft.. Mt. Palcay is in the distance and tops out at about 19,000 feet. As anybody who knows me, has heard about the debacle in the final days before leaving for Peru, by the touring company. They also know that our hike went through the high desert of the Andes instead of the cloudy, misty hike of jungle like terrain. If ever get a chance to revisit Machu Picchu, I would re do this particular hike in a heart beat. We hiked through the high Andes grazing plains like this for 4 days. In the entire time, besides our group of four and the guide etc., we never saw another soul. And we had views like this to wake up to. So after it is all said and done, we are glad they screwed up.
